A clean sweep
Ever since Amitabh Bachchan responded to the call for Sawacch Bharat Abhiyaan, celebs are taking up the broom
Mona

It's the Big B leading from the front at aamchi Mumbai. The Clean India campaign, that kick-starts on October 2, has Indians all charged up. To have a clean nation as envisaged by Bapu, whose birthday we celebrate today and taken forward by our country's Prime Minister, has made us get up and take notice. The campaign has already registered a strong presence in online media.

Come to think of it, we Indians who take pride in being one of the leading nations in many spheres, be it technology or spirituality, how come we fail at something as basic as cleanliness? We talk to people in the glamour world and they surprise us with their enthusiasm about the cause, if only the same is picked up by all of us…

Catch them young
Evelyn Sharma, film actor

I think it's a great initiative from our government, and I am really hoping that lots of people come forward to support Sawacch Bharat Abhiyaan.

Where we slipped

I think what we teach our kids, makes a huge difference. Cleanliness is as important as eating and sleeping. It's just that kids learn by watching their elders, and if we don't set a great example we don't expect them to learn.

I pledge to

Of course, I will participate in it. By doing something as simple as not throwing garbage on the roads, which I generally also don't do, we make ourselves part of plan.

Step next

I think spreading awareness is the best solution. Even putting heavy fine on the person who is caught littering or spitting on the roads will surely make a huge difference.

Make a difference
Anindita Nayar, film actor

I feel this is an amazing initiative. Finally after a lot of talks, we have a concrete step that will take care of this menace.

Where we slipped

I feel that we as a people are very selfish. As long as something is not affecting us, we are okay with it. It is this very thinking that has led us to slip in such a drastic manner. Also, lack of facilities contributes majorly to the lack of cleanliness.

I pledge to

I would like to participate in my own little way that would make a difference.

Step up

I think education and awareness is the key to the solution. We need to be pro- active. We need to spread this message as far and wide, so that there is greater participation from the people.

Be strict
Chandni Bhagwanani, TV actor

I feel bad when I see garbage, dust in public places. Even the holy places (like Haji Ali in Mumbai) are not clean.

Where we slipped

Cleanliness is our moral responsibility but most of us fail at this.

I pledge to

My mom always says, "Cleanliness is next to godliness". I always believe in keeping our surroundings clean, so I will surely be a part of this campaign.

Step up

Strict laws for cleanliness should be made.

Rise above carelessness
Aastha Chaudhary, TV actor

I appreciate this initiative. Cleanliness and hygiene should be major issues and this step of Swachha Bharat Abhiyan stands for it.

Where we slipped

I guess we slipped in our duty as a citizen…our careless attitude is the root-cause of the filthy nation.

I pledge to

I'm going to participate and not just because it's a government's initiative but because it's my duty as a responsible citizen.

Step next

Self-discipline is the best way. If each individual promises him/herself not to litter around, he/she will abide by the notion of cleanliness.

Please don't add
Ali Fazal, film actor

I feel that this is a fantastic move by the government. For the first time we are hearing about such an initiative being undertaken on such a huge scale. I think it is high time we looked at hygiene and cleanliness as an important issue that affects the country.

Where we slipped

I think it's more about the mindset. So one more plastic bag on the road, just another plastic bottle on the road etc… When we litter the road, we think that it's already so dirty, what's one more piece of waste, but never think about not contributing to the already existing mess.

I pledge to

Yes! Why not? If the government is leading all the way, then I think it's time we reciprocated.

Step next

In my opinion, what can make our country cleaner is people's participation. If even 20 per cent of the population comes out, we can achieve monumental results.

It's a moral duty
Kapil Nirmal, TV actor

I was watching Narendra Modi's speech at Madison, where he spoke of Swachha Bharat Abhiyan and Cleaning Ganga campaign. Cleanliness is our basic fundamental and moral duty, I really appreciate this plan.

Where we slipped

I think lack of proper civic sense is responsible for this.

I pledge to

I will not only take part but also motivate others to make our nation clean and green.

Step up

Spitting around should be prohibited too. Trash bins should be properly utilized and public places should not be littered.

Practice what you read
Ankita Bhargava, TV actor

It is indeed very essential. We have just read about cleanliness in school but have never put it into practice.

Where we slipped

If we can keep our homes clean, why can't we do the same for public places? The public doesn't consider this nation as their own.

I pledge to

I pledge to always dispose garbage in the right way. I also pledge to spread this awareness among people and inspire them to treat this country with respect.

Step up

There should be cleanliness policing. There should be fines levied on littering.

What if Mahatma Gandhi was on Facebook? We would have countless quotes, selfie moments and some fashion shots too!
Manpriya Singh

Thinkstock

If Gandhi was on Facebook…There would definitely be many more than 79 volunteers accompanying him on the historic salt march to Dandi. The present calls for just as much of imagination as history. We don't know what it would be like if Gandhi had an Ipad but if the Ipad generation had Gandhi, things would be different. Very Different.

