It appears that private buses are on a killing spree. An elderly woman became a victim of an overspeeding private bus near Jalandhar Bypass this morning. The deceased, identified as Simar Kaur (54), was a resident of Shimlapuri.

62 cops transferred

As many as 62 police officers, including 25 station house officers (SHOs), have been transferred following the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Pramod Ban. Rajanperminder has been made the in charge of the CIA staff. He has replaced Ashok Kumar who has been sent to the economic offences (EO) wing.

1,500 police personnel to be on guard
Mandi Ahmedgarh, August 25
The Ludhiana (rural) police have drafted a plan for the convenience, safety and security of devotees visiting Guga Mari Mandir during Chhapar Mela. More than 1,500 police personnel will be deployed to deal with any eventuality. It is learnt that the authorities have chalked out a strategy to thwart overcrowding and congestion.

Govt schools give sanitation a miss

Government schools in the district are forced to do without proper sanitation facility. Toilets on their premises are either a shambles or lack hygiene. Except a few schools, there is no proper arrangement for maintenance and cleanliness of toilets.

Hi-tech nursery to produce 50 lakh plants annually, says Bhagat
Ludhiana, August 25
A hi-tech nursery by the state government is coming up near Phillaur. It will provide 50 lakh plants annually. With the help of this initiative, there will be no need to buy plants from outside, rather the Forest Department will sell plants to the private nurseries.

PCCTU to observe Sept 5 as black day

“When 1,500 teachers and an equal number of non-teaching staff is without salary for the past 14 months, how can we celebrate Teachers’ Day? We can only observe black day and curse the existing government for their faulty policies and mismanagement, which has forced the nation builders to pass through such a state of penury where they can neither live nor die,” said Dr Kuldip Singh, president, Panjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU).

Ludhiana: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is all set to host annual group meet of All India Coordinated Research Project on Forage Crops on August 26 and 27. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, vice-chancellor, PAU, will be the chairman of the inaugural session. Dr Swapan K Datta, deputy director general (Crop Science), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, will deliver the inaugural address.

Ludhiana: Teej was celebrated at Green Grove School with full pomp and show in Punjabi fervour. To acquaint the students with Punjabi culture and traditions, all the students were dressed up in Punjabi attires. Punjab Sind Bank has appointed Manjit Singh Jaggi as the district manager in Lead Bank office in Ludhiana. He has been given special assignment of completing financial inclusion project of Ludhiana. In his previous tenure of two years, mega financial inclusion camps were conducted by him. In a single camp at Lohara village, 42,600 accounts were opened and 4,860 Aadhaar beneficiaries were enrolled.

Finally, there seems to be a ray of hope for the indoor stadium coming up on Pakhowal Road for the past 10 years. The stadium has been awaiting the second phase of construction that has been delayed due to paucity of funds.
