Pollution taking a toll on city’s health
Chandigarh, June 4
With the number of vehicles plying on city roads consistently on the rise, the level of pollutants is also increasing. Taking a toll on the health of residents, the increased vehicular density, causing frequent traffic jams and concentration of air pollutants, has not allowed the respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM) levels to move down to normalcy in the past five years. Over nine lakh vehicles are registered with the Registering and Licensing Authority, Chandigarh.
2 challaned for smoking on court complex
Chandigarh, June 4
Found smoking in the District Courts by a Judge, two youths were today challaned for smoking at a public place. The Judge immediately summoned the police to issue a challan to the two who were found smoking in toilets at the District Courts. They were issued a challan of Rs 200 each as per the rules.

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery

Thieves struck at a flat in Rail Vihar, Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 4,
Panchkula, and decamped with cash and jewellery worth 1.70 lakh in the wee hours yesterday. Interestingly, they locked the house of a neighbour of the victim family before committing the crime. The owner of the flat, VAK
Mahajan, former deputy manager with a bank, was out with his family to Amritsar when the incident took place.
Man stabs wife to death
Chandigarh, June 4
A woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband at their residence in Mauli Jagran this evening.

Biker killed

A youth died after his motorcycle hit the divider on the Sector 18/21 road before colliding with a Chandigarh Police bus that was coming from the opposite direction on the other side of the road late tonight.
No paediatrician at Civil Hospital
Mohali, June 4
The Civil Hospital, Phase 6, Mohali, is functioning without a paediatrician and parents of children are having tough time.
The hospital, which used to have two paediatricians, is being run without any child specialist for around past one month.

GMADA to impose 12.36% tax on various services

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) will be levying service tax at the rate of 12.36 per cent on various services.
According to sources, service tax has been imposed by the Central Government under Section 66 B of the Finance Act, 1994, as amended from time to time, on various services.

Govt schools fail to comply with orders

Despite the Education Department’s written instructions that students of Class IX who had failed to qualify for the summative assessments (SA) should be given guidance classes for their improvement examination, which is to be held in July, majority of the government schools have failed to comply with the orders as no extra classes are being held.
Form submission: Admn to launch helpline numbers

To avoid inconvenience to undergraduate students in the online form submission process, the UT Administration is going to launch a helpline number for each of the five government colleges of the city.

PU issues revised guidelines
Chandigarh, June 4
Panjab University has issued revised guidelines for awarding the PhD degree.
PU spokesman said the admission to the PhD programme was being given through an entrance test. In order to promote teachers to undertake the PhD programme, the approved permanent teachers (regular for government colleges) of the PU and colleges affiliated with it with two years experience would be exempted from the entrance test for admission to the PhD course.
