Punjab beat UPCA by five wickets

Chandigarh, October 2
The team of Punjab defeated Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) by 5 wickets in their league match of the 21st All-India JP Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament, here today.

Prashant Gupta (25 runs) and Abhinav Dixit (20 runs) were the main scorers for UPCA side while Punjab bowlers right arm leg spinner Sarabjit Ladda (4 for 27) and left arm spinner Rajwinder Golu (3 for 43) claimed honours. In reply, Punjab side achieved the winning target with Yuvraj Singh scoring 43 runs and Jiwanjot Singh (36 runs) scoring a lion’s share. Sarabjit Singh Ladda was named man of the match.

Match II

DDCA defeated HPCA by 7 wickets. Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) tumbled to 40 runs for 5 wickets in the span of 14.2 overs. Delhi’s Subodh Bhatti returned with flattering figures of 5 for 34 off 9.5 overs. For Himachal, Vikrant Kumar (28 off 49 balls with 4 boundaries) and Shrisht Nirmohi (34 off 54 balls with 3 boundaries) were the main scorers. The HPCA team bundled for 129 in 41.5 overs.

Chasing a modest total, DDCA went past the winning post in 33.2 overs by scoring 132 runs. Aditya Kaushik (40 off 86 balls with 4 boundaries) and Vaibhav Rawal (36 off 49 balls with 4 boundaries) were the main scorers. Vinay Gulatia, Ankit Kaushik and Vikrant Kumar shared one wicket each for HPCA. Subodh Bhatti won the man of the match award.

Match III

In the third match, State Bank of Mysore won their 2nd league encounter after defeating Baroda by 59 runs. The State Bank of Mysore opted to bat and scored 248 runs in the allotted 50 overs. KM Bharath and Pawan Desh Pandey got together and stitched a fruitful partnership of 122 runs for the 3rd wicket before Pawan was caught by wicket keeper Dixit off Pratyush for 72 off 89 balls with 6 boundaries and two sixes. Bharath scored 51 off 96 balls with 9 boundaries and one six. Anirudh Joshi also played a knock of 67 off 58 balls with 5 boundaries and 2 sixes. For Baroda, Prityush claimed 4 for 65 while Lukman Mariwala took 3 for 39. In reply, Baroda team was bowled out for 189 in 48.5 overs with Sorabh Wakaskar (58 off 52 balls with 10 boundaries) and Lukman Mariwala (43 off 60 balls with 5 boundaries) remained the main scorers for the side. For Mysore, Pawan Desh Pandey claimed 4 for 24 and Kranti Kumar took 4 for 45. Pawan was declared the man of the match.

Punjab Police pip South Central Railway

Chandigarh, October 2
The hockey team of Punjab Police drubbed South Central Railway, in tie breaker, during a match of 44th SN Vohra’s All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament, being played here today. Opening the team’s account, Mandeep Singh from Punjab Police scored a goal in the 9th minute. However, after seven minutes, Jaswinder leveled the score for South Central Railways. With both team’s locking at 1-1, former Indian hockey player Rajpal put the police team ahead in the 19th minute. But again the joy was cut short by Mayank of railways, in the 27th minute, when he put the score at 2-2.Thereafter, Salwinder (43rd minute) for police and Deepak (59th minute) railways scored a brace each to tie the score, Later in the tie-breaker, Punjab police defeated South Central Railways by 6-5.

In another closely contested match, Punjab and Sind Bank defeated SGGS Club, Sector 26, 3-2. The young side of SGGS Club maintained the lead till first 40 minutes of the game with Ranjit Singh striking twice in 33rd minute and 37th minutes, respectively. However, the winning side made a strong come back and played better with Gagandeep Singh (41st minute), Ranjit Singh (45th minute) and Gurjant Singh (53rd minute) scoring a brace each.

Basketball Assn selects girls’ team 

Chandigarh, October 2
The Chandigarh Basketball Association selected local girls’ team to participate in the 31st Youth National Basketball Championship to be held in Chandigarh from October 7 to 14.

Boxing Coaching Centre-42 emerge overall winners

The team of Boxing Coaching Centre, Sports Complex, Sector 42, lifted the overall trophy with 27 points in the ongoing 38th Chandigarh Senior State Men and 14th Chandigarh Senior State Women Boxing Championship, held here today. While boxers of SD College, Sector 32, took runners-up spot with 23 points in the boys’ category. In the women’s category Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, was declared as the winners with 11 points while Government College for Girls, Sector 11, awarded with the runners-up trophy with 7 points. Jabir Singh, DSP, Chandigarh Police, was the chief guest on the opening of the final bouts and RL Sharma, Divisional Manager of National Insurance Company, Chandigarh, distributed awards.
