A lasting impression
As this edition of the Lakme Fashion Week wraps up, we give you a ring-side view as what made a new entry on the ramp and what took a backseat. And, also who were better than the best this season.
Heavy with excitement "It is expected to be a heavy show," said a member of the organising team, which in fact was a way of telling us to squeeze in and accommodate more audience. So, we had almost twice the number of people sitting in the front row than usual. It was indeed a heavy show, one for the number of audience and two for the heavyweights from the glamour industry who marked their presence. The lengthy list boasted of Kajol, Priyanka Chopra, Karan Johar, Sri Devi, Boney Kapoor, Esha Gupta, Juhi Chawla, Karisma Kapoor, celebrity make-up artiste Micky Contractor and show-stopper Kareena Kapoor. With Manish Malhotra's show that's how it has always been! The grand finale indeed proved grand. It started 'fashionably' late (by two hours) and there was drama in abundance, which made the wait worth it. The stage lit to an elaborate arrangement of flowers and models sitting daintily on the set. Varun Dhawan opened the show in a very wintry beige coat and trouser, the only addition of colour was in the form of fuchsia pocket square. The collection comprised lehengas and gowns in raw silk, velvet and lace for women. For men, besides the beige-colour tone, it had dark rose coloured long coats. The ensembles in tie-and-dye of light and dark pink were certainly a novelty in Manish's collection, so were the lehengas with long trail. Even though the lehengas were plain, minus any embellishment, the trail lent the couture feel to the ensemble. As for embellishments, Manish extensively used mirror work this time, which added more bling than required. Complementing the colour palette was the rose motif, embroidered using sequins, thread and mirrors. Independent streak The models rolled out from the wings in silhouettes that boasted of a complex construction. Their signature drapes formed a major part of the collection by Shantanu Nikhil, but you could spot the novel elements in terms of skirt worn over a churidaar by a male model or a corset jacket paired with a ruffled skirt in tulle. For example, the show-stopper Jesse Radhawa's creation of a gown in Indian raw silk was reconstructed as applique work and embellished with French lace. The festive wear collection of a total of 39 ensembles comprised saree-gowns, pre-stitched sarees, cocktail gowns and in men's wear, they had kurtas, bandhgala jackets and with skirt churidaars. The designer-duo also introduced prints to the couture collection and that too for men. Another unusual element in the collection was that it had layers added to men's wear as well. The double-shaded sherwani was pleated as such that it created an illusion of a stole. The designers dedicated the collection in ivory, black, beige, rust colours to the women who are fiercely independent yet feminine. And, who better than Jesse can convey the message for the designers. Bikers on rampage The ramp was turned into a road for Arjun Khanna's show. With road delineators marking the boundary of the ramp, male models over-sped on the ramp, to draw a similarity with bike rallies. And, that was where Arjun picked the silhouette from for his collection. The entire collection had biker jackets, bundis, fitted pants and long boots. Arjun's biker models were also rock stars, so that made the blend interesting. Balancing act His was one of the best shows at the fashion week. Creations form his diffusion line was a fine balance between pret and couture, neither too high on bling, nor too staid. The treatment of silhouettes was very contemporary, with biker jackets paired with a range of bottom wear, but the embroideries picked to ornate the same were traditional. The collections boasted of crewel work and gotta woven to take shape of jackets and cropped tops. ashima@tribunemail.com

Beyond beauty
"'You don't look good. Cover your face!' I had to change that. I had to make the world not identify their face with sadness."
Rahul Saharan, a 24-year-old freelance photographer from Delhi, has been working with the NGO, Chaaon, for the past two-and-half years, but says his moment of reckoning came only on the fourth of August this year. The freelance fashion photographer conducted a photo shoot for five acid attack victims—Rupa, Ritu, Sonam, Laxmi and Chanchal—giving these girls a brand new shot at confidence. "These girls have been through what no one should, at any stage of life. My idea was to change the general perception of beauty in the eyes of the world. They had to move beyond the convention of beauty. I had been working with Chaaon for more than two years, and we had been in talks of doing this project early this month-since Rupa decided to launch her own line of clothing. So, on August 4, we took the onus of redefining beauty," says Rahul. Rahul traces his roots to Nukera (Punjab-Rajasthan border) and completed his schooling and college from Abohar, Punjab. His love for fashion photography made him move to Delhi five years ago. "What I've been doing so far is not half as satisfying as the hours I spent behind the lenses on that fateful Monday. It gives you faith in humanity to see these girls finally emerge from obligatory banishment. And, how Rupa decided to not let that one incident define her life is commendable," he adds. Rupa, an acid attack victim of 2008, says she revisited the idea innumerable times in her thoughts. "I was scared of my scars; of how people would react to my face if I came out in the open. But, I didn't want one unfortunate incident, which I had no control over, to dictate the rest of my life; I didn't want to spend a lifetime in the garb of depression," says Rupa. Bravely recalling the incident, she says, "It was my time to get married. My stepmom didn't like the idea very much. She wanted me to stay home and continue to do household chores instead. One night, in 2008, I was sleeping alone on the cot when she poured acid over me. My father sided with her; didn't take me to the hospital for four hours. That's when my uncle came to the rescue. After four agonising hours, I got medical attention." Soon after, Rupa disowned her father. She is now just Rupa. Launching Rupa Designs earlier this month was nothing short of a walk in the clouds for Rupa. Ask her how she has priced her designs and she says, "I don't bother with all that. I'm just happy seeing my designs come to life on my friends. I had always suppressed my desire to design. Now that I'm exploring my passion, I don't want to get distracted by money." Rupa Designs has already received three orders from the US for dresses and skirts. somya@tribunemail.com

