Burglars hit doc, flee with valuables
Ludhiana, October 14
There is no stopping thieves and robbers in the city. In the latest incident, burglars struck at a house in Model Town, attacked a doctor and decamped with cash and gold ornaments worth lakhs of rupees. The victim, identified as Dr Rammy Garg, was rushed to the hospital where her condition was stated to be serious.

City at receiving end of power staff agitation
Cash counters of the PSPCL were partially operational in Ludhiana on Tuesday Ludhiana, October 14
As the technical employees and clerical staff of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited (PSTCL) commenced their day-long strike from midnight, most areas of the city plunged into darkness due to disruption in power supply due to inclement weather.

Man’s bigamous ties exposed after victims meet at court

Two city-based woman, who fell victim to a Chandigarh-based person, have approached the Commissioner of Police for justice. The women have alleged that the man used the sacred institution of marriage for making money.

Swachh Bharat off track at city station
Ludhiana, October 14
The Indian Railways launched the Swachh Bharat campaign with much enthusiasm and displayed attractive posters at railway stations to create awareness among the public but things are far from reality at the local station. During a visit to the local station, this correspondent found the tracks littered with filth as usual.

Raids to detect illegal stocks of firecrackers
Jagraon, October 14
To check the illegal stock of fireworks by the local shopkeepers, a team of officials from the Sales Tax Department carried out a raid in Jagraon today. The Sales Tax Department team comprising Excise and Taxation Officer (ETO) Ludhiana, Gurdeep Singh, Sales Tax Officer Jagraon Parkash Singh and others visited a shop located in the Nehru Market area of Jagraon. The raid was carried out on the instructions of Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Ludhiana, Rajwinder Kaur.

PSEB to cancel exam centres

The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), will cancel a number of examination centres, which have not been fulfilling the conditions of the PSEB in the district. The private schools — affiliated with the board — had submitted the details about infrastructure available in schools to the PSEB to get the approval for an examination centre at the schools on July 14.

School authorities defy DEO orders, fail to shift premises
Ludhiana, October 14
The issue of shifting Government Primary School, Kundanpuri, — currently functioning from a building declared unsafe — hangs in the balance due to a divided opinion. Despite orders of the District Education Officer (Elementary), the school staff has not shifted the school.

Associated schools have to submit self-appraisal forms: PSEB secy
Ludhiana, October 14
The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) will not exempt any school associated with the board from submitting self-appraisal forms. According to senior board officials, they will not extend the dates for the submission of forms. The board has fixed October 20 as the date for submission of self-appraisal forms.

Extension lecture held at GPC
The PG Department of English of Gobindgarh Public College, Alour (Khanna), organised an extension lecture on “Poetics by Aristotle and its relevance in Present Scenario,” on Tuesday. Dr Anil Raina, Dept of English and Culture Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the resource person. College principal Dr Neena Seth Pajni welcomed him. Dr Anil Raina highlighted the importance of poetics by Aristotle. More than 50 students attended this lecture.

A survey of iodine deficiency disorders under the National Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Programme was conducted at various government schools across the district today. Surveys were conducted under the supervision of Dr Anil Verma, District Epidemiologist, at Primary School in Dholewal, Government Primary School Jamalpur and Government Primary School Dhandari Khurd.

Dr Ambedkar Training Institute Old Students Association, Mohali, will hold a meeting on October 19 at Hotel Fine Dining, near Shimla Pahadi, Una Road, Hoshiarpur. The executive committee of the association in a press statement stated that they would devise a plan about the first annual meeting of the association to be held in 2015.

Malwinder Singh Jaggi, an IAS, has been unanimously elected president of the District Roller Skating Association (DRSA), Ludhiana. JS Dhaliwal, general secretary of the association, said Jaggi was elected during the annual general meeting at Sutlej Club. The meeting also resolved to authorise him to form a new team.

Breast cancer awareness
Students take part in a Diwali function at SDP Senior Secondary School in Ludhiana on Tuesday. Ludhiana: A talk show on cancer awareness was held at DAV BRS Nagar, Ludhiana. October is observed as the ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ across the world to increase awareness among people about the precautions and preventions of breast cancer. Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, is also observing ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Week’ from October 13-18. On October 14, a cancer awareness session was held at DAV Public School, BRS Nagar.

Employees stage protest

Members of the District Sangrash Committee held a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office today. Activists of the Punjab Mulazam Sangarsh Committee burnt an effigy of the Punjab Government and raised slogans. They resented the anti-employee policies of the government.

Mother and Child Hospital is coming up at a cost of Rs 16.61 crore. Ludhiana, October 14
Mother and Child Hospital will be readied by November, but the authorities are yet to recruit staff. Doctors from the gynaecology and paediatrics department of the Civil Hospital will be shifted to the hospital.

City basks in social activist’s glory

Nobel Peace Prize to social activist Kailash Satyarthi is being hailed all over. Dinesh Kumar, state coordinator, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, said there was a wave of elation. He said he had been working with Satyarthi for the past two-and-a-half years, adding that he truly deserved the recognition.

Literary contest held

An inter-house essay writing competition was organised for the junior and senior students on the freedom struggle. The students expressed their spirit of patriotism in Hindi, English and Punjabi. An inter-class Hindi poem recitation competition was also organised for Classes I-V in which every class recited two poems each. The group activity left the judges spellbound as appropriate props were also used to make the event effective.

Youth gets one-yr term 
Jagraon, October 14
The court of Judicial Magistrate Supreet Kaur has convicted a youth, Puneet Jain of Jagraon, in a cheque-bounce case. The court sentenced the youth to a one-year imprisonment. A fine of Rs 5,000 was also imposed on him. Complainant Shivinder Mohan Bansal stated that Puneet Jain took Rs 2.83 lakh from him three years ago and issued a cheque.
