Suicide by Dy Director (Vocational), education dept
Cops caught napping yet again

Chandigarh, June 4
Vinod Kumar The suicide by Deputy Director (Vocational) of the Punjab Education Department Vinod Kumar at Sukhna Lake in broad daylight yesterday lays bare the tall claims of the UT police of extensive patrolling in the area. The officer jumped into the lake at 11 am yesterday after climbing stairs No. 4 on the Golf Club side. This is the second case of suicide at the lake in the past and the incidents expose shoddy police presence at the city’s favourite hot spot, which has also been time and again tagged as the suicide point.

Excise Dept, manufacturers fail to agree on liquor prices
Chandigarh, June 4
Four days after the new excise policy for 2013-2014 came in force, the UT Excise and Taxation Department is finding it hard to “rope in” liquor manufacturers to bring down the ex-distillery price (EDP) of different brands of liquor.

Pollution taking a toll on city’s health
Chandigarh, June 4
With the number of vehicles plying on city roads consistently on the rise, the level of pollutants is also increasing. Taking a toll on the health of residents, the increased vehicular density, causing frequent traffic jams and concentration of air pollutants, has not allowed the respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM) levels to move down to normalcy in the past five years. Over nine lakh vehicles are registered with the Registering and Licensing Authority, Chandigarh.

2 challaned for smoking on court complex
Chandigarh, June 4
Found smoking in the District Courts by a Judge, two youths were today challaned for smoking at a public place. The Judge immediately summoned the police to issue a challan to the two who were found smoking in toilets at the District Courts. They were issued a challan of Rs 200 each as per the rules.

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery
Panchkula, June 4
Thieves struck at a flat in Rail Vihar, Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 4, Panchkula, and decamped with cash and jewellery worth 1.70 lakh in the wee hours yesterday. Interestingly, they locked the house of a neighbour of the victim family before committing the crime. The owner of the flat, VAK Mahajan, former deputy manager with a bank, was out with his family to Amritsar when the incident took place.

Man stabs wife to death
Chandigarh, June 4
A woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband at their residence in Mauli Jagran this evening. The victim, identified as Rita, was taken to the PGI, where she succumbed to her injuries. — TNS

Biker killed
Chandigarh, June 4 A youth died after his motorcycle hit the divider on the Sector 18/21 road before colliding with a Chandigarh Police bus that was coming from the opposite direction on the other side of the road late tonight.

No paediatrician at Civil Hospital

The Civil Hospital, Phase 6, Mohali, is functioning without a paediatrician and parents of children are having tough time. The hospital, which used to have two paediatricians, is being run without any child specialist for around past one month.

Against the 87 million gallons per day (MGD) water available to the city per day from all sources, the demand goes up to 116 MGD during the peak summer months.

GMADA to impose 12.36% tax on various services

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) will be levying service tax at the rate of 12.36 per cent on various services. According to sources, service tax has been imposed by the Central Government under Section 66 B of the Finance Act, 1994, as amended from time to time, on various services.

P’kula gets new DCP

Y Puran Kumar will replace Ashwin Shenvi as Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). Puran is a 2001-batch IPS officer and was posted as Superintendent of Police (SP), Kurukshetra. The orders for his new posting were issued this evening. Shenvi has been shifted to Kurukshetra to take Puran’s place.

Special classes for summative assessments
Govt schools fail to comply with orders
Chandigarh, June 4
Despite the Education Department’s written instructions that students of Class IX who had failed to qualify for the summative assessments (SA) should be given guidance classes for their improvement examination, which is to be held in July, majority of the government schools have failed to comply with the orders as no extra classes are being held.

Form submission: Admn to launch helpline numbers

To avoid inconvenience to undergraduate students in the online form submission process, the UT Administration is going to launch a helpline number for each of the five government colleges of the city.

PU issues revised guidelines
Chandigarh, June 4
Panjab University has issued revised guidelines for awarding the PhD degree. PU spokesman said the admission to the PhD programme was being given through an entrance test. In order to promote teachers to undertake the PhD programme, the approved permanent teachers (regular for government colleges) of the PU and colleges affiliated with it with two years experience would be exempted from the entrance test for admission to the PhD course.

The Mohali Police claimed to have solved a murder case of Harjinder Singh, a resident of Sohana village, by arresting one person, Parveen Kumar, a resident of Chamatha village in Bihar. His accomplice Sonu Pandey is yet to be nabbed.

Three accused in a case attacked two cops and torn off their uniforms, when the cops tried to stop them from escaping at Kharar. On the complaint of head constable Kesar Singh, a case has been registered against Parminder Singh and his two sons, Malkit Singh and Gurdip Singh, under Sections 353, 186, 224, 225 and 34 of the IPC at Kharar Police Station.

Karanveer Singh, a player of Kings XI Punjab, along with his wife Tanvi, addresses a press conefrence at a hotel in Sector 34, Chandigarh, on Wednesday. Calling it a successful season, 26- year-old leg break googly bowler Karanveer Singh, shared his experience of playing in his first ever IPL (Indian Premier League) tournament. IPL’s star opener for Kings XI Punjab Manan Vohra and his former teammate of 2012 World Cup (U-19) winning squad Prashant Chopra, have been called to attend the probable’s camp for Indian U-23 cricket team, to be held in Bangalore for over a period of one month. CCA declare probables’ list for women

BECC, DCF to clash in final

The semifinal matches of 13th Hot weather cricket tournament were played today at BECC grounds. In the first match Black Elephant Cricket Club, Patiala, defeated DMWCC by a whopping margin of 220 runs. Chasing the BECC’s target of 280, DMWCC lost their wickets at regular intervals and ultimately bundled out after scoring 60 runs. Once again, Ibadat played an impressive inning of 143 runs.
