DCC office-bearers quit:
Forty office-bearers of the Ludhiana district Congress committee (DCC) on Wednesday send their resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi, protesting against the "arbitrary and uncalled for" expulsion of former DCC chief Pawan Dewan and four block presidents. They said it was surprising that PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa had to resort to such "desperate measures to assert his authority".

Youth booked for rape bid:
Billa (22) of Ghariala village, 35 km from here, has been booked under Section 376 and 511 of the IPC for allegedly attempting to rape a five-year-old girl.

Former MP bereaved: Jagir Kaur (84), wife of former Akali Dal MP Major Singh Uboke died on Wednesday at a private hospital after a prolonged illness. No one from the ruling SAD was present at the cremation.

: A state-level consultation on the Juvenile Justice Bill, 2014, was organised by CRY- Child Rights and You in Chandigarh. The objective of this consultation was to understand child protection mechanisms in the state and also to discuss the proposed Bill and to seek inputs from relevant stakeholders and civil society groups. Many stakeholders took part in it.

Bansi Lal varsity forms academic planning board:
Chaudhary Bansi Lal University here has constituted the Academic Planning Board to advise the varsity on on the standard of education and research. Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, Chancellor of the university, has nominated his members to the planning board for two years. The board will be headed by Prof Surender Kumar Gakhar, Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Cycle rally organised to spread awareness:
To create an awareness regarding the cleanliness drive, 'Swachh Haryana, Swachh Bharat', started by the state government, the district police and various social organisations of the city, took out a cycle rally in the city on Wednesday. It was flagged off by Rajbir Deswal, IGP, Karnal range. IGP Deswal, SP Abhishek Garg along with other police officials, office bearer of various NGOs and residents of the city, took part in the rally to spread the message among the residents to make Karnal a clean and hygienic district.

Gangster elected chief of truck union:
Satbir Jhabbal, a convicted gangster, has been elected president of a Kaithal truck union. Representatives of various traders associations have decided to boycott the union, known as 'Bhaichara Transport Association'. A deputation of local traders led by Suresh Mittal, president, new and old grain markets, and Ram Niwas Mittal, Municipal Council chairman, met Deputy Commissioner NK Solanki and SP Kuldeep Singh Yadav here on Wednesday and sought security.

Hang cow slaughterers, say Lok Swaraj Abhiyan members:
Lok Swaraj Abhiyan, a social organisation, has sought capital punishment for cow smugglers and slaughterers in the state. The organisation has sent an appeal to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar urging him to enact the Cow Protection Act with the provision of capital punishment. National convener Vishnu Bhagwan Agarwal said, "There is a need for harsher punishment for those indulging in cow slaughter."

Man ends life :
A man committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance on Wednesday. Dharambir’s wife Meena alleged Sonu, Rubi and Sandeep had harassed him, leading to his suicide. They have been booked for abetment to suicide.

Devotees throng Kapal Mochan:
About five lakh pilgrims have thronged Kapal Mochan, Bilaspur, in this district to take a holy dip in sarovars on the eve of Kartik Purnima at midnight today.

Students killed in accident:
Two students of Baba Balak Nath Degree College, Chakmoh, died in an accident when their bike collided with a truck near Bijhari village in the district. The deceased have been identified as Suraj of Bahal village and Rajit of Karneda Fagoti village of the district. Their bike skidded on a sharp curve and hit a truck.

Man killed in road mishap:
A 54-year-old man of Duggiari village was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a Himachal Road Transport Corporation bus at Matour on Wednesday. The police said the man was on his motorcycle when he was hit by the bus. He was rushed to the DRPGMCH, Tanda, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Student commits suicide:
A 20-year-old BEd student committed suicide in the Ramnagar locality of the town on Wednesday. The police said the student committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her house. She along with her parents was staying in a rented accommodation in the locality . 

Nurpur
Debate on privatisation of education :
Arni University, Kathgarh, organised its annual debate competition here on Wednesday. The topic of the debate was “Privatisation of education”. Sourab Sharma was adjudged first and Yukta Gupta was declared the first runners-up, whereas Shweta and Krishna shared the third position in the competition.

Curb rights violations, PDP patron urges Modi:
PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that pledges to curb human rights violations were strictly adhered to. Addressing a public meeting, Mufti said the killing of innocent persons could not be justified and could reverse efforts towards peace and normalcy. He said the Centre should engage all sections of society in a productive dialogue process.

NC dumps former minister Akhoon in Kargil :
The NC has fielded surgeon Kachoo Hussain in Kargil segment. It dumped Qamar Ali Akhoon, political adviser to the Chief Minister, and Feroz Khan, junior minister and sitting Zanskar legislator. Islamia School, Kargil, an NC supporter, had named Feroz as an Independent candidate from Kargil, but decided against it.

MLC Sheikh Rasool quits NC : MLC Sheikh Ghulam Rasool Wednesday resigned from the National Conference . He charged CM Omar Abdullah with alienating the people. Ghulam Rasool was sworn-in as MLC in 2010. “I have submitted my resignation to Omar. I have resigned from the membership as well as the working committee. Omar’s six years have disillusioned me,” he said. He said he would soon decide his future.