During the times, when the father of the nation has been relegated to currency notes, the young ones take an imaginative trip sans the history lane on what would it be like if Gandhi were alive…

Quotable quotes

Almost every quote that's quotable comes from the historical icon. Only if someone had the time to mull over them. If Gandhi was alive, his every word of wisdom would have gone viral. Not that it hasn't, but not quite like if he were posting it live. Deepak Hasija, a pass out from Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, quotes his favourite, "I think his famous saying, 'First we ignore them, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win,' would have resonated and have thousands of likes."

Everything he had to say was either ahead of times or timeless. Who can forget the, 'There is nothing that wastes the body like worry-Mahatma Gandhi.'

Fashionably Gandhi

Picture the showstopper with a walking stick. Someone would have definitely roped him in as the showstopper at the several fashion weeks across the country. "Circular rimmed glasses, dhoti, bare chest, khadi…it doesn't get more experimental or fashionable than that. Speak of a defined style," smiles Kanika Dhamija, political science student. All the designers working on khadi collection, with organic fabric and Indian raw materials would have received a proud nod of approval. Wonder if Winston Churchill would like to take his words back posthumously. For 'the half naked fakir' is definitely cool among the young.

Selfie and Gandhi

A selfie would have been redefined a concept. The proud moment of having launched a Civil Disobedience Movement, Quit India Movement, while in a conference with Lord Mountbatten….every historical event would have called for a selfie on his part to keep the fans posted. Endorse a cause, do some charity and while at it picture you and let everybody know. Have you earned your selfie yet?

On a serious note

Then man who fasted and prayed to combat riots in Calcutta, visited Delhi to stop rioting, opposed the decision to divide of the country into India and Pakistan, would have felt disgusted at the issue of Telangana and several political ills (read parties) ailing the country. Opines Dr Manish Sharma, Chairperson, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, "He would have first and foremost taken up the causes of cleanliness and education system at the basic level. With core things having taken care of, petty issues wouldn't have arisen."

Quit India moments!

There are countless issues that deserve a Quit India moment, if not a movement. "He would have definitely not approved of mindless consumerism and certainly spoken up against the disposable goods culture infesting the shopping mall generation," speaks Amrita Ahuja, history student, Panjab University. She laughs, "He would have definitely fainted at the sight of Burberry, Selfridges and other British labels making their snooty way to India."

Who knows? He sure would have the ability to enjoy a hearty laugh at himself. Didn't Gandhi say, "If I had no sense of humour, I would have long ago committed suicide."

Dapper denim
Pillows, cushion covers, quilts or carpets, there are many options to indulge in with denim…
Sukhmani

Just like having the perfect pair of jeans, incorporating denim into your interiors can be just as stylish. Denim is a classic material in fashion and interior design, and has been a common thread seen throughout most runway shows over the past few years.

Due to its durability and affordable appeal, denim is a smart and an innovative material to use in interior design. It is also a favourite item of clothing, simply because it can be teamed up with any colour and pattern. From upholstery, pillows, draperies, bed comforters, picture frames, cushion covers, quilts, carpets and dining table covers, there is a whole range of options to indulge in with denim. You can dress denim up or dress it down; it always works. So whether your interior is for a children's room or your living room, denim may be just the fabric you are looking for. Introduce bold blue denim into your decor by pairing it with a contrasting colour, for instance, against a yellow wall, to make your space pop up. Denim doesn't have to be only blue. You can go for a sofa that is wrapped in charcoal grey denim, which is quite elegant. It is this quality of the fabric that has made it a wonder to work with as a concept in decor. Denim works well with pine and honey-coloured wood finishes.

Denim on walls looks unique, especially if the theme is a cowboy one for the boy's room, or if the girls love the outdoors and horses. However, you need not necessarily have a theme to put up the fabric on your walls. Denim fits in comfortably against walls of white, camel and yellow.

Since denim is a plain fabric, it takes well to dressing up with trims. You can mix and match trims for upholstery and curtains. Lighten up the look of denim with crisp whites, cotton pique and pastel polka dots.

If you don't wish to make much of an investment, go the DIY (Do It Yourself) way. Do you have a favorite pair of denims that you don't have the heart to give away? Well, now you won't have to. Reuse your old jeans and use them around your house. Here are a few tips.

Lampshade: If you're bored of your lampshade, just cut your denim into small pieces and stick them on the lampshade top. This way, you have a new lampshade in no time.

Cushion covers/quilts: Cut the fabric into small squares and stitch them together. You now have a funky patchwork denim cushion cover or quilt.

