Pinjore resident shot dead in Mexico
Kalka, November 12 According to Sanjiv Kumar, younger brother of the deceased, Ram was murdered on September 22, this year, in the Guatemala City of Mexico. The incident took place when when some miscreants tried to snatch his cash bag on his way to home. He opposed and the miscreants shot two bullets in his head. The looters absconded after the incident. He was rushed to a hospital in Guatemala from where he was later admitted to Santro Medico Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His body was brought to Pinjore today. The body was cremated at Ram Bagh in Pinjore. Sanjiv Kumar added that his brother had gone to Mexico for some business work. The Ministry of Public had registered a case in this context, but no clue has been found till date about the miscreants. The deceased is survived by two daughters and a son. — OC |
Scuffle between accused, rape victim at court complex
Chandigarh, November 12 The accused, Vikas Sethi, allegedly abused her by making “objectionable” gestures. No case was registered against Sethi, though, the victim reportedly called the police. The complaints and statements of both sides were taken. Vikas Sethi appeared before the court here in a case of sexual harassment. The incident took place before the hearing began in the rape case. So far, no case has been has been registered by the police. |

Vehicle thefts reported
Chandigarh, November 12 In another case, Kiran Chabri, a resident of Housing Board Colony, Maloya, reported that someone had stolen her Esteem car from Rehri Market, Sector 19. A case has been registered Parvinder Singh, a resident of Sector 41, reported that his motorcycle was stolen from the parking lot of SD College, Sector 32. The police have registered a case . 1 held for demanding ransom
Mohali, November 12 The accused has been identified as Ram Bilas (36), a resident of Sector 43, Chandigarh. The accused along with others had thrown a threatening letter in the house of Rakesh Rikhi, an owner of Rudraksh Immigration Company, and demanded Rs 25 lakh. “In the letter, the victim and his family members were threatened with their lives,” said SI Navin Pal Singh Lehal, station house officer of Phase XI police station. SI Lehal added that around six persons, posing as mediapersons, had also gone to Rikhi’s office and threatened him to give them hefty amount or gold jewellery. “At that time, Rikhi remained mum about the incident. But when he received the threatening letter, he approached us,” the SI said. The accused a was former employee of Rikhi, who later opened his own company under the name of Indian Immigration at Sector 34, Chandigarh, after leaving the job around nine years ago. “As he suffered losses in his business, he conspired with other assailants against his former employer,” the police said. A case under Sections 387, 452, 506, 149 of the IPC has been registered at Phase XI police station. |

Man stabbed, robbed of phone
Chandigarh, November 12 The police said the victim, identified as Dharam Singh Pandey, was returning home from Hallo Majra when the miscreants approached him and told him to hand over his belongings. Even after the victim handed over his mobile phone, the miscreants started searching his pockets, said the police. When the victim resisted, two youths allegedly caught hold of him and the third stabbed him near his eye and shoulder, before fleeing. The victim, who works with a contractor at the IT Park, was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. His condition is said to be stable. A case has been registered in the matter. |

Student’s cell, debit cards snatched
Chandigarh, November 12 Victim Amam Gulati, a resident of Sector 42, complained that on November 11 he was walking down with his friend to ISBT when a MUV bearing registration number of Punjab stopped near him. Aman complained that one of the persons got down from the car and forcefully took his I-phone and purse. The accused then fled from the spot. The police said that there were around five persons sitting in the car at the time of incident. The complainant called the police from his friend’s mobile phone. The registration number of the vehicle has been provided to the police. The police have registered a case at the Sector 36 police station. |

