Labourer dies as JCB machine falls on him
Chandigarh, August 18
A 35-year-old labourer working at a construction site at Officers’ Mess, 12 Wings Air Force Station, died when a JCB machine fell over him. Another labourer sustained critical injuries.
The incident occurred when the labourers were working at the site where work of laying a lintel was under way.

Cong set for change of guard in city
Chandigarh, August 18
After the defeat of Congress candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal from the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the party high command is all set to change the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee
(CTCC) president. Sources in New Delhi said that the party high command had already taken consent of present CTCC president BB Behl in this regard.
When contacted, Behl said as soon as the party high command would ask him to resign from the post, he would do so immediately.
Fire safety: Recommendations not yet implemented

The UT has failed to implement the ‘19 recommendations on fire safety in Sector 17 buildings’ made by the committee constituted to inquire into the fire that broke out in the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) on June 8 last.

Five-day road safety event begins today
Chandigarh, August 18
The UT Transport Department is organising a five-day event on road safety and driving skills for 500 drivers of different categories beginning from tomorrow. During the event, drivers will be examined on psychometric assessment, including reaction time, vigilance, perception and other important aspects of driving. It will be organised by IDAC - The Training and Assessment Institute, Delhi, to address and identify the areas that cause maximum number of accidents. — TNS
Panchkula booth owners seek permission to construct first floor
Panchkula, August 18
Traders of different booth markets in the town have sought permission to construct a first floor or basements on their business establishments.
Accusing the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) for following different
set of rules in allotment of booths in different town markets, they claimed that
the booth allotees, in new sectors, were granted permission for basements while
the allottees of the booths in old markets were barred from the provision.

Green belt coming up on dumping yard

The local Municipal Corporation (MC) has started developing a green belt at the site of the town’s dumping yard in Sector 74.
MC Commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta said over 700 saplings have already been planted on piles of garbage after covering it with soil. “The work is being done as per the norms of the Management of Solid Waste Rules (MSWR) 2000.

A city-based doctor has come up with a new technique for diagnosis of uterine cancer within a few minutes. The ‘office hysteroscopy’ technology has been introduced in the tricity for the first time and is not available in any corporate or government set up till now. Chandigarh: Noted plant biologist of Panjab University Prof Harsh Nayyar has entered into a formal scientific collaboration with the International Centre for Agriculture Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA), Morocco.
