UPSC row: Govt move draws mixed response
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 4
On the Central government's latest move of not considering English scores while calculating qualifying candidates in Civil Services' prelims has received a mixed response from the political parties and student groups today.

While the NSUI "out rightly" rejected the Centre's latest decision calling it "eyewash", the ABVP said it is not enough even as it welcomed the move.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) too rejected the formula proposed by the Central government in Parliament.

Pointing out that the government is not talking about the translation part which was a major demand of the protestors, NSUI spokesperson Amrish Ranjan Pandey said, "The decision is nothing more than eyewash to the millions of students who have been relentlessly protesting against the CSAT. The CSAT issue was not just about English versus Hindi it was also about humanities versus science students. That issue remains unaddressed. Humanities students will be continued to be discriminated. Students who have studied regional languages are going to be at the receiving end. They are going to be treated as second class citizens."

ABVP Delhi secretary Saket Bahuguna said, "We welcome the government's initiative, but this is not enough. The government should rethink on its decision and take a call in the wider perspective."

Incriminating documents found in AIIMS attendant's locker
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 4
In a major revelation by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), many incriminating documents, including blank fitness and medical certificates having seals of senior resident doctors, were recovered from an attendant working at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

An enquiry into the matter has been initiated against the attendant, identified as Rajesh Kumar, by the authorities, a top AIIMS official said. A complaint had been submitted to the Chief Vigilance Officer by the AIIMS deputy chief security officer, dated July 27.

"Kumar is absconding and he has been suspended. An FIR against him will be lodged soon," the official added.

The matter came to the notice of the authorities when a reference was received from Dr R K Chadda, professor and acting head, Department of Psychiatry after the documents were found from Kumar's locker who was deployed as an attendant in the OPD of Psychiatry.

"He informed that the locker of Rajesh Kumar posted in Psychiatry was sealed on July 4 after he had been absenting himself from duty and the alleged recovery of forged medical certificates. The locker was opened on July 21 in the presence of duty officer, security officials and OPD staff," the complaint states.

"Having gone through the list of documents found in the locker of Kumar, there is every possibility that he was involved in making forged medical certificates and other illegal activities. Such act of Kumar, prima facie appears in violation of CCS (Conduct) Rules, 1964," the complaint adds.

The AIIMS Director has been informed and the Deputy Chief Security Officer, R S Rawat, asked to lodge an FIR with the police authorities for further investigation.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 4
Delhi Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs today prosecuted 33 agencies after irregularities were found during raids conducted at 53 premises all across the city, said Commissioner, Food and Supplies, S.S. Yadav.

Yadav said that the teams found irregularities like sale of underweight LPG cylinders, not carrying weighing machines with the delivery vehicle, use of uncertified weighing machines and non-display of verification certificate for the weighing machine.

"Besides, more than 350 premises were raided to check the sale of illegal small-size cylinders and use of domestic cylinders for commercial purpose. In total, 30 FIRs have been lodged against the culprits by the raiding teams and 60 illegal cylinders seized," he said.

The main areas where raids were conducted include Timarpur, Model Town, Burari, Azadpur, Tri Nagar, Narela, Bawana, Sultanpur, Badli, Mundka, Okhla, Lajpat Nagar, Garhi Gaon, Amar Colony, Ashram, Munikra (R K Puram), Andheriya More, Masudpur and Vasant Kunj,

"The department had received information that a number of premises in the city are engaged in the business of illegal filling of LPG from the bigger cylinders into the non-standardized small cylinders and selling of such LPG cylinders illegally," he said.

He said this is the third such drive taken up by the department in last two months. Earlier, similar drive was taken on June 5. In these drives, 1,000 premises have been raided so far, 800 cylinders seized and 95 FIRs lodged.

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order 2000, issued under the Essential Commodities Act, bans unauthorized possession, supply and consumption of LPG as well as unauthorized storage and transport of LPG. There is also a ban on the sale or distribution of LPG cylinders below or in excess of the standard weight.

"Filling LPG from big to small cylinders is very dangerous and may lead to explosions and fire accidents," Yadav added.