Chandigarh, November 12 Sharda used his experience to beat Sandal in the match that lasted over two hours and 12 minutes. Sabrang started with aggressive ground strokes and won the first set 6-3. Both the players were tied at 2-2 when Rishabh used variation to break Sabrang’s rhythm. Rishabh won the next four games to take the second set 6-2. In the final set, Rishabh got an early break and a lead of 2-0 but once again Sabrang played some fine shots to level the set at 3-3. Rishabh kept his cool and clinched the set 6-4. Another CLTA trainee third seed Calvin Golmei had to contest hard against Chandigarh Rural Academy for Tennis (CHART) trainee Shashikant Rajput to win the first set 6-1 but in the second set, Shashikant took a 4-1 lead. After this, most of the games went in deuce. Experienced Calvin Golmei took the set at 7-5 after saving two set points in the ninth game. Calvin will now face second seed Aditya Vashisht, who defeated Ramanjot Dhindsa in a one-sided match by conceding only one game. In other match, seventh seed Gurjot Singh upset top seed Kabir Manrai to fix a clash with Rishabh Sharda in the semifinals. Kabir Manrai had a commanding lead in the first set. He was leading 5-1. From there, Gurjot used good variation to break Kabir’s rhythm and won the next six games to win the set. In the second set, Gurjot again raced to a 4-0 lead. However, Kabir managed to win two games in the second set. In the girls’ quarterfinal, top seed Seerat Kaur Pannu conceded only two games to move into semifinals. She beat Rahat Mangat of CLTA by 6-2, 6-0. Seerat will clash with Alisha Menon, who defeated qualifier Luvya Lamba of CLTA with an identical score of 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile, fourth seed Jannat Khurana defeated qualifier Mehak Khurmi 6-1, 6-0. CGA Juniors Golf Tourney begins
Panchkula, November 12 The tournament saw the participation of 97 players. Last year’s leaders maintained their performance this year as well. In Category A, Jaiveer Sandhu was leading while in Category B Aadil Bedi was leading with a score of seven over 79. In Category C Inderpreet Singh was leading with a score of eight over 80. Meanwhile, in category D and E Aditya Sood and Angad were the leaders in their respective categories. AG Punjab footballers enter semifinals
Chandigarh, November 12 Right from the outset, hosts dominated the game and made furious attack on Uttarakhand’s goal post. Their efforts bore the fruit when they earned a penalty kick in the sixth minute of the game. Forward Amandeep made no mistake to convert the penalty kick into a goal and ticked the scoreboard. In the 10th minute, Amandeep again dodged the defence line of Uttrakhand and netted the ball. AG Punjab scored their third goal in the 13th minute, when mid-fielder Gagandeep intercepted the ball from left end and kicked it into the goal post. In the next minute, Punjab again made a move from the right side and Gagandeep again utilised the opportunity by scoring the fourth goal for his team. Amandeep of Punjab once again struck in the 20th minute and gave his team an invincible lead of 5-0. In the second half, both the teams tried to score a goal but all in vain and AG Punjab won the match. Meanwhile, in the second match of the day, AG Haryana outshined AG Uttar Pradesh by 4-0 and confirmed their berth in the semifinal. AG Haryana opened their accounts in the 16th minute when Akhib Javed kicked the ball into the goal post by dodging the goal keeper. Haryana led the scoreboard by 1-0 Aman Batra further improved the tally of his team by scoring two goals consecutively in the 54th and 68th miunte, respectively, helping Haryana clinch the match. Punjab cricketers log six-wicket win

Chandigarh, November 12 After winning the toss and opting to field, Punjab restricted SSCB to 200 all out in 42.1 overs. Sandeep Sharma who bowled a tidy length snarled five wickets for 31 runs. He polished all the top order reducing them to 26 for four in 6.2 overs. Later, skipper Harbhajan Singh joined him to take three wickets for 38 runs. SSCB innings was redeemed by Rajat Paliwal scoring 52 off 74 balls with five boundaries and skipper Yash Pal Singh, who scored 71 off 81 balls inclusive of 11 boundaries. In reply, Punjab opened with Manan Vohra and Amitoze Singh. The duo put on 76 runs for the opening stand before Manan Vohra was caught by Skuja off Narinder Kumar for 47 off 28 balls with five boundaries. Amitoze then joined by Mandeep Singh put on 82-run partnership for the second wicket before Amitoze Singh was caught by S Nazar off Narinder Kumar for 73 off 102 balls with seven boundaries and one six. Mandeep Singh was next to go, being caught by Nakul Varma off S Nazar for 33 off 39 balls with three boundaries. Taruwar Kohli remained unbeaten on 30 off 16 balls with four boundaries and one six.
