Another guest appearance?
He is the superstar of the small screen in Pakistan and he has wowed the audience, young and old alike, on this side of the border too. His rugged good looks and measured act has won him fans, who just can't wait to see Fawad Afzal Khan on the big screen!
There was a time when people from both sides of the border wanted one cricket team. Now, that's a dream that couldn't be realised but in the film industry, we are inching towards it. As the current heartthrob of youngsters, Fawad, gets set to make a debut on silver screen, all eyes are fixed on him. First, he has already won the audiences' hearts playing Zaroon in the show Zindagi Gulzar Hai, second, Khoobsurat has created a buzz with Fawad like never before. There have been actors from Pakistan, before Fawad, who did garner attention in Bollywood—Ali Zafar, Veena Malik, Meera, Humaima Malick in the recent times and Salma Agha, Somi Ali, Mohsin Khan and Zeba Bakhtiar years ago. But mostly, they were one-film or two-film wonders. While most singers from Pakistan have enjoyed successful stints in India, actors are yet to make it to the top. Imran Abbas Naqvi debuted on big screen opposite Bipasha Basu in Creature 3D but failed to impress. However, with Fawad, an established actor, model and singer, the things looks optimistic. "Fawad's got this irresistible charm that's hard to miss," says Pooja Sharma, MA psychology student and a huge Fawad fan. "He has charmed his way as Zaroon and I can't wait to see him playing a prince in Khoobsurat," she giggles. While in the role of Zaroon, the audience saw different shades of the actor, it looks like he is rather restricted as Prince in Khoobsurat. Shashi Singal, a retired lecturer, shares her take, "Believe it or not, it's the script that makes or mars a hero. Fawad aced telly in Pakistan because he was backed by strong scripts, but as a hero in Khoobsurat, it's yet to be seen how much screen space he garners and how much he gets into the skin of the character. On the look of it, it's a Sonam's film all in all." That's a measured response but not something that Ajay and Shelly, strong Fawad's fans, go by. "Look, Fawad is an actor par excellence. He will shine in whatever space he gets," says Ajay, who has a computer business in Mohali. It's all about looks for Shelly, a young HR executive, "A beard and moustache add so much character to Fawad, he looks totally regal." Fawad's looks and grip on his craft is a given. Mahira Khan, his co-star in Pakistan's popular show Humsafar that too is due to make an appearance of Indian telly shortly, vouches for that. "Fawad is clinical when it comes to the execution of a scene. I consider him my practical mentor," says Mahira, who is as excited with his debut in Bollywood as Fawad's fans. Aamina Sheikh, who impressed the audience in India playing Aiman in Maat shown on Zindagi admits that Fawad Khan's debut opposite Sonam Kapoor in Khoobsurat will help other Pakistani actors get a foothold in Bollywood. Is Bollywood impressed? Or, will the audience make this actor, singer stay over here for time to come? The verdict will be out today… mona@tribunemail.com
Ambassador of creativity
Fawad has been one of the first Pakistani actors to generate a positive vibe even before his Bollywood debut, while his counterparts have failed to get acknowledged by Indian fans. Does he hope to be a game changer? "I feel grateful to people of India for giving me so much love and adulation. I can't say I would change anything, but all I would say is that I will always support my fraternity in every possible way, wherever it extends to. As an actor, it does help to achieve a level of creative and cultural sharing between the two countries. I would love to be an ambassador of love, peace and culture through my work. The amazing thing is that the appreciation comes from both the sides of the border.”