Multi-purpose holder: If you have a lot of jeans that aren't being used, this is probably the best thing to make. Snip the pockets off all the jeans and keep them aside. Cover a thick board with a fabric of your choice and stick the pockets on to the board with fabric glue. You could use this board as a pen-holder in your room or put it up in the kitchen to hold your cutlery.

Woven denim rug: Ready to get your weave on? Depending on your enthusiasm for the task, you can create a small, useful jean trivet or an impressively woven denim rug.

Denim pouf: Cover up an old pouf with patches of jean material and you have a masterpiece.

Outdoor furniture: The woven denim straps on a charpai (Indian string cot) and fold-up lawn chairs look amazingly stylish.

From indigo to the most-faded, sun bleached pale blue, there is an irresistible quality to the soft yet tough fabric. So use it in innovative ways in your décor and enjoy the compliments.

Save your plant
It is important to know the causes behind breaking of plants and also methods to protect them
satish narula

The normal query by the gardeners is why do new plants die? As the planting season has just concluded, there are loads of queries about the causes and ways to save plants. There are multiple reasons for the malady. It is important to visit a nursery that is in the vicinity of your garden to find some answers. Plants being damaged during transit or the breaking of earth ball are serious setbacks to plants. It is better to replace the plant with a healthy sapling rather than try to revive it and waste time. Now is the fashion of procuring grown up plants from the market or even transplanting these from one place to the other on the same premises? Prefer to get plants that are already 'set' and are growing healthy in bags that are big enough to support good amount of roots. And if these are to be transplanted on the same premises, there is better opportunity to have it extracted with good amount of earth ball.

As and when the plants are transplanted, there is bound to be a 'transplant shock' that mostly leads to die-back of twigs. It is the drying back of growing points on the terminals of the plants. This is very serious; if the drying back is not stopped it progresses very fast killing the whole of the branch in no time. The die-back proceeds from top to bottom. As soon as this kind of dying is observed, the dried portion should be clipped taking along with it a little of healthy part of the twig. If the branch is more than an inch thick, one must apply blitox paste, made by adding a few drops of water to the powder. It is easily available in the market. It fact, this should be followed in any case where a twig or branch is pruned.

In most of the cases, it is seen that the plants are planted in haste without making a pit in advance with the result that when the plants are watered, they bend on one or the other side due to the settling of soil. In case this bending is not corrected, the plant may attain lopsided growth and break even with the slightest increase in wind velocity. This is more so in case of fruit trees, the branches of which bend and break under their own weight. Now comes another most damaging part when the staking is done incorrectly. Mostly the gardeners either give support of a 'Y' shaped twig or an iron rod that is secured in soil at the side to which the plant bends. In both the cases, the support tremendously damages the plants as it keeps rubbing with them. The support should be secured on the side opposite to the bending plant and the plant must be lifted by pulling it slowly by tying it with a single round of rope. The damaged part of the plant should be painted with blitox slury.

Tough job

Actor Harshad Chopra, who is currently seen in Humsafars, recently shot for a swimming pool sequence. So naturally, he had to take off his shirt but the water was too cold so he kept shivering. Well, we are not complaining!

Taking it to the heart

Mohit Malik, who plays the role of an abusive husband, Samrat, in Doli Armaanon Ki, is apparently getting affected by his character in real life. His demanding character has taken a toll on his health and the situation seems to be getting worse. During a scene recently, he had to beat up his onscreen wife Neha Marda with a belt. But it was too much for him as his blood pressure shot up and heartbeat became irregular. He consulted his doctor, who has now advised him to consult a psychiatrist.

Kiss & don’t tell!

Actors Anshul Pandey and Priyanka Udhwani, who are currently seen as an on-screen couple in TV show Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, recently shot an intimate sequence. They even locked lips briefly. But surprisingly, the makers decided not to telecast it. We wonder why?

Avinesh Rekhi

What do you like the most about Chandigarh?

I love the city because it is my hometown. You won't find a city this clean in entire India. It is very green, beautiful and peaceful. You got to live here to know it.

Which are your favourite hangout joints?

My favourite hangout joints are Arabic Fusion and Nik's Bakery. But if I feel like eating pani poori or sweets, I go to Gopal Sweets. It is very famous in Chandigarh.

What is your plan post Main Na Bhoolungi?

I am very flexible as I love my work. I am open to ideas; just the story and concept should be good.

Do you have any fitness goals?

I am a fitness freak. Whenever I'm in Chandigarh, I eat everything as I go there to relax and enjoy. But once I am back in Mumbai, I get back to my daily routine of going to the gym, eating healthy food and following a proper diet.

What difference do you find between life in Chandigarh and Mumbai?

Life in Chandigarh for me was very easy, everything here was very convenient. After my graduation, I moved to Mumbai and it has taught me new things. Mumbai has a very fast life, but it taught me the value of hardwork.

Are you open to working in films?

