2 killed as pick-up, truck collide

Two persons, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a pick-up and a 12-wheeler multi-axle vehicle near Kot Billah on the National Highway-73 this afternoon.

Woman killed, 4 hurt as car hits auto

A 45-year-old woman was killed while four others were injured when an auto-rickshaw overturned on the road dividing Sectors 7 and 8 after being hit by a recklessly driven car this morning.

Child rights panel finds schools violating RTE, POCSO Act
Chandigarh, October 14
City government schools are violating the Right to Education Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2014. According to a report of the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights, 20 complaints have been received in the past eight months, of which 75 per cent pertain to government schools.

Undertrial took away vehicle at gunpoint

A probe into the incident of carjacking reported two days ago near the Kalibari light point has revealed that it was an undertrial who escaped from the District Courts who asked for the victim to stop, pointed pistol at him and took away the car.

Sensitisation programme for journalists held

The Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights organised a sensitisation programme for media personnel on the role of media in reporting of children-related cases with special reference to provisions of the POCSO Act and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.

Deprecating Panjab University for shifting two SC students, who had obtained admission to Government Nursing College under the general category, to the Scheduled Caste category, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the university.

The Samana police raided a godown situated on the Noorpura road and destroyed a large quantity of sweets lying uncovered in steel and plastic containers. Many insects and flies were found on the sweets.

JE held on charge of taking bribe
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 14
The Vigilance Bureau on Tuesday nabbed a Junior Engineer of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000. Inspector Iqbal Singh said Rajdeep Singh of Chunni Kalan had complained that Shivdev Singh, JE of Badali Ala Singh, had demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for installing a transformer. A trap was laid and the deal was struck for Rs 50,000. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered.

Neighbour rapes 13-year-old in Dhanas

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour at her residence in Dhanas Colony. The accused has been arrested. The police said Amardeep Singh, a daily-wage earner, had been arrested and sent in judicial custody.

Almost one month after a 16-year-old girl died while her mother was injured after their scooter was hit by an unidentified tempo at the Railway light point, the Chandigarh police managed to arrest the accused who had fled from the spot that day.
