HMT employees without salary for 11 months

Pinjore, August 18
To lodge their resentment against the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries for the non-payment of their salaries for the past 11 months, employees of HMT, Pinjore, are on the warpath.

Nearly 1,700 employees of the HMT - machine tool unit and tractor division - have been struggling for their salaries and have launched a chain fast for the past 10 months.

The protesters have been demanding their due salaries and increase in the retirement age ie 60 years.

To lodge their protest, they have been holding a rally from 12pm till 12.30pm everyday while two employees are sitting on a fast on a rotational basis in front of the office.

Talking to The Tribune, Diwan Chand, president of the employees’ union, said the over 422 employees of the machine tool unit were not paid their salaries for the past 11 months while 1,250 employees of the tractor division were without salaries for the past four months.

The management had increased the retirement age of employees working with the tractor division to 60 years while those working with the machine tool unit were denied the benefit, he said.

Gurnam Sandhu, general secretary of the union, said the problem had also affected over 100 retired employees of the HMT who were not paid pension, some even  gratuities, after rendering 58 years of service  in the organisation.

The employees claimed to have taken up the issue with Ambala MP Rattan Lal Kataria, who assured them of an early solution to their demands.

Teenaged girl commits suicide

Barwala, August 18
A teenaged girl from Bhagwanpura village allegedly committed suicide following harassment by a youth of the same village last evening.

The girl reportedly consumed some poisonous substance in her house and was found unconscious in a room by her family members. She was rushed to Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where doctors declared her brought head.

Rajinder Singh, father of deceased Amarjit Kaur, alleged that four youths of the village had been harassing her by calling her up on the phone.

They four even came to their house, misbehaved with the girl in the presence of her younger brothers two days ago. They thrashed her brother when he objected to their act, he saidd.

Meanwhile, the body has been kept in the morgue of the hospital. The hospital authorities have informed the Panchkula police in this regard, an official at the hospital said.

Students vaccinated against Hepatitis B

Dera Bassi, August 18
Students and staff of the Sri Sukhmani Dental College and Hospital were vaccinated against Hepatitis B at a free camp organised on its premises by the college in collaboration with the Helping Hand foundation, Yamunanagar, today.

Prof Avtar Singh, chairman, Sri Sukhmani Group of Institutions, inaugurated the camp that was followed by a seminar on importance of vaccinations.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Avtar applauded the efforts of the foundation for their service to society.

He emphasised on the need for making vaccinations compulsory in educational institutes for every staff and student.

Chandigarh, August 18
Dinesh Kumar, the whistleblower in the infamous booth allotment scam, was injured when unidentified persons attacked him with rods and crude weapons in Sector 41, here.

The victim, who had played an important role in highlighting the irregularities in the sale and purchase of booths and illegal renting out of the booths, received injuries on his head, arms and lower body. He has been attacked twice in the last two years.

Though the persons accompanying the victim alleged that Dinesh had been targeted for siding the Sector-41 family that was targeted two days ago.

On the basis of the complaint, the police have registered a case under sections 323, 341, 506 and 34 of the IPC at the Sector 39 police station.

Youth held for raping minor

Mohali, August 18
The Kharar police today arrested a youngster for raping a 14-year-old girl after alluring her from her school, here.

The accused, identified as Gursewak Singh, had allured the victim, a student of Class IX and a resident of Sahora village, from her school on August 14.

A complaint in this regard was made by the victim’s mother at the Kharar Sadar station, following which the police recovered the victim.

The medical report of the victim confirmed rape following which the police registered a case against the accused under Sections 363, 366 and 376 (1) of the IPC and appropriate sections of the Protection of Child against Sexual Harassment.

Inspector Surjit Singh, Station House Officer of the police station, said the accused would be produced before the court tomorrow.

St Joseph’s School, Sector 44, Chandigarh, defeated Dharam Cricket Academy by 29 runs to win the Sant Nischal Challenge Cricket Tournament organised by Sant Nischal Public School, Yamunanagar, here today.

Subham Nayyer’s 44 off 28 balls and Amul Phondini’s spell of three for 18 led St Joseph’s School to victory. Subham was declared the man of the match.

Put to bat first, St Jospeh’s School posted 97 runs for five wickets in 20 overs. Middle order left-handed batsman Subham Nayyer scored 44 runs studded with three fours and as many sixes. He was equally supported by Divyansh Gumra, who hit an unbeaten knock of 27 runs.

