Man shoots elder brother, maid

In a shocking double murder, a youth shot dead his elder brother allegedly over a land dispute at Kadian village, near Ladhowal, here today. A maid was also killed in the firing.

Debate continues on delayed general house
Ludhiana, August 31
While the Congress councillors feel the MC authorities have no “guts” to convene the general house, the ruling SAD-BJP combine councillors say unless the mayor takes decisions on time, the civic body working could not be improved. Many of them said by avoiding councillors, who were awaiting a general house meeting to express their anguish, things could not be sorted out. One day or the other, the authorities had to reply to their queries.

Old trainee booked for gym instructor’s murder
Ludhiana, August 31
The police have booked a resident of the Hambra road area for planning the killing of a 39-year-old gym trainer, who was bludgeoned to death by assailants near the gym located in the Rishi Nagar market late last evening. The victim was identified as Honey Sharma of Haibowal.

CMCH gives yoga dose to beat stress
Ludhiana, August 31
With the aim of keeping the staff fit and healthy, the cardio-vascular and thoracic surgery department of the Christian Medical College and Hospital has made it mandatory for all nurses to do yoga. The reason is simple. Just 15 minutes of yoga daily for one month has brought their stress level down by 50 per cent. This was revealed in a recently conducted study by the CMCH. Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Head, Cardio-Vascular and Thoracic Surgery Department, CMCH, said: “About two months ago, I, along with my student Shobhita and Dr Sandeep Goyal, psychiatrist, conducted a study on 24 nurses of our department.

Villagers, cops clash at Sunet
Ludhiana, August 31
Tension prevailed at Sunet village after PCR staff allegedly beat up youths of the village. It is learnt that the villagers also allegedly thrashed the policemen. The villagers staged a protest at the Orient Cinema market. The shops in the market were closed due to security reasons.

Fitness regimes favoured over gym to stay slim

Although the gym culture exploded at one time, and everybody seemingly wanted to go to gym to get into shape and pumping iron to build muscles through weight training. But with time, residents in the city have started to realise that fitness is not necessarily about building muscles but about feeling fit and energetic instead. Now more residents are choosing fitness regimes instead of weight training. Even gyms have added more regimes.

Women not always ‘bad drivers’
Former President APJ Abdul Kalam replies to a student’s question at Satya Bharti Adarsh Senior Secondary School, Sherpur Kalan, Ludhiana. There is a general “opinion” of a majority of the residents that women are “bad drivers”. Even if a woman is an expert driver, having an experience of over 15 years in this congested city, people feel that women are always responsible for traffic jams or banging their vehicles into others. A friend of mine was going through the narrow roads of the Mata Rani Chowk in her car.

300 girls take part in auditions

Auditions for Miss India Global International were held here today. Miss India Global International is a part of Miss Global International Beauty Pageant in Jamaica, North America. As many as 300 girls participated in the auditions. Girls from all over North India, especially Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Patiala, Delhi and Himachal, came for the auditions.

First passenger train to halt at Samrala today

It will be a dream come true for residents of Samrala and the adjoining areas when the first passenger train will halt at the Samrala railway station tomorrow. SSE Jasmel Singh said the first passenger train (5632) would depart from Ludhiana at 9 am and reach the Samrala railway station at 9.53 am. The train would stop here for two minutes and reach Chandigarh at 12.10 pm.

Experts deliberate upon symptoms of celiac disease

The second celiac awareness programme was held at Dumra Auditorium of the DMCH today. Secretary of the DMCH Managing Society Prem Kumar Gupta inaugurated the function by lighting the ceremonial lamp. The Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women (GNKC) beat the Khalsa College for Women 8-4 to clinch the title in the women’s section on the second day of the 9th Senior Ludhiana District Baseball Championship being held at the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujjarkhan Campus, Model Town. Ramgarhia Girls College, Miller Ganj, secured the third position.
