Man drowns in Sirhind canal
Another woman attempts to commit suicide, jumps into canal, rescued by a passerby
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, June 21
A second incident of a person drowning in the Sirhind Canal in less than 48 hours was reported today in the morning after an elderly sadhu (saint) died while taking bath in the canal to beat the heat. The deceased has been identified as Shridhar Singh, a resident of Pacca Kalan.

As per the information, Shridhar Singh had come from Goniana along with some other friends. While they were on their way to the dera as per their normal routine, they reached the Sirhind canal. The sadhu told his associates that he wanted to take a bath in the river. As he went into the canal, he suddenly drowned.

After getting the information, volunteers of the NGO Sahara Welfare Society reached the spot and started the rescue operations. After nearly 30 minutes, his body was retrieved and taken to the Civil Hospital.

But to the surprise of the bystanders, a team from the Kotwali police station did not reach the spot. Even when the police was contacted in the evening, they claimed that they were not aware about any such incident in the Sirhind canal even though the body was taken out of the canal at 11 am in the morning.

It may be mentioned that on June 19, two children had drowned in Sirhind canal near Dhaliwala village. They had also gone to beat the heat by taking bath in the canal along with their friends. Ten days back, a couple had jumped into the canal and committed suicide.

In September last year, a 13-year-old boy had fallen into the canal while immersing the idols of Lord Ganesha in the Sirhind canal. People from the nearby areas accused the district administration of not adopting a proactive approach in summer by stopping people from taking bath in the canal. Every year, some incident or the other takes place. It is pertinent to mention that another woman also jumped into the canal to commit suicide but was rescued by a passerby. The victim was identified as Neetu Bansal, a resident of Court Road in the city.

Sources said she attempted to end her life due to some family problem.

Sukhbir Badal told to cut short VVIP visits

Bathinda, June 21
In a meeting recently held between Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal with the leaders of the SAD unit of Bathinda over the debacle in the Lok Sabha election, the party has told the Deputy Chief Minister to reduce the VVIP movement in the city.

A senior leader of the SAD claimed that they have told the party high command to cut short the VVIP visits to the city as this has been one of the issues which has gone against the party in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

People have got fed up as all the administration and police officials remain busy with VVIP duties and people visiting the officials have to wait for long to get their work done or sometimes even had to return empty-handed without meeting the officials.

SAD leaders also stated that some time people even queued up with their documents to directly meet Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Member of Parliament Harsimrat Kaur Badal at the venue where they had to arrive to share their grievances and get their work done directly but they are not allowed to meet them by their security personnel or due to security reasons. Then they get annoyed and it affects the party’s poll performance.

It is pertinent to mention here that now the Badal will not be seen roaming much in the city.

Senior police officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said if VVIP movement in the city is cut short, then it would be of great relief for them. During their movement, they (the police) have to deploy all the force and routine work at police stations suffers and people get harassed waiting for them.

Bathinda Urban MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) Sarup Chand Singla also admitted that they have made the party high command aware of the movement of the VVIPs in the city and that it had affected the party’s performance in the Lok Sabha poll. “We have told them not to visit frequently as it creates trouble for the common man,” he said.

City residents unhappy over hike in railway fare

Bathinda, June 21
The Centre’s recent decision to hike railway fare doesn’t seem to have gone down well with the residents as they have demanded the immediate rollback of the decision. The revised fares would be effective from June 25.

Madan Mohan Behl, convener, Joint Action Committee, Bathinda, expressed his grave concern over the increase in rail fare by 14.02 per cent and freight charges by 6.05 per cent. He said it would affect inflation and escalate the prices of all commodities. The condition of the common man will become miserable. He said that his organisation strongly condemns and demanded a rollback.

Bathinda Chambers of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) president, Raman Watts, said it was unfortunate that the rail fares have been increased. The industry will be hit hard with the hike in freight charges as profits are already due to competition and recession. It will surely put more burden on the industry, he said, and demanded that the hike be rolled back immediately.

Rajesh Kumar, a resident, said people have voted Modi to power with full majority with the hope that he will bring down inflation but by seeing his policies, it seems that there is no one who cares for common man. All that they do is make tall promises during the elections but after being elected, they become indifferent to the common man.

“A train is the preferred way of commuting for the common man. By increasing the rail fare by 14 per cent, the Modi government has shown its anti-people face as the hike would affect the common man hard, said Ishita, a student.

Another resident, Jarnail Singh said the fare hike would take inflation further up as there are many products which are transported through trains. “So we can’t hope that inflation will go down with the steps this government is taking. We were expecting that the new government would take steps to control inflation, but it seems they are least interested,” he said.

Harminder Singh Jassi, general secretary, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, said the recent hike in rail fare has exposed the false claims of the Modi government that the good days are coming.

He said it is condemnable that before the hike has been announced before the rail budget and will directly affect the common man. With this, travelling in train will also become impossible for the common man. They should take back this decision, Jassi said.

Bathinda, June 21
With the turmoil in Iraq, three more families of Punjabi youths who are stranded in Iraq today surfaced in Bathinda. The families were approached by the senior officials of the district administration. The government officials have provided them with cell phones along with SIM cards and assured every possible help.

These families are from Dhipali, Sidhana and Maadi Mehraj villages of Rampura. The youth have been identified as Karam Singh Dhapali, Pinder Singh from Sidhana and Gagandeep Singh from Maadi Mehraj.

The officials said they visited the affected families and as per the promise made by the Chief Minister of Punjab, all possible help would be provided to them. Apart from providing cell phones, the officials have also conveyed the feelings of these families to the senior officials.

The families demanding intervention said their children went to Iraq in search of greener pastures but now they want them to come back immediately in view of the disorder prevailing in that country.

