Inter-school girls football tournament
Special treatment to school raises eyebrows
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 5
The sports branch of the UT Education Department, falling flat on rules, has asked the DAV School to clarify the month of admission of their players participating in the inter-school girls football (U-17) championship by Friday.

As per the rules, the players admitted till the month of May are eligible to play in the inter-school tournaments. On contrary, all the 18 members of DAV School, Sector 8, were admitted in the month of August.

Students with late admissions can be allowed to play, only if given special approval by the DPI, schools, UT Administration, prior to the tournament.

However, the DAV coaching staff failed to produce the special permission as they claimed to forget the piece of permission back in school.

On other hand, rather taking a strict action, the organisers have asked the DAV School to produce the document till Friday, raising eyebrows on this ‘special treatment’ for a particular team.

The team also attracted objections, as all the players of the DAV School are from a Hisar-based (Haryana) academy. The same batch did not participated in the Suboroto Cup Football Championship for girls held in the month of July, organised by same department, and no player from the team appeared for the trials meant to select Chandigarh girl’s team for the national games.

“They claimed to have special permission of DPI schools for playing in the championship however they failed to produce the document on Wednesday. We have given a day’s time to produce the documents,” said Balwinder Singh, in-charge of the tournament. When asked about the special relaxation of one day, he maintained, “We are following the instructions of the department,” said he. The inter-school tournament for girls (U-17) is being played at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37.

On the other hand, local coaches are also opposing the decision allegedly taken by the higher authorities. “Had it been some government school, decision would have been different. If players of government schools, admitting to school on late dates, struggle hard to play without permission then why this particular school has been given one-day relaxation to submit the document. If they have the permission, they could have brought it today as Sector 37 is not far from Sector 8,” said a coach.

The coach, from Hissar, accompanying DAV School team said, “These officials put so many conditions on children. My job was to bring players while completing the paper work is the responsibility of local school teachers,” said the coach (name withheld).