Book in advance
The torturous weather cannot be reason enough to curtail dispersal of knowledge. Or so it seems at the first edition of Panjab University Book Fair 2014. Organised by AC Joshi Library, Panjab University, the five-day book fair features a total of 40 publishers from India and abroad, including Modern Publishers from Jalandhar, Karger Publishers from Switzerland (featuring books on human biology, amongst others), S Chand Publishers, Cambridge University Press and Ahmadia Muslim Jama from Delhi, which stood out amongst the rest for its collection of books on Islam and Muslim teachings. The fair also features a stall by the British Council, Chandigarh. Talking about the fair, deputy librarian, PU, Navjeet Kaur says, "This is the first time we are conducting the book fair at the university. We've been planning it for long and it's heartwarming to see it come to life, bustling with students and teachers. We do plan to make it a yearly feature now."
The fair was inaugurated by dean of the university, Professor AK Bhandari, which was followed by a brief discussion on the importance of book fairs in modern times by Dr HR Chopra, former chairman, Department of Library and Information Science, PU. During the course of the fair, many lectures and discussions will be held by renowned academicians at the venue. The afternoon of August 25 was marked by a lecture by Dr JS Thakur, Additional Professor, School of Public health, PGI, on Epidemic of Lifestyle Diseases: How We Can Prevent It. In the following days, lectures on blood, organ and eye donation would be held by reputed doctors to sensitise students about the impending need of organ donation in the country. Complying with the same, a blood donation van is going to be stationed outside the AC Joshi Library throughout the fair for volunteers. Talking about his meet-cute with the fair, Navjot Singh, a PGD student at the university, says, "Youngsters like us are always looking for such avenues to enhance our knowledge of the world. The fact that we have publishers from all over gives us access to fields we hadn't dreamt of exploring through our formal studies." For those planning to spend a fruitful day here, the fair also has food stalls by students of University Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism, besides another stall by international pizza chain, Dominos. The fair is on at the ground opposite AC Joshi Library, Panjab University, from 10 am to 7 pm, August 25 to 29. somya@tribunemail.com