Simply irresistible!
Even before his big Bollywood debut, Pakistani actor Fawad Khan has managed to create a riot among women with his effortless charm. Getting into his Prince Charming mode with his upcoming film Khoobsurat with Sonam Kapoor, Fawad says he is overwhelmed with the response he is getting in India, especially from women. The duo, along with Kirron Kher, attended the Retreat Ceremony at Wagah recently to promote their film. And the conversation got interesting, as expected.
On his female fan following
Ask him if he has become used to the army of women surrounding him and he replies with a shy smile. "I am overwhelmed with all the attention I am getting. I feel privileged." His co-star Sonam Kapoor justifies Fawad's swoon-effect on women, "He is such an honest and amazing person that it reflects in his eyes. They say that camera catches the truth and his goodness of heart is captured on-screen as well. I wish there were guys like
him in India." Some encouragement! About Khoobsurat
Wearing his royal charm on screen, Fawad plays a Rajput prince in Khoobsurat. "I play a Vikram Rathore, a royal who believes in a disciplined life. He is a guy who lives a regimented life and has planned the next 10 years of his life in advance. Doing this film was like a journey for me, making a transition from any of the roles I have played till now. Everything was so beautiful, fun that I feel accomplished." Of course, having a bit more fun is our 'royal misfit', "I am a bit of a misfit in real life too, just like Milli, my character in the film. I don't believe in playing 'too-good-to-be-true' characters that I don't connect with. Being a misfit could be fun and I think every girl should try to be one," said Sonam Kapoor. Bollywood experience
Fun, is how Fawad describes his Bollywood outing so far. "Bollywood actors are big in Pakistan. And when I was offered this film, I was quite excited. In India, being a film star is a larger-than-life experience, quite unlike back home in Pakistan." His small screen popularity seems to have rubbed off to his big screen debut and his hit television drama Humsafar will premiere soon. Sonam, on the other hand is excited that the film will be releasing across Pakistan simultaneously. "I wanted to go to Pakistan to promote Khoobsurat but my professional commitments towards Sooraj Barjatiya's Prem Rattan Dhan Payo with Salman has kept me from it." On visiting Wagah
"I have no words to describe the experience. I had once before walked through the gates across the border while shooting for a project and it was electrifying. I feel a sense of ownership towards the people of India as I consider it a second home. You travel around the world and you are a Pakistani, but In India, you feel at home," says Fawad.

Ranbir is a huge part of my life: Katrina
Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif talks about her latest flick Bang Bang, sister Isabel and Ranbir Kapoor Bang Bang vs Knight
and Day
I have seen the original film and Siddharth Anand has just borrowed the film's structure. I will say that Bang Bang takes inspiration from Knight and Day, instead of calling it a remake. I am not playing a docile damsel in distress here. I am sure comparisons will be drawn but within the first ten minutes, you will know that it is unlike Knight and Day. I think it is just one action sequence that reminded me of the Hollywood film. Ibiza pictures
Well, that was an invasion on my privacy and my anger was an instinctive thing. I am comfortable with the media but I was hurt when I saw those pictures. I don't regret my actions. I still feel that there should be some boundaries. Isabel’s acting career
She was in Canada last week for the music launch of her first film. We are six sisters and she is my youngest sister, but she is very different from me. She has trained herself in acting and dancing over the past four years. The one thing she will have to do if she wants to work in Bollywood is overcoming the language barrier. She is starting her career with an English film because she is comfortable with it. It will be her decision if she wants to come here and do Hindi films. But no, I don't think I will ever make a film just for her. She is talented and confident, so I am sure she will get work on her own Status: Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir is a huge part of my life. But I am not getting married in the near future and I have not thought about it. I barely speak about my relationships. This is a stand I decided to take at an early stage of my career. Future films
It is interesting that I am working with Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan again, back-to-back in Bang Bang, Jagga Jasoos and Phantom. I am comfortable with all of them.

I’m at peace with my age: Shabana
Actress and social activist Shabana Azmi, who turned 64 Thursday, co-incidentally spent the day rehearsing for her play Happy Birthday Sunita. She adds that age is no bar for her as she has embraced life at all stages and advises everyone to do the same. You have turned 64! What plans this year?
My play Happy Birthday Sunita opens in London on September 19. On my birthday I will be in technical rehearsal till 10 pm.! Javed has come to be with me and I'm thrilled. No other plans needed! Do you enjoy the cake cutting and the gifts?
The cake cutting is a practice I do not like. When did it start in India and why, I do not know. In school, we were only allowed to give two sweets each to the entire class. It was a great leveller because it prevented the richer girls from being lavish and show the not-so-rich ones in poor light! I'm not a great stickler for giving or receiving presents on birthdays, anniversaries, etc. as a must do. I prefer giving a gift without an occasion if I feel it's something a friend will like. But surely you like something?
I must confess that flowers are my weakness and I love receiving them, especially Indian fragrant flowers—Mogra, Rajnigandha, Sontakka etc. Any unfulfilled dreams? I would have loved to play the piano! Alas! It's too late now. Which is the most memorable birthday you ever had?
My 50th birthday. All my friends came from various corners and Abba (father poet Kaifi Azmi) sat quietly through the noisy celebrations in a sherwani and 'topi' looking like the birthday person himself!! Javed was wonderful too, but it's too personal to share the details. 64... is it just a number or does it really mean a coming of age?
I'm at peace with my age. I've embraced life at all stages. I remember people were horrified when I celebrated my 50th! 'Don't announce your age', I was advised! How stupid is that. If you had to change one thing in your life, what would that be?
It's too personal to answer. Generations of actors consider you a role model. What advice do you have for them? Never become complacent, work hard. Embrace life! As an Indian actress, do you feel restricted by your age?
This is the best time to be an actor. There are many parts available for all age groups. It's no longer the stereotypical mother in a white sari and terrible wig sacrificing all for her family! — IANS