In reply, Dharam Cricket Academy lost first three wickets at a mere total of 15 runs. The team was bowled out at 68 runs in 16 overs. Anuj bagga (20 runs) and Dhanajay (14 runs) were the only main scorers for the team. For the bowling side, Amul Phondini claimed three wickets for 18 while Dheeraj claimed two for 10.

Brief scores: St Joseph’s School: 97 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs (Subham Nayyer 44, Divyansh Gumra 27, Vivek Kumar 16, Anuj Bagga two wickets for 22 runs and Dhananjay two wickets for 16 runs). Earlier, in a rain-affected semi-final, St Joseph’s side defeated Sant Nischal Cricket Academy, Yamunanagar, by 15 runs. Electing to bat first, the St Joseph’s team scored 86 runs in the allotted 16 overs with Vivek Kumar scoring the major share of 20 runs. In reply, the Yamunanagar team could manage to score only 71 runs in the allotted slot.

Brief scores: St Joseph’s School: 86 runs for seven wickets in 16 overs (Vivek Kumar 20, Amul Phondini 14, Subham Nayyer 22, Subham Vashisth two wickets for 17 runs, Karan two for nine and Sahil one wicket for 15 runs. Sant Nischal Cricket Academy: 71 runs for nine wickets in 16 overs (Sahil 24, Aryan 16, Madhav 9, Subham Nayyer two wickets for 11 runs, Divyansh Gumra three for 17 and Anikat Rathour two wickets for 13 runs).

PCA announces selection, tournament committees

The executive committee of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) today met under the chairmanship of PCA president IS Bindra to discuss the list of sub-committees for the year 2014-2015.

The PCA also announced selection and tournament committees for men and women teams.

Members of the selection committee (Junior U-19 and U-16) are Patiala: Pankaj Dharmani (chairman); Chandigarh: RP Singh; Amritsar: Aman Randhev; Mohali: Kailash Chander; Jalandhar: Ajit Singh; and Ludhiana: Dinesh Puri.

The members of the selection committee for women are Chandigarh: Shaila Jain; Ludhiana: Anuradha; Patiala: Renu Kaura; Jalandhar: Gulshan Sharma; and Amritsar: Renu Margrata.

Those on women cricket committee are GS Walia (chairperson); Patiala: Renu Kaura; Amritsar: Madhu Arora; Ludhiana: Anita Gosain; Jalandhar: Balbir Kaur; Chandigarh: Jagjeet Kaur Bains; and Mohinder Singh (convenor).

Saket pedals to victory in 50-km race

Chandigarh, August 18
Saket Malhotra claimed the top spot in 50 km mass start race for men during Chandigarh Road Cycling Races organised by the Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association on the Dhanas lake circuit.

Saket of Gyandeep Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, won the title by completing the stretch in 1:10:14 hours while Jagwinder Singh of Chandigarh Cycling Club secured the second place after a wheel-to-wheel finish in the last sprint. Ashish Kadian of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, finished third at 1:26:08.

The championship was organised for boys and girls under juniors and seniors categories.

In the 20 km (junior boys) mass start race, Krishan Malhotra of Gyandeep Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, won the title by clocking 0:30:22 while Anuraag Sharma of Bhavan Vidalya Sector 27 finished second with 0:35:35 followed by Pranav Mohindra of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, with 0:38:51.

Hargunjeet Kaur of Ryan International School, Sector 49, claimed the top spot in 20 km mass start race (junior girls) with 0:40:33 followed by Aditi Mohindra of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, and Divleen Kaur of Ryan International School.

UT Futbol Campeonato from August 22

Chandigarh, August 18
The Vikings Football Club, Chandigarh, will hold the 2nd UT Futbol Campeonato from August 22 to 24 at the football stadium in Sector 17 here.

A total of 48 teams from across the Tricity and Punjab will take part in the competition. The winner will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 25,000 while the runner-up and the second runner-up will get Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively.

Organisers said the members of the top three winning teams will also be awarded official merchandise. The best players for each position in the tournament (defender, midfielder, forward and goalkeeper) will be awarded with a football, a kitbag and a jersey.

Teams interested in participating in the competition can confirm their entries before August 21.

5 table soccer players from city shine at sports fest

Five local table soccer players won awards in the 1st International Sports Festival held at Kathmandu (Nepal) from August 8 to 10.

Kiran, a student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, won gold medal in the girls (U-18) doubles event. She has also been selected for the table soccer international series championship to be held in Malaysia from November 27 to 30. Anupama of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, also won gold medal while pairing with Kiran in the girls (U-18) event.

Suchita of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, claimed gold medal in the girls (U-16) doubles event along with her partner Kiran Bhatt of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 8.

Nikhil of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, won gold medal in boys (U-14) singles event.