“We raised the issue of our children today. Earlier, we thought he was in a safe zone in Baghdad. But now, the situation is worsening. So, we called up the helpline numbers issued by the district administration,” said Bhinder Singh, the uncle of a stranded youth in Baghdad.

Bhinder is deployed with the Indian Army as Subedar Major and is presently on leave to help his nephew who is stranded in Iraq.

“Though we are in constant touch with the 24-year-old Pinder Singh over the phone, he is not feeling safe and is repeatedly asking us to get him out from there,” the uncle said. He regretted that the company that hired his nephew did not allow him to leave the country. "But neither we nor is our nephew satisfied with the responsibility of the company and we want him back as soon as possible," he said.

He pointed out that Pinder works with a construction company and was assigned the task of joining the iron scaffolding in the under-constructed buildings. Pinder left for Iraq two years ago and visited Bathinda for the last time in December 2013.

ADC Sonali Giri and the SDM, Rampura, visited the homes of the families of all the three youngsters today.

Man, 60, commits suicide after 58-yr-old wife elopes with youth

Bathinda, June 21
A sixty-year-old retired bank cashier ended his life by consuming poison after his fifty-eight-year-old wife and the mother of their two married children eloped with a 30-year-old man. The incident took place late on Friday evening.

The man, Hardev Singh of Bathinda, is survived by his two sons, both of them working as a security guard at a local government engineering college, but the retired bank cashier was disheartened after his wife left him.

In her late fifties, the woman Jasveer Kaur, now accused of abetment to suicide, fell in love with Gurjant Singh of Talwandi Sabo, who was in his late twenties. According to the police and the family, the woman got in touch with Gurjant Singh when she continued to visit the in-laws of her adopted daughter. The in-laws had allegedly killed her daughter a few years ago and Gurjant had promised Jasveer Kaur of revenge for her death.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Gurmel Singh, who is the investigating officer in the case, said, “Hardev was disheartened for over a year after his wife eloped with a man known to the family. He was depressed and used to talk less with his family members. His wife was almost the same age as Hardev but she eloped with a 30-year-old leaving behind her two sons and family. We have registered a case under section 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) while further investigation is on. The body was handed over to the family after the autopsy. They performed the last rites of Hardev.”

“We investigated from many angles, including the economic condition of the family, but no such angle was commensurate with the circumstances and conditions of the family. Both the sons of Hardev Singh had claimed that their father was depressed after their mother eloped with someone who was her son’s age. This reportedly drove Hardev to commit suicide. On the basis of a complaint filed by Hardev’s son, Dilmohan Singh of Bathinda, a case has been registered against the accused Gurjant Singh Kaka and the woman Jasveer Kaur. We are investigating the case and the accused will be arrested soon,” he added.

Bathinda, June 21
The official vehicle of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) today hit a youth riding a motorcycle near Nehianwala village injuring him seriously. The victim has been identified as Ram Kumar, a migrant labourer, who was returning home after working at a brick kiln.

He was hit by the DSP’s official vehicle that was travelling at high speed. The vehicle was a Mahindra Bolero. The DSP was returning to the Nehianwala police station after performing VVIP duty during the visit of Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal at Laverisar Gurudwara, near Bhucho.

Charanjeet Singh, the owner of the brick kiln, said the victim used to work at various brick kilns simultaneously. He had been coordinating with the brick kiln owners and labourers to carry out various tasks at the brick kilns. He tried to reach the main road from a slip road when the accident occurred.

“I rushed to help him immediately after the accident. Initially, we admitted him to the Civil Hospital, Bathinda, but as it lacks proper facilities, we shifted him to a private hospital situated on Bibiwala Road,” Charanjit Singh said.

SHO, Nehianwala, Gurkirat Singh said the matter has been brought to the notice of senior policemen. But action is yet to be initiated, he said.

“We have sent an investigating officer to the private hospital for recording the statement after which action will be initiated,” said the SHO. He pointed out that the DSP’s vehicle was not a part of Harsimrat’s cavalcade and the officer was on way to the Nehianwala police station after performing VVIP duty at Gurudwara Laveri Sar. MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal paid obeisance at the gurudwara as part of her thanksgiving visit.

Ram Kumar, hit by the DSP’s vehicle, suffered fracture in legs besides injuries in his ribs and head. His colleagues said Ram Kumar may undergo further surgeries and is likely to be shifted to some other higher medical institute for treatment.

The office of the motor transport department of the police is housed in a dilapidated building inside the Police Lines. The police personnel said the ceiling of the building was in a shambles and could collapse anytime.

“The office was established inside this building about eight years ago. The senior functionaries of the department promised to construct a new office building at the earliest. However, the assurance proved to be a hoax,” said the police personnel.

During the rainy season, the leakage from the ceiling disrupts the official work.

“Many a time, we have raised the issue with the seniors concerned, but nothing has been done so far,” the police personnel added.

In charge of the department, Avtar Singh, while talking to Bathinda Tribune, stated that this place was a mess earlier, but eight years ago it was converted into an office.

The officials of the police department said they had sent a proposal to the authorities concerned and were waiting for funds. They would start the repair work after approval by the authorities concerned.

The cloudy weather and the light drizzle brought down the temperature in the city, despite the fact that the sun played hide and seek throughout the day.

If the weather forecast is to be believed, the region is set to experience a similar pleasant weather for at least two more days. As per the predictions, the region may receive light showers and experience a cloud cover over the next two days as well.

Commuters were taken by surprise as it started drizzling suddenly after the sun shone late at noon. Although the drizzle stopped by 4 pm, the weather remained pleasant after that as well.

Weather experts have forecast that after a short spell of pleasant weather, the sun will be back and will beat down hard till the end of June when the monsoon traditionally sets in the region.