All is not well?
It seems all is not well with the team of Umesh Shukla's All Is Well. The film which stars Abhishek Bachchan, Asin, Rishi Kapoor and Smriti Irani seems to have been delayed yet again. The film, which earlier got postponed due to actress Smriti Irani's unavailability, as she was busy with the elections and handling her new job as the HRD minister, has now been running late in terms of its schedule.
A source informs us, "The film was supposed to wrap up its shoot by August end but has now been stretched on till almost September end, thus postponing the film to next year." Well, now going with this update, it seems Abhishek Bachchan will only have one major release this year in the form of Happy New Year and incidentally Ajay Devgn's Action Jackson and Karan Johar's Ungli will be the only two films clashing with each other on December 5.

Prepare to plant
For the upcoming winter, procure well-rotten and straw-free manure for your plants Satish Narula September rings the first bell for approaching winter and this is the time to alert the gardeners that they should start making preparations for winter planting, whether it is for winter annuals or the deciduous fruit trees. The first consideration is the procurement of well-rotten farmyard manure. This, the gardeners do not realise, is the most important aspect of gardening. In case you have your own system of storing cow dung to make farmyard manure, then this is not for you. But those who get it from outside will have to look for certain things like it should be well-rotten and free from straw. At times you are lured by some rehri-wala selling manure on the street. Mostly, the hump below the stake is hollow and what you get is hardly the quantity that you bargained for. As you get the manure, do not keep it exposed for long. You will lose nutrients. Immediately, put it in beds and mix well with the soil. As a general rule, the manure and fertilisers should be added to the beds at least a month before transplanting of the winter annuals is done. Similarly, for the planting of deciduous fruit trees in winter, the pits are made, for which, however, there is still time. Let us know about the correct procedure. Normally, the trees are planted making pits and immediately the planting is done. There is a striking difference in growth from those that were planted with procedure. For fruit trees, a pit with one meter diameter and a similar depth is made. The upper half of the soil is kept on one side to be mixed with an equal quantity of well-rotten farmyard manure. About 30 gram of Gama BHC is mixed with the mixture per pit. The pit is filled about six inches above the ground level so that when it is watered, there is settling of soil and the level automatically comes down to the ground level. In case it goes still down, add more of manure and soil mixture to make up the level. Another big thing to do is collecting the bulbs from storage or from any source that you have. Keep these in a cool place for a few days. The best time to plant bulbs is October. Any early planting may lead to rotting of most of these as the warm weather with high humidity is most conducive for disease incidence. While preparing the bulbs for planting, these should be treated with bavistin. The bulbs should be dipped in bavistin solution made by mixing the powder at two gram to a liter of water. Keep the bulbs dipped for two hours, put these in shade for drying and these are ready for planting. (Narula is a Chandigarh-based horticulturist and landscapist) |

