UT demotes official for dereliction of duty
Chandigarh, November 2
Close on the heels of the UT Estate Office demoting five of its officials for their failure to report the status of a resumed property for over 10 years, a superintendent of the Marketing Board has been demoted as junior assistant for dereliction of duty, resulting in embarrassment to senior officials of the Chandigarh Administration in a case pertaining to the vegetable and fruit market being heard by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Snores: Couples wake up to medical assistance

Unaware of the fact that frequent snoring is a prominent symptom of sleep disorder, a number of individuals are still reaching sleep medicine experts these days, courtesy the annoyance caused due to the spouse’s loud snores in the middle of the night which “just do not seem to go away” in most cases. According to experts handling problems of sleep disorders in the city, at least five cases are reported at their clinics every month in which affected individuals bring their spouses for treatment to get rid of the disturbance caused to them due to their partner's frequency of snoring.

Carrying forward the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’, renowned designer and social activist Sanjana Jon supported by film actor Zarine Khan and wrestler Sangram Singh today initiated the campaign in Sector 15 falling under the municipal ward of BJP Councillor Saurabh Joshi.

More CCTV cameras at police stations soon

The Chandigarh Police is soon going to install additional CCTV cameras at the city police stations. At present, around five cameras are installed at the police stations which will be increased to nine.

A kidnapping that wasn’t
Panchkula, November 2
High drama was witnessed after a family created ruckus that their businessman son had been allegedly ‘kidnapped’ by unidentified miscreants when his car was found abandoned in the market of Sector 10 late last evening. The victim, identified as Varun Bajaj (32), had gone out on October 30 for some work when his car was found abandoned.

Bags full of garbage lie unattended at Sector 17 in Panchkula. The cleanliness drive initiated by top brass in Panchkula seems to be a mere eyewash. The area that was cleaned was back to its original state today, say residents. The road leading to Mauli Jagran in Sector 17 here was in a terrible condition as garbage was lying unattended at the wall adjacent to the colony.

Artistes take part in cultural fest

Emerging artistes from various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana took part in the Intra-Regional Cultural Festival organised by the Power Grid Corporation of India, Northern Region-II. The festival and traditional handicrafts exhibition was held at the Inderdhanush Auditorium in Panchkula last evening.

The convenor, Dr Neeraj Nagpal, said: “Consumer forums lack medical know-how while dealing with technical issues and most of the judgments take an emotional approach and facts are not taken into account in an empirical way.”

Govt staff need to show more enthusiasm
How does the government machinery become enthusiastically active to give a particular vicinity neat, clean and tidy look when some VVIP has to visit that area? This is a clear indication that government has sufficient manpower and machinery to keep the city neat and clean but the only thing that lacks is the enthusiasm that comes to the fore when a VVIP has to come.

Paucity of funds hits PU hostel projects

Shortage of funds is proving to be a stumbling block in the proposed hostel projects at Panjab University (PU). Records of the university revealed that there is a proposal for two hostel projects but the university authorities are unable to move forward on the proposal as it does not have enough funds.

Artistes enact a scene from the play, “Kultar’s Mime”, at Punjab Kala Bhawan in Chandigarh on Sunday. A play on Sarabpreet’s poetry, ‘Kultar’s Mime’, was staged at Punjab Kala Bhawan here today. The hour-and-a-half play, directed and written by father-daughter Sarabpreet Singh and J Mehar Kaur recreated the agony and pain of children who suffered during the anti-Sikh riots in 1984.

Golden jubilee celebrations
The Biophysics Department, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, will celebrate its golden jubilee by holding an international symposium on recent advances in biophysics and a meeting of the alumni from November 3. PU Department of Biophysics chairperson Prof DK Dhawan said the department was established in 1964 and grew to attain recognition under the leadership of Prof SR Bawa, the founder head.

Sector 17 firing incident
5th accused released on bail

A day after the five youths, who were accused of openly fire at a discotheque in Sector 17 five months ago, were acquitted in the case, the fifth accused was released (on bail) by the Duty Magistrate today.

Man held on charge of raping 72-yr-old
Chandigarh, November 2
A Sector 56 resident has been arrested for raping a 72-year-old deaf and dumb woman. The police said the victim’s son who ran a shop in Sector 56 said that on October 31 the accused identified as Om Parkash Misra came to his shop at 9 pm.

Theft at Sector 39 temple, case registered 
Chandigarh, November 2
The Chandigarh Police have registered a case of theft reported at Shiv Mandir in Sector 39 on October 13. A silver statue, silver jewellery and utensils were stolen from the temple.

Man commits suicide 
Mohali, November 2
A resident of Mataur village allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself last night here. The victim has been identified as Mehar Chand.
