Fire destroys goods worth crores
Ludhiana, November 7
A fire broke out in a timber store near Octroi Post on Ferozepur Road this morning. Wood, plywood and ply board worth crores were destroyed. It took over 12 fire tenders and some 40 fire brigade personnel eight hours to put out the fire.

False case racket
Two more cops dragged into legal mess
Ludhiana, November 7
The controversy shrouding ND Sharma and his false molestation case racket refuses to die down. In the latest development, names of two top police officers have figured in an application submitted in the court of Judicial Magistrate Supreet Kaur (in the case of ND Sharma versus SHO Davinder Singh), the next hearing of which is on November 29.

Eyewitness mum, kin cry foul
Ludhiana, November 7
Harpreet Kaur, alias Simran, the lone eyewitness in the Jamalpur fake encounter, met the victims’ parents today. Two Dalit brothers, Harinder (25) and Jatinder Singh (23), were killed by a SAD leader on September 27.

Part of illegal building razed in Model Town

Building branch officials today demolished a portion of an illegal commercial building in the Model Town market. SS Bindra, Assistant Town Planner, Zone D, said a portion of the building was pulled down when they learnt that the owner had not got the building plan approved.

Avoid foods that can turn your body into junkyard
Ludhiana, November 7
Junk food has addictive potential and it should come with a statutory warning. This was stated by experts on the second day of the National Conference of Nutrition Society of India. Prof Shashank R Joshi, president, Association of Physicians of India, said junk food should be banned and even the World Health Organisation had recommended the same. “Fast food has addictive power and one becomes addicted to it like alcohol and smoking. Even advertisements and products should come with a statutory warning,” he said.

Police fine 39 tractor-trailers 
Ludhiana, November 7
The police challaned 39 tractor-trailers and impounded nine vehicles for violating traffic rules. Yesterday, ACP (Traffic) Richa Agnihotri carried out a midnight operation. Nakas were laid at Ferozepur Road and at Sherpur Chowk. The drive continued till the wee hours, with the ACP supervising the proceedings.

Congress leaders scoff at MC

Provide loan to farmers, needy on priority, banks told
Ludhiana, November 7
Supreet Singh Gulati, vice-chairman of the District-Level Review Committee-cum-Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), Ludhiana, has said that if any bank official demands bribe from any applicant in lieu of clearing a bank loan, he would ask the Vigilance Department to register a case against the erring bank official.

Aadhaar cards: 16 permanent enrolment centres set up
Ludhiana, November 7
To make sure that all residents of Ludhiana district get their Aadhaar cards made so that they are enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, the District Administration has set up 16 permanent enrolment centres in different parts of the district. These centres will have 19 machines, through which the residents can get their Aadhaar cards made.

Farmers will get payment of paddy crop soon: Minister
Ludhiana, November 7
Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Finance Minister, Punjab, addresses the gathering at the PAU. Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Finance Minister, Punjab, said farmers whose paddy crop was procured by the government would get their payment soon. “We have written to the Centre to release Rs 15,000 crore for the payment to farmers. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal also approached the Centre to get the funds released. We hope that the issue will be sorted out within two or three days,” said Finance Minister.

Parents protest outside Bal Bharti Public School in Ludhiana on Friday High drama was witnessed outside Bal Bharti School at Dugri today as parents gathered there and protested against the school for not keeping its promises. Parents alleged that the school had not formed the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) in a democratic way as it was committed by the authorities concerned till September.

Man opens fire at in-laws
Samrala, November 7
A man allegedly opened fire at his in-laws and injured three of them. A woman was also among the injured. The incident took place at Dhande village near here when relatives of Jatinder Pal Singh had come to the village to sort out a marital dispute between Jatinder and his wife, Amandeep Kaur. Jaswinder Singh, a relative of Amandeep, said they had come to sort out a marital dispute.