Yes, of course. I want to try my luck in films. I am currently trying to get a foothold in Punjabi films. If I get a chance to act in a Bollywood film, I will go for it. It will be my dream come true!

Alia’s brand of style
Alia Bhatt
trend talk: Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt has become a designer with Jabong and she recently launched her collection for the brand. The pretty and stylish actress who is a youth icon of sorts talks about style, influences, and more.

Fashion sense

I would like to design for Parineeti Chopra. My fashion line is for every girl. A mid- twenty or a mid-thirty can wear my clothes. The collection is very simple, it's very me. I wanted to be involved in this so we sat and discussed a lot. It's a fall winter collection. So there are sweat shirts. It is very personal and special for me. I want everybody to enjoy this. A lot of importance has been given to animal prints as I love animals.

Working with Manish

I have worked with Manish Malhotra in my first film. He is a very enthusiastic person and he changes his style with time. He is always excited to do new things.

Designing dad

He is very comfortable with his black and blue denims and his chappals. No one can give him shoes. Recently on his birthday I gave him a pair of designer chappals and he asked me how much it cost? And wherever he goes he will say this is a designer chappal and my daughter has given me.

Vidya goes back to Kolkata

The actress will shoot on the auspicious day of Ashtami in Kolkata. It will mark the first day of shoot of Humari Adhuri Kahani also starring Emraan Hashmi. Two years after her Kolkata connection—she shot in the City of Joy for Kahaani—Vidya will return to the city for the first shot of Mohit Suri's love story Humari Adhuri Kahaani. The shooting will happen on Thursday and will see Vidya Balan shoot at a Durga Puja pandal. She will then be joined by her co-star Emraan Hashmi for a few scenes in the city.

Action costs

Fox Star Studios has produced Bang Bang for a whopping budget of Rs 140 crore (including prints and advertising). It is one of the costliest films made in Bollywood. We decode why the hottest film of 2014 wouldn't be the same in case it was made with a lesser budget.

Expensive pair

Bang Bang has the hottest pairing in Bollywood. Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif are the two of the biggest superstars of the country and Bang Bang has them both in it looking their hottest best. They are also the highest paid actors in the country.

Never-seen-before action

The action in Bang Bang is simply out of the world, something that Bollywood has never seen before. The makers roped in Andy Armstrong (a Hollywood action director) to deliver these breath-taking, death-defying stunts.

Praise for Sonam

Sonam Kapoor's fashion sense and beauty got praised by none other than Tommy Hilfiger, the designer who is in India for the brand's anniversary celebrations. He hosted a private party in the Capital and invited the Bollywood star and some others.

Lisa is back

Indo-Canadian beauty Lisa Ray is all set to make her comeback with a Kashmir-based love story opposite Sanjay Suri. However, the film's ongoing shooting has been delayed because of the recent floods in the Valley. It is now scheduled to be shot there in the spring of 2015.

Poor show

Many movies released last week but none have made a mark. Desi Kattey collected around Rs 1.5 crore. Daawat-E- Ishq and Khoobsurat are leading with collections of Rs 25 crore and Rs 22 crore, respectively.

Khoobsurat bonding

Sonam Kapoor is very happy with the success of Khoobsurat and even happier that her pairing with Faawad Khan has been appreciated. She wants to work with the Pakistani heart-throb again for sure.

Nothing off-beat about SRK

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has had a tryst with off-beat films with Maya Memsaab, Swades, Chak De! India, but does not understand the concept of this genre as he feels his presence can turn any unconventional film into a mainstream money-spinner. The 48-year-old actor, best known for his romantic hero act in films, said he did take a few risks with his movies but since he is such a big star, his experimental films also find an audience.

Off-beat films

What is an off-beat film? You put me in an off-beat film and it will become on-beat. Like Chak De! India was an off-beat film and it did really well money wise. It is the biggest success of my career. I think any film that I am part of will become bigger than it was meant to be as I am big movie star. Even if it is an off-beat movie, people will watch it and so it will become 'on-beat'. I did Maya Memsaab, Oh Darling Yeh Hai India, Darr, Baazigar, Swades, Chak De! India and others so I do off-beat films whenever I feel like doing it.

Master of choice

I will never do anything that others want me to do. I have enough money, I am a rich star, I am famous and have enough awards. I will do films that make me happy. Like I did Ra.One because my children like superheroes. My father played hockey, so I wanted to do Chak De. It is important to feel excited about doing what you want to," he said.

Acting and stardom

I have no worries at all. I am good at the craft, I am at a good level. I know my choices and do my best. I have no worries as every day you evolve as an actor. Actors don't worry and if they do they are not actors they are stars. And I am an actor. My stardom overshadows my work.

Haider is set in the Kashmir of the 90's and the problems which the state faced then form the backdrop. The master storyteller Vishal Bhardwaj teams up with Shahid Kapoor for Haider.
