Street vendors facing eviction despite law
New Delhi, September 5 "Since August 1, both the police and the municipal authorities have been harassing us and not allowing us to put up our stalls. Cops are not ready to listen to us when we tell them about the new street vendors' law. The area was cordoned off yesterday. They seized our items and told us to meet the ACP and the SHO to get them released. Most of us are poor and don't know where to go," said Abdul who has been selling electronic watches in the Jama Masjid area for 25 years. However, the SHO concerned said, "We are bound to protect the area under the 2006 Delhi High Court direction." Complaints were also made by other vendors. "We have been forced to pay a 'hafta' of about Rs 300-500 depending on our capacity and if we refuse it, the police harass us," said a vendor in Lajpat Nagar. With benefits of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 still to reach the hapless lot, an NGO National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) has decided to file a contempt of court against the Delhi Police. Accusing the Delhi Police of high-handedness, NASVI national coordinator Arbind Singh said, "Despite the Street Vendors Act, the vendors are being forcibly evicted from their place of vending and all the complaints have fallen on deaf ears. There is no proper grievance redressal system. That’s why we have decided to move the court." |

Hearing the commotion, Farha's family and neighbours reached the spot. The police were informed about the incident. Farha and Soni were admitted to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, where Farah was declared dead. Soni is still being treated. The police suspect that Ayub allegedly attacked the victim to take revenge on her and her family. He had been stalking her for the past few months. She lodged a complaint with the police against him after he allegedly molested her. Ayub was arrested on July 13 and was sent to jail. Farha's family then shifted to their present house at Z Block from rented accommodation, which belonged to Ayub's father. The police have registered a case and are searching for Ayub. |
