Day one: Violations rampant

A day after candidates for the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections was announced, different parties were seen flouting the code of conduct and the Lyngdoh Committee norms during canvassing.

16 more cases of diarrhoea in Panchkula
Panchkula, August 31
Sixteen more cases of diarrhoea were reported in Sector 19 Civil Dispensary, on the third day of the outbreak of this water-borne disease, raising the patient count to over 200. Two patients however, were referred to Government Hospital, Sector 6, after their heath worsened at the dispensary.

Man shoots at father over property dispute in Sec 36
Chandigarh, August 31
A retired Chief Engineer from the Punjab Mandikaran Board was shot twice by his 46-year-old son over a property dispute at his four-kanal house in Sector 36 today. The police said, 75-year-old Kesar Singh was shot on his shoulder and left leg by Harminder Singh after they had an argument over the property.

Fire breaks out at printing press
Chandigarh, August 31
A fire incident was reported at a printing press at Plot No. 44 in Industrial Area, Phase II, this morning leading to an estimated loss of around Rs 1 crore. The fire control room received a call at around 5.21 am following which three fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

UT to ban entry of diesel-run autos
Chandigarh, August 31
The Chandigarh Administration has decided to ban the entry of diesel-run autos in the city with effect from November 1. Auto operators from the neighouring states of Punjab and Haryana have been given option of converting to LPG fuel.

Deficient rain in city a blessing in disguise

Even as deficient rain this year left the city residents unhappy, it has brought a reason to cheer. Not a single confirmed case of dengue has been reported this year so far. The figure for the previous year stood at 109 while in 2012, 160 persons had tested positive for dengue.

MC to provide 15 acres for sports complex in Mani Majra
Chandigarh, August 31
The Municipal Corporation (MC) has decided to transfer around 15 acres in Mani Majra to the UT Sports Department for setting up a sports complex. The Director, Sports, UT, had written to the civic body requesting transfer of a suitable site in Mani Majra to set up a sports complex similar to those in Sectors 7, 42 and 46, and the Lake Sports Complex.

A little apathy cost a staff nurse dear at the PGIMER last week. As a patient approached her during lunch time for affixation of a stamp on his OPD card for further course of treatment, the nurse, without paying much heed to the person accompanying the patient, kept the request pending for over half an hour citing lunch break.

GMADA fails to meet deadline

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has failed to meet the deadline of its ambitious Rs 150 crore project of laying new Phase 5 and 6 pipeline of Kajauli Waterworks to pump additional 80 MGD (million gallon per day) water to Mohali.

Heart patient needs help
Chandigarh, August 31
A 65-year-old heart patient from Saharanpur, Mehboob, needs money for treatment. His son Aalam, a barber, is unable to meet the medical expenses. According to doctors in the PGIMER, Mehboob’s arteries are blocked and stent needs to be implanted to save his life. The cost of treatment is estimated at Rs 60,000. Parking chaos ranks high on parties’ agenda
Chandigarh, August 31
Frequent challaning of students’ vehicles parked outside college premises has turned out to be one of the major issues concerning all student organisations this time. The paucity of parking space on college campuses has been forcing students to park their vehicles along side the boundary wall and on main roads in all the three private colleges, leading to traffic chaos in the area.

Three persons, including a Panchkula-based advocate, have been booked for a fraudulent sale of a piece of land jointly owned by two residents of Chandigarh. As per the details available, Davinder Singh, the father of a judge in Chandigarh, and his brother Mohan Singh owned over six acres on the Gulabgarh road in Dera Bassi.

Authorities fail to check underage driving

Even after 12 days a minor crushed a school student to death under his car in Khatik Mohalla, the local administration seems to have not woken up from its slumber. Giving traffic rules a go-by, minors are driving four-wheelers and riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets.

Two robbers land in Crime Branch net
Chandigarh, August 31
The Crime Branch of the Chandigarh Police arrested two members of a gang of robbers at a naka near a rotary in Sector 11 while they were riding a stolen bike. The accused have been identified as Rajinder Kumar (24), alias Vishal, a resident of Sultanpur district in Uttar Pradesh, and Harbir Singh (40), alias Bunty, a resident of Saketri village in Panchkula.

4-yr-old boy strangled accidentally
Chandigarh, August 31
A four-and-a-half-year-old boy died after he was accidentally strangulated while he was playing at his house in Maloya. Gurmukh Singh, SHO, Sector 39 police station, said the victim, identified as Anshul, was playing on stairs of his house when a piece of cloth tied around his neck got stuck in the handle of a door resulting in strangulation.

Mohali, August 31
The Punjab Vigilance flying squad, Mohali, caught a mining officer posted at Ropar red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a contractor here. The accused, Harpreet Singh, was arrested on the complaint of the contractor, Balwinder Singh, aka Rittu.

Couple booked on rape charge
Mohali, August 31
The Mohali police booked a couple on charges of rape and criminal conspiracy here today. Ashu Garg and his wife Heena, both residents of Phase 3B1 here, have been booked under Sections 342, 376, 120B and 506 of the IPC for raping a 25-year-old girl, who stays on the upper floor in the same building as a tenant.

Mauli Jagran man held with illicit liquor
Chandigarh, August 31
The Chandigarh Police arrested a resident of Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, Chandigarh, from near the Airport light point and recovered 24 quarters of a country-made wine from his possession. A case under the Excise Act has been registered at the Industrial Area police station. The accused was later released on bail.