Being desi
Studying to be a journalist, Simpy Singh (Manreet Kaur) got into theatre and eventually films, a coincidence that she is immensely grateful for. On Thursday, this happy girl launched Gionee's GPAD G5 and shared titbits from life before heading for a trip to UK, a professional-cum- personal one.
"Born to doctors, mum a gynaecologist and dad an eye surgeon, I wanted to do something different. I did theatre during college and ended up in films," shares Simpy, who was last seen in Yaaran Da Katchup. Like everyone else today, she too heavily depended on her phone for all her work and fun. Associated with Gionee for last one year, she is delighted about GPAD G5, the latest slim hexacore smartphone, "With latest features, like 5.5' HD IPS, 4.4 android support; 8GB+1 GB memory, the look and feel is so rich and is incredibly light at this size." A phone addict, Simpy adds, "I am on What's App largely; so much you can do and it's free." Simpy loves to dance and has learnt kathak as well as salsa, "Be it any party, even if a house party, and you will see me getting up first to dance." Having appeared in Hindi, Marathi and Punjabi films, she observes, "Being a Punjabi, I love that 'ghaint' feeling on Punjabi sets, Bollywood is thoroughly professional." She will be seen in Ameesha Patel's production Desi Magic next. "I am playing Ameesha Patel's sister," says Simpy who has changed her name from Manreet, which was too common, to her nickname that she was known as in her circle. There is another Punjabi and Hindi flick lined up, but she is yet to sign the dotted line.

Pulling the right strings
Some people just have it all, don't they? How can someone look like sugar, sound like melody and have the lazy ease of autumn? Don't let his picture deceive you; watching Kurukshetra's 27-year-old Harpreet play the guitar on a sunny summer afternoon makes you forget the sultry day's logistics.
In Chandigarh on the invitation of Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, singer, guitarist and composer Harpreet is looking forward to his second performance in tricity, at the Tagore Theatre on Friday. In a breezy conversation, Harpreet talks to us about his musical influences, future plans and more. Coming out with his first album in a couple of months, Harpreet says he doesn't plan which song goes where and how his compositions take place. "My first album has eight songs, whereas I've written more than twenty. They've all been composed in parts; it's work in progress," Harpreet opens the dialogue. Having composed the anthem for ADR (Association for Democratic Reforms) to spread awareness about voting, Harpreet says his messages are many, but medium remains one. "Whatever little I can understand of the society, I'd like to let people know through my music. I don't want to stick to one or the other issue and curtail my reach. I don't necessarily have to pen these issue-based lyrics myself. I also like to pick up people's writings and poetry from here and there, and amalgamate them into my songs. The agenda is to not roll out crappy music that sells on shock value," he elaborates. Bollywood, then? "Not really. If I receive an offer, it would depend on what they expect out of me. If it were up to me, I'd like to continue doing my own compositions." His first, yet-to-be-released album, Ajab Ishq…Maati Da, focuses on Sufi fusion. His first song from the album, Ajnabi, already has 1,645 views on YouTube. About his musical inspirations, Harpreet says, "Dave Matthews, Freddy Mercury, Rafi sahab, Kishore ji, Indian Ocean, Rabbi — the list is endless. I also draw inspiration from Hindustani Classical music, thanks to the two years I spent at Gandharva Mahavidyala, Delhi, at the beginning of my musical journey." (Catch Harpreet perform live at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18, on Friday at 7 pm) somya@tribunemail.com

Dancing to her own tune
Actress Mouni Roy, who enthralled the viewers as Sati in Mahadev, is currently preparing for the grand finale of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. We catch up with her to talk about dance and more. How many hours are you putting up for rehearsal and practice?
Five to six hours a day. I have a back spasm problem since about eight months now. Everyone at Jhalak house has one or the other physical issues. I am not focusing on my back problem though. Seeing everyone focused on rehearsal and dancing is sure an inspiring environment. What made you do Jhalak?
I wanted to do Jhalak for long. I was offered it on many occasions, but I couldn't do it for various reasons. So, this time when the offer came I lapped it up. How do you maintain such a
slim figure?
It is genetic. I eat everything. I am not at all into dieting. I love rice. We are dancing so much so there is no question of gaining weight. I am trying to stay healthy, but have not been to the gym since a year. I am not allowed to work-out because of a back problem. I have always been a vegetarian. There is no specific reason why I don't like to eat non-vegetarian though. How is Punit Pathak as choreographer?
I was praying to get him as my choreographer. Last year, Lauren was fantastic. Ironically, I got him and jumped with joy when I came to know that I would be paired with him. Which Bollywood actress is your inspiration in terms of dancing?
Madhuri Dixit. From Ek Doo Teen to Dhak Dhak Karne Laga to Devdas, I like all her songs.
