Kalka to see neck-and-neck fight between BJP, INLD
Bipin Bhardwaj
Tribune News Service

Kalka, October 14
Fate of 12 candidates contesting the Vidhan Sabha elections from the Kalka constituency will be decided by 1,56,178 voters, tomorrow.

Though seven political parties — the BJP, INLD, Congress, HJC-HJCP, BSP, HJP and Samast Bhartiya Party (SBP) - and five Independents are in the fray, it is going to be a neck-and-neck fight between the INLD and BJP candidates here.

The candidates of the Congress and the HJCP are also staking their claims to the seat.

The political equations of the constituency changed with the HJC-HJCP alliance fielding Shakti Rani Sharma, wife of HJCP supremo Venod Sharma, from the seat to get the support of Brahmin voters as it is a Brahmin-dominating constituency.

She also managed to win over some close confidants of the INLD and the Congress and sneaked to their stronghold areas in the constituency.

The graph of the HJC-HJCP alliance witnessed a sharp rise with Venod Sharma, Kuldeep Bishnoi, the HJC chief, and Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi campaigning for Shakti Rani Sharma.

The BJP’s election campaign got momentum after the Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj addressed a rally in Kalka seeking votes for party candidate Latika Sharma.

It was bollywood actor and Gurdaspur MP Vinod Khanna who further gave acceleration to Latika’s campaign by addressing public rallies at Kalka and Raipur Rani.

TV actor Gajendra Chauhan also remained a crowd-puller for the BJP candidate.

INLD candidate Pradeep Chaudhary started his election campaign almost a month before his rivals jumped into the election fray.

Besides INLD leader Abhey Chautala, no other big leader of the party addressed public meetings in Chaudhary’s favour. Chaudhary, who is the sitting MLA, is pinning hopes on the INLD cadre votes in the area.

Chaudhary got a shot in the arm with Bhagat Singh, a cousin of Congress candidate Manvir Kaur Gill, and his supporters, joining the INLD under the leadership of Abhey Chautala.

Congress candidate and former president of the Panchkula municipal council, Manvir Kaur Gill, trailed the BJP, INLD and HJCP candidates in the election campaign. While Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar kick-started his election campaign, Kumari Selja, MP, Rajya Sabha; Virbhadra Singh, Chief Minister, Himachal Pradesh; Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, former Chief Minister, Punjab, and some other prominent leaders addressed rallies seeking votes for her on the last day of the campaigning.

It was a one man show for the BSP as Satvinder Singh Rana, who was the BSP’s choice for the Kalka seat, campaigned in the constituency alone. No big leader from the BSP turned up for his support.

Candidates interact through Facebook

While other contestants campaigned door to door and sought votes from the public till late this evening, Latika Sharma of the BJP and Congress candidate Manvir Kaur Gill used Facebook, a social networking site, to interact with the public. The candidates also posted their agenda on a Facebook page and received feedback and suggestions from people.
