Inter-state gang of vehicle thieves busted, five held
Dera Bassi, August 29 Led by Pramod Kumar, in charge of the CIA staff, a police party chased the car (CH-04K-7640) and managed to apprehend its occupants, including two women, on the Bhankharpur-Munarikpur road at Trivedi Camp. Eyewitnesses said the police personnel also opened fire in the air before intercepting the car. Pramod Kumar said the accused were identified as Vineet, a resident of Zirakpur, his wife Jyoti, his brother and brother-in-law. They were travelling in a stolen car. However, he refuted the charges of firing in the air. “It was the sound of a collision of their vehicle with that of the accused,” he said. The accused were members of an inter-state gang of vehicle thieves and were involved in a number of theft cases, Kumar said. “We had laid a trap and were chasing them from Saharanpur where they sold a stolen car. They are involved in a number of auto theft cases and had stolen 40-50 cars in the past,” he claimed. Police personnel from the Dera Bassi police station also reached the spot and took a stock of the situation. |
Charges framed against former DSP
Mohali, August 29 The police presented former DSP Gurbans Singh Bains and NK Goel in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Tarsem Mangla. The charges were framed under Sections 7, 13 (1) 88 and 13 (2) 88 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B of the IPC. The counsel for Bains said his client had been falsely implicated and was a victim of a political conspiracy. The next date of hearing was fixed as September 18. Gurbans Singh Bains, DSP (City I), Mohali, was arrested on March 27 on the charges of corruption and was dismissed from service. He had allegedly received a “hawala” consignment of Rs 40 lakh through his wife in Ludhiana. An unlicenced foreign-made revolver was also allegedly seized from his Patiala residence. Two cases - one at the Matour Police Station here and the other at Patiala - were registered against Bains. The police had also arrested Chandigarh-based NK Goel from whom Bain’s wife allegedly received the “hawala” consignment in Ludhiana. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B of the IPC was registered at the Matour Police Station. Another case was registered against Bains under the Arms Act in Patiala. |

Court acquits man of rape charge
Chandigarh, August 29 A case against Chetan Kalsi was registered in April last year on the complaint of a girl, a resident of Sector 41. The complainant stated that Chetan, who was her colleague and hailed from Kalka, raped her. Defence counsel Harsh Bhardawaj said during cross-examination, the victim admitted that she used to invite the accused to her place. Her WhatsApp and Facebook messages were also put before the court. Following this, the court acquitted Chetan Kalsi of the charge of rape. |

Self-styled godman, sister dupe couple of Rs 2.5 lakh, jewellery
Chandigarh, August 29 Khatun, a resident of Nainital, was arrested and produced in a local court. She has been remanded to two-day police custody. However, Mohammed is absconding. The police said Kuldeep Singh was not keeping well for a long time. Due to her husband’s prolonged illness, Darshna Devi came in touch with Khatun, who resided in their locality. The police said, Mohammed first enquired about valuables and then told the couple to divide Rs 2.50 lakh in the form of garlands of Rs 25,000 each. Then they were told to donate these garlands to half a dozen deities. Subsequently, Mohammed told the couple to go to the roof of the house as he was unable to catch the evil spirit trying to possess them. As soon as the couple went upstairs, the accused fled with all the valuables. |

4 held with stolen bikes
Chandigarh, August 29 The PCR and the Sector 31 police station acted promptly and detained three suspects, including Sagar (20), a resident of Phase I, Ram Darbar, Shubam and his namesake. On interrogation, they confessed to the crime and the stolen motorcycle was recovered. The accused have been arrested. Meanwhile, on a tip-off, the police arrested another auto-lifter, identified as Pardeep, from near Ram Darbar and a stolen Hero Honda Passion was recovered from his possession. |

Chandigarh, August 29 The day marks the birth anniversary of Indian hockey player Dhyan Chand. During the ceremony, medal winners of the 59th National School Games (2013-14) and position holders at the international level competitions (2013-14) were felicitated with cash awards. Players of various sports, including archery, baseball, badminton, boxing, wrestling, cricket, fencing, gymnastics, lawn tennis and tae kwon do were awarded during the ceremony. The special feature remained the felicitation ceremony of differently-able children of ‘SOREM’. The players were awarded cash awards for participating in the Special Olympics event held in Australia last year. Punjab log win in cricket
Chandigarh, August 29 In reply to Vidarbha’s total of 146 runs, Punjab declared their first innings at 324 for 7 in 58 overs on the second day. Skipper Anmolpreet Singh contributed 78 runs to the team’s total. He was equally supported by Sanveer Singh, who scored 53 runs, and Navneet Singh (42 runs). For Vidarbha, Atharv Deshpandey claimed 4 for 124. Vidarbha, in their 2nd innings, posted a healthy total of 132 runs for 1 in 55 overs at the end of the day’s play. Mohd Eklak scored an unbeaten knock of 62 runs while Varun Palandurkar scored unbeaten 54. Jagjeet Singh Sandhu was declared man of the match for claiming six wickets. In the second match, played at the cricket stadium in Sector 16, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) claimed three points on the virtue of the first innings lead against Baroda. Resuming at overnight score of 60 for 2, Baroda scored 246 runs in 80.4 overs. Akshay Brahm Bhatt (69 of 109) and Shlok Desai (69 of 123) were the main scorers for the side. For MPCA, Kuldeep Sen claimed 3 for 42 while B Badoria and Gaurav Patel claimed two wickets each. In their 2nd innings, MPCA scored 59 for 2 when stumps were drawn.
