Database to curb crime at IGI airport
New Delhi, September 4 The creation of database contains the basic details and job profile of every employee, according to the police. A police officer privy to the details of this project said it began last year when the police started compiling the data of every employee working at Aerocity. Aerocity, a commercial complex consisting of hotels and malls has been a cause of concern for security agencies due to its proximity to the airport runway and a hangar of the Research and Analysis Wing. "We also decided to start making a similar database of the employees at the airport. So, we have asked about 58 agencies working at the airport to give us the details of their employees. There are about 20,000 employees according to DIAL (the IGI airport operator)," said the officer. Last month, the Delhi Police held a meeting with DIAL and the agencies working at the airport. "We told them about the format in which we would like the data of the employees. The format will contain a photograph of an employee, his or her current and permanent address, the job profile, place of work, airport entry pass number and the identity proof the employee gave to the employer," said the officer. The database will be stored electronically. The police have already been receiving the details of employees from different agencies at the airport. "By compiling this data, we are doing two things - prevention and detection of crime. It will be a deterrent, because they know that they are in the police records. Secondly, the database will be helpful to us for the investigation of an incident committed at the airport and its vicinity, be it a theft or terrorist attack," said another police officer. According to the statistics of the Delhi Police, 58 cases of theft at the airport and its vicinity have been registered by them until May this year. Sixteen people were arrested in these cases. Last year, 68 theft cases were registered and 15 people were arrested. In 2012, 52 cases of theft were registered and 40 people were arrested. "Most of these cases of theft took place inside the buildings of Terminal-3 and Terminal-1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport. And these thefts were of things stolen from people's baggage. A few of the cases took place outside the terminal buildings, at areas around the airport (city side), the cargo area and Terminal-2. But the theft at these locations were of items such as iron grills, iron sheets and cable wires," said another police officer. At the airport, the place from where the "registered baggage" (not the hand baggage, but the baggage which the passengers give at the counter of the airline concerned) is kept on a trolley from the in line baggage system and taken to the aircraft or when the baggage is loaded into the aircraft, are "blind spots" where theft is "expected" to happen, the officer said. "The people who are arrested for theft at the airport are loaders or the ground handling staff. They have admitted that the thefts happen at these "blind spots," added the officer. |

DU girl raped by traffic cop
New Delhi, September 4 The constable was detained by the police and was being questioned until filing this story. A police officer privy to the details of the case said the student had filed a complaint against Giriraj at the Samaypur Badli police station last evening. She alleged that two months ago Giriraj had raped her in a hotel located in the same area. Giriraj, who is a resident of Ghaziabad, is posted as a traffic police constable in outer Delhi. The student is pursuing her graduation through correspondence from Delhi University. She had allegedly met Giriraj in Samaypur Badli. A few months after they met, Giriraj allegedly told her that he is going to marry her. According to the complainant, she repeatedly told Singh to marry her but he duly refused. In July, he took her to a hotel and allegedly raped her there. The student also told the police that she was reluctant to file an FIR as she perceived a threat from the accused. On Wednesday she mustered the courage and filed a complaint against Giriraj. "The accused is being questioned and will be placed under arrested after the questioning," said the officer. |

General secretary candidate Aman Gautam, a student of BA I of Venkteswara College, said there are several problems that a first year student faces in the university such as absence of reading material, approachable transportation, accommodation and remedial classes. Vikrmaditya, MA Buddhist Studies student, joint secretary nominee, raised the issue of students who study in outer circle colleges and who commute from distant areas to Delhi. |

Govt to auction 4-wheelers’ special numbers online
New Delhi, September 4 "Initially about 140 fancy numbers will be put to e-auction in the first round. The desirous and eligible persons can participate in the e-auction by registering online," Kuldeep Singh Gangar, Special Commissioner, Transport and Executive Officer DTIDC. After online registration, which will be open for one week, the person will receive a unique acknowledgement number (UAN). The bidder will have to deposit a demand draft issued by any nationalized bank in the office of DTIDC at Kashmere Gate. It will be deposited as a reserved price of the desired fancy number. "The online bidding process will be held for three days. One person can bid for 10 fancy registration vehicle numbers against one UAN," said Gangar, adding that, however, one person will be allocated only one fancy registration number against each UAN. For obtaining more than one VIP number for more than one car, the person will have to register separately for each vehicle and acquire UAN. The successful bidder will have to deposit the bid amount within three working after the declaration of results which will be published on the website of the Transport Department. "The amount to be deposited will be the successful bid amount minus the reserve price already deposited as demand draft, after which he will be given the allotment letter," said the officer. |

N. Railway, NDRF hold mock drill
New Delhi, September 4 The mock drill also serves a purpose to analyze shortcomings, if any, arising out during the joint rescue exercise so that corrective measures may be taken, a spokesperson for the Northern Railway said. The mock drill demonstrated the rescue efforts made by the NDRF and Railways after the major derailment of a special passenger train "Yatra Special" in which a coach had derailed and overturned and passengers were trapped inside the coach. NDRF and Railways rescue team personnel arrived at the accident site in a short time after the message of derailment was flashed. They operated their special tools and cutters and rescued the passengers trapped in the coach, the spokesperson said. |
