Honour killing
Girl’s father, uncle get death
Panchkula, September 17
In the murder case of a 15-year-old girl in Panchkula, which took place nearly 11 months ago, the victim’s father and paternal uncle were today sentenced to death by Panchkula District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi.

Late satirist back as brand ambassador of traffic police 
Chandigarh, September 17
Jaspal Bhatti After discontinuing with the name of the late Jaspal Bhatti, satirist, as the brand ambassador of the Chandigarh traffic police following his wife Savita Bhatti’s association with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the local police have once again named Bhatti as their brand ambassador. On March 3, two days after Savita Bhatti was named the AAP candidate for the LS poll from the Chandigarh seat (later she withdrew from the race), Manish Chaudhary, SSP (Traffic), UT, had passed an order to discontinue with the name of Jaspal Bhatti as the brand ambassador of the traffic police.

Man robbed of Rs 2.5 lakh 
Chandigarh, September 17
A Nayagaon resident was robbed of Rs 2.5 lakh near Khuda Alisher this afternoon while he was on his way home. The complainant, Mandeep Singh, claimed that he had gone to the SBI branch at the PGI to deposit the money. He claimed that since the server of the bank was not working, he decided to return.

CGHS dispensary faces closure
The CGHS dispensary in Sector 45, Chandigarh. Chandigarh September 17
The only dispensary catering to pensioners in the city and region (North of Delhi) under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is on the verge of shutting down. In a setback to nearly 25,000 retired Central government employees and their families, the UT Administration has been repeatedly sending notices for shutting down of the dispensary in view of its proposal to convert the dispensary into a polyclinic.

Brace for traffic snarls in city this festival season

Be ready to face traffic snarls in markets during the festival season.Upset with the cold response given by the UT Education Department last year over the traffic police proposal to convert government school grounds as parking lots during evening hours, this year the UT traffic police have decided not to send any such proposal.

Mohali civic body to launch cleanliness drive on Sept 23
Mohali, September 17
On the Prime Minister’s call for “Swacch Bharat”, the Municipal Corporation (MC), Mohali, will hold a month-long cleanliness campaign from September 23. Commissioner of the corporation Uma Shankar Gupta held a meeting with employees of the civic body to draw up a plan of action. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the citizens of the country and officers to launch a special “Swacch Bharat” campaign to improve the state of sanitation in the country.

DSP Rajinder Singh Sohal Mohali DSP, Special Branch, Rajinder Singh Sohal has been transferred to Rajpura. Ramoowalia back on Mohali ward delimitation panel

In a turn of events, the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government has again made Balwant Singh Ramoowalia as member of Mohali’s ward delimitation committee. In the latest development, the Secretary to Government of Punjab, Department of Local Government, Ashok Kumar Gupta, issued a notification in which it was stated that the name of Ramoowalia, a former union Cabinet minister, was notified in place of Kulwant Singh.

MLA seeks Rs 100-crore grant for Nayagaon

Chandigarh: The kindergarten block of St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44-D, was taken on a nature walk. The Permanent Lok Adalat (Public Utility Services), Mohali, has partly allowed an application moved by Ranjit Singh of Badanpur village in Kharar tehsil in which he had stated that Rs 35,027 was being demanded from him by the respondent, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), on an allegation that he was committing theft of electricity through a “kundi” connection.

A local court today sent four persons to seven-year jail in an attempt to murder case. Eight other accused in the case have been acquitted.

The Chandigarh Police have claimed to have solved the murder case of a labourer whose body was found near Labour Chowk, Sector 20, on September 10. The deceased was identified as Ram Kishan, a resident of Kushi Nagar district, in UP.
Police officials said the accused, Sriniwas Yadav, a resident of Gorakhpur district had been arrested in the case. During investigation, it came to the fore that Ram Kishan was working as a labourer and was an alcoholic. It was found that September 9, the deceased and a person named Lambu were seen together at Badheri Chowk, where they had consumed liquor together. Apart from the name “Lambu” there was no clue about his identity or whereabouts.

Kalyani, Dev win titles
Chandigarh, September 17
Table tennis players Kalyani and Dev Saini claimed the glittering trophy in the women’s and men’s category, respectively, on the concluding day of 2nd Chandigarh State Table Tennis Ranking Tournament, here. In the final of the women’s category, Kalyani of SD College defeated Naina Suri of same college 4-3. In final the title winner went down in first two sets by 7-11 and 4-11 while in the third gathered win at 11-9. In the next Kalyani again tasted dust at 10-12 however in the next three sets she bounced at 11-4, 11-4 and 11-2.

Chandigarh lads failed to perform against Ludhiana, in the ongoing match of the Katoch Shield, held in Ludhiana. After resuming from their overnight score of 215 runs, Chandigarh side was bowled out for 279 runs in 81 overs, conceding a vital 51 runs lead to Ludhiana on first innings.

Skating officials nominated 
Chandigarh, September 17
Local skating officials, Harpreet Singh of Principal Accountant General (A&E), Punjab, and Sarabjit Singh, skating coach, UT Sports Department, have been nominated to officiate in the 16th Asian Roller Skating Championship. The tournament is scheduled to be held at Haining (China) from September 19 to September 29. Harpreet Singh has already officiated in more than 40 international matches while Sarabjit Singh will officiate for first time in any international championship.