Par Excellence Jesse Grewal Putting is a part of the game where the mind plays a huge role. The brain has two sides - the left which deals with logic, sequential thinking etc and the right side, which creates intuition, imagination, orientation in space and feel. The right side of the brain has a more important role in both short game and putting. Drills help in improving the performance of the right side of the brain. Practice can be divided into two methods - block and random. Block practice is putting a lot of balls in one place and making the same shot or putt. This is required when one is changing one's stroke or swing. Random practice is not hitting consecutive balls to the same target. Random practice is very important in putting. This is because every putt requires visualization before the stroke, which random practice creates. Speed drills - while doing speed drills let your mind only work on the aspect of distance control. Speed drills could be result-based or input-based. Place a shaft on the green across the line of the putt at approximately 10 yards. Putt to this shaft so that the ball rolls up to the shaft, touches it slowly and stops. The ball should not stop short of the shaft or roll over it. Place tee's on the green at 10', 20' 30' and 40'. Hit one putt to each of these distances starting from the shortest one. If you miss any of them start from the beginning again. Place a 7 iron across the front edge of the hole so that the shaft is touching the green. Putt from 10 feet over this shaft. If the ball is struck too hard it would fly over the hole and if hit too softly it would not go over the shaft. The perfectly struck putt would roll over the shaft and fall into the hole. Make a circle with markers of a 3' radius around the hole. Putt to this circle from 30'-40'. The above trains the mind to achieve the desired result. The other way is to work on the process. Mark the spot where the ball should be and place a tee behind the ball to restrict the back swing to the desired length. If the back swing length becomes consistent the ball should travel the same length provided the tempo remains constant. To improve tempo, move the putter slightly up and down behind the ball after addressing it, timing it to the words one-two. You have to say the words loudly. Then make the back and forward swing saying the words three-four. The time taken for each word should be the same. The two taps and the stroke should be timed to one-two-three-four. thumb It is important to understand the life cycle of insects in order to control them Satish Narula Why to discuss insects now at this time when the plants are putting forth new growth and getting a new lease of life? Well, this is the time for insects too to be active as feeders and breeders as plenty of food is around. It is nature. Be very vigilant and take proper measures to keep them at bay lest they should feed on your plants and you lose not only a season, but fruits of your hardwork. Insect pests came to this Earth much before we did. In fact, we invaded their world. But then it was evolution. Now we have a co-existence and they are there right from our bedroom, kitchen to the lawn outside. They may be present around in visible or invisible form. Whatever be the case, the crawling or flying creatures are annoying and irritating at times. There are friendly insects too, but for some an insect is an insect and has to be away from sight. Yes, they have to be out and away at a safe range. Mosquitoes, lice, housefly, ticks and roaches are known to cause some of the deadliest diseases. Others like beetles, butterflies, moths, bugs and hoppers devour plants, and finish the crops in no time. Not only this, insects like aphids, thrips etc are known to spread some deadly diseases in plants besides devitalising them. Insects like borer and butterfly larvae invade fruits and render them unfit for consumption. The insects are identified by their physical presence or the damage caused by them, which appear as symptoms. However, nature has given them powers to camouflage in one or the other form to escape our sight. They may live inside the fruit or tree, may change colour to merge with the surrounding environment, may hide in the crevices in the tree trunk, live on the underside of the leaves or even hide in the soil. They may also create artificial covering over their bodies to be out of direct vision. We may see the damage caused, but not the insects as they either withdraw to safety or are nocturnal in feeding. Nature has given them the power to live through tough times and also to multiply in comfortable numbers in no time. It is very important to understand the nature of their life cycle in order to control them. Studies have been made and a particular stage of development has been identified when these can be controlled effectively. But how to identify the attack of insects in plants and how to control them is a big question for the layman. (To be continued) (Narula is a Chandigarh-based horticulturist and landscapist) |

Depp is Ali’s inspiration
Ali Fazal has been hard at work preparing for his role for the seventh installment of the multi-million dollar franchise Fast and Furious 7. For a starling like him, acting opposite biggies such as Vin Diesel would be a daunting task.
Ali has been studying for his role in this upcoming movie by watching Johnny Depp films in marathon. Ali plays a maverick Arab in the movie and who better to guide him to polish his role than the person who played Willy Wonka and Captain Jack Sparrow as defining roles in his career? Ali is so inspired by Johnny Depp's characters that he has decided that his Arabian character in Fast and Furious 7 will have shades of Johnny Depp's characters in Tim Burton movies.
On a positive note
Hottie Milind Soman will be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani. Sanjay has cast the 48-year-old model-turned-actor in an important and positive role. He will train in Kalaripayattu (Indian martial art) as well.
Benevolent Priyanka

Special screening
Emraan Hashmi has a huge fan following among the masses, including rickshaw drivers. He will watch his upcoming movie, Raja Natwarlal, with them a week before the film releases. This is his way of showing his gratitude and appreciation to them.

