UT Admn to honour 13 achievers

A supervisor in the Horticulture Department, who had been handling the Rose Festival and the Chrysanthemum Show for the last many years, and the officer-in-charge, Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children (GIMRC), Sector 31, who had been offering consistent service in the field of intellectual disability, are among 13 persons who will be awarded commendation certificates by the UT Administration during the Independence Day function at the Parade Ground in Sector 17 tomorrow.

Prohibited drugs: NCB grills private doctor
Chandigarh, August 14
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) grilled a city-based psychiatrist, Dr Ashwin Mohan, for more than eight hours for distributing buprenorphine tablets, a highly sensitive medicine, without any authority. A case in this regard has been registered.

Placement drive
Mohali: GGS Entrepreneur Cell of the GGS College of Modern Technology (GGSCMT) here conducted a placement drive for BTech students. As many as 35 students from GGSCMT cleared the aptitude test. Dr GS Virdi, director of GGS Entrepreneur Cell, said under this project, the students were encouraged to take up part-time jobs at the cell after completing their regular classes or during holidays.

Two booked for tampering with cheque
Chandigarh, August 14
The UT police have booked two persons for allegedly tampering with a cheque of a city- based person. The complainant, PN Khanna, a resident of Sector 7, has also mentioned names of senior bank officials in the complaint.

e-cigarettes seized
Chandigarh, August 14
A team of the UT Health Department raided a leading general store in Sector 17 and seized e-cigarettes on Wednesday. The nodal officer, Tobacco Control Programme, Chandigarh, Dr Deepak Bakshi, said, “The material has been sent to the CFSL, Chandigarh, for testing.”

Theft bid foiled at house in P’kula
Panchkula, August 14
In a broad daylight incident, a theft attempt was foiled at the residence of a BJP leader’s house in Sector 10 today when he had gone out to buy vegetables. When the victim, Meher Chand Thakur, returned, he saw thieves inside the home. He raised an alarm following which the thieves ran away. The neighbours also saw the two miscreants running away from the home. They appeared to be in the nine-14 age group.

Man found murdered
Kharar, August 14
A small-time shopkeeper was found lying murdered in front of his kiosk at Gadaga village here this morning. The victim, identified as Narayan Dass of Gadaga, was attacked with some sharp-edged weapons. Deep cuts and injury marks were visible on his face and abdomen.