Actress Nalini Negi, who is seen in television show Laut Aau Trisha, recently met the ultimate Khiladi of the Hindi film industry, Akshay Kumar, and was awestruck. The duo met at an event in Delhi where Akshay introduced Trisha. Says Nalini, "During my school and then college days, I used to follow Akshay Kumar's work. He is amazing. Look at his fitness and physique. He is nearing 50 and at this age he is the fittest actor in the industry. I liked his films like Namaste London, Waqt and Bhool Bhuliyaa. He is also someone who has done films in various genres, right from comedy to action to romance. I recently liked his film Holiday a lot." So, how was the meeting with the handsome hunk? "Don't ask me! I was too nervous to react in front of him. He was the one who called me on the stage and introduced me to the media. He blessed me and wished me luck. That means a lot for me. Given an opportunity, I would definitely want to work with him." Nalini regrets that she couldn't click a selfie with the actor. “It all happened so quickly that I missed the chance to click a selfie with him, but next time I will do that first.”
A long innings
Tina Dutta has been part of Uttaran since a long time now. She talks about rumours of the show going off air, being single and more.
Uttaran has been on for six years. What keeps you going? The positive energy and the environment, which is friendly; the show has become a part of my life. The producers and co-stars are very friendly, understanding and helpful. This keeps me going. When your storyline moves onto a different track with new people and you have to leave the other characters behind, who do you miss the most? When I become friends with new characters on the set, I really miss them a lot when I have to shoot without them. Like right now we are shooting with actors who play Pakistanis and none of the earlier characters are around, so I am missing them. And these new actors have become so friendly with me that I will miss them a lot after the story sequence gets over. Once again there are rumours of the serial going off air. How does that make you feel? I really feel bad when I get to hear these rumours. I am very much attached to the show as I have been part of it for six years. Are films on your agenda? No; not right now. Are you dating anyone? I am enjoying being single as I am very busy with my daily schedule. I wouldn't have time to spend with my date! I don't like anyone restricting my life. I like to live as a free bird. My ideal man should be loving, caring, understanding and good-looking. He should be well-to-do and not restrict my life. What are your views on love and marriage? Love is a beautiful feeling. Everyone should experience it once. Even I want to experience the feeling of love. Marriage is a bond of pure feelings between two people.
Boys will be boys!
Nude yoga guru Vivek Mishra and Sagram Singh, who were both part of last year's Bigg Boss, reconnected after ten months. It was their first meeting post Bigg Boss. Vivek says, "It was nostalgic for both of us. We spoke about Bigg Boss experience and life after it. It was fun meeting him. He was shooting in the city for his film Yuva, so we caught up over a cup of coffee in his hotel. My nephew also wanted to meet him. Sangram loves kids and vice-versa. We clicked a lot of selfies too."
Meeting the Almighty!
As many as 1.2 billion people pray to 330 million Gods everyday! Reason being, people generally thank or blame God for whatever happens in their lives. There is a perennial search for God. We have all wondered at one point or another...What will happen if we come face to face with God one day? What will we ask him? And one day, you actually meet God on earth. What if there are no miracles? What if God does not look the way you always imagined him to be? These are just some of the questions faced by Bhagwan Das, the protagonist of Zee TV's next weekend fiction show Neeli Chhatri Wale, who has the privilege of meeting and befriending God. This show has been produced by Ashwini Dhir, the director of successful comedy films such as Son of Sardar, Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge and One Two Three.
Noted for his critically acclaimed performances and serious roles across Hindi mainstream films, Yashpal Sharma plays the quintessential common man in Neeli Chhatri Wale. In a departure from his usual, dark brooding image, he will be seen as the much harried and hassled Bhagwan Das — a middle-aged, middle class man based out of Kanpur, constantly torn between his personal and professional life.
Of real substance
Pakistani television actor Adnan Siddiqui has appeared in many commercials and drama serials. He started his acting career in the 1990s and gained popularity through his drama Uroosa. Amongst his other notable dramas are Meri Zaat, Zara-e-Benishan, Doraha and Maat. Adnan has also been appreciated for his role in Angelina Jolie-starrer A Mighty Heart. In 2010, Siddique won Best Supporting Actor Award for Ishq Junoon Deewangi.
What was your reaction when you came to know that Zindagi channel was airing your shows in India? Honestly, I was not shocked or surprised. There was in fact a point to ponder on why Indian channels have been so late in acquiring Pakistani shows and content. Pakistani dramas have always been brilliant and India should be showcasing more of these. What according to you is the strength of Pakistani dramas? Pakistani dramas are extremely reality-based and you will find substance in them. They are like Indian art films, not at all commercial. We try to shoot our television shows in real locations and not on sets. How did you manage to attain such a huge fan following and stardom in Pakistan? In Pakistan, to be successful as an actor, one is required to impress three groups of people — school-going girls, college girls and housewives. If you manage to impress these three groups, you will become immensely popular in the entertainment circuit! Do you have any plans of collaborating with Indian filmmakers? Shaanu Sharma from YRF had once contacted me for a negative role in a film; but, the plan got cancelled. Do you think with the exchange of shows, the misconceptions people have about Pakistan will be cleared? Of course; it does bring a lot of change in what people perceive Pakistan as. When we meet Indians abroad in other countries, the warmth and the friendship we share makes me wonder whether there is enmity between the two countries.

The year ahead
If your birthday is August 26...
Virgo is ruled by Mercury and as portrayed in ancient Roman mythology, Mercury wasn't one to sit still for long. So your brain is in overdrive most of the time. You are able communicators and use mental acuity to maximum advantage. All of this brainpower can make you prone to skepticism and can even lead to the kind of over-think that surely leads to overkill. If you act prudently, you'll have excellent occasions for higher than usual income. Finally you will reap the fruits of your efforts. Don't worry if your loved one is annoying because he or she is simply doing it to attract your attention. Speculation will be hazardous - therefore all investments should be made with extreme care. Positive colours: Black, chocolate. Select days: Sunday, Tuesday. Favourable numbers: 1, 4, 8. Gems recommended: Blue Sapphire, Diamond. Charity on birthday: Donate oranges at a religious place.
You share your birthday with Neeru Bajwa (August 26, Vancouver), who was a runner-up in the Miss India Canada pageant. She has acted in many serials and Punjabi movies. Her prime number 8 makes her career very promising in Punjabi films.
