Ambala, May 28 Students of MDAV Public School Tanvi got 97 per cent marks in non-medical while Pallavi secured 96.4 per cent marks in Commerce and Rashmeet got 96.2 per cent marks in medical stream. Congress leader acquitted in hate speech case
Chandigarh, May 28 As per the case, during a rally, comprising population of a particular community, held opposite the Jama Masjid in Sector 20 here on March 15, 2009, Kidwai had indulged in the hate speech. He said some people of the community still voted for the BJP seeking personal benefits. Party general secretary Mohsina Kidwai was also present at the rally. “If I were a cleric, the only fatwa I would issue would be that to vote for the BJP is like committing a sin,” he had stated in the speech then. The BJP had sent a complaint to the Election Commission stating that the speech was in violation of the code of conduct and could fuel communal hatred. UT Chief Electoral Officer Pradip Mehra had sent a report to the EC, along with a CD containing Kidwai’s speech. Following this, a case was registered on the recommendation of the EC. The defence counsel had stated that the case against Kidwai was not made out and Section 25 of the Representation Act applied only in cases where one’s act or speech created hatred among communities, which was not the case. The case fell flat in the court after two employees of the Estate Office, who were on duty at the ground where the speech was made, denied their presence inside the ‘pandal’. Accused woman acquitted

Chandigarh, May 28 The court acquitted Geeta Narwal on the charges of corruption. It was alleged that she offered a sum of Rs 50,000 to the then STA secretary, Vandana Disodia, for the job of a clerk. She was employed as a data entry operator on contract-basis when she had offered the bribe. The STA secretary had then submitted a complaint to the Sector 19 police station following which Geeta was booked. As per the prosecution, the accused had twice entered the office of the secretary and offered her bribe. However, the charge could not be proved in court following which Geeta was acquitted. |

20-yr-old girl commits suicide
Chandigarh, May 28 The deceased has been identified as Kalawati, alias Kirti. Before jumping into the lake, the girl had sent a text message to her colleague yesterday night in which she had stated that she wanted to end her life. After that, she switched off her cellphone. Kirti was working as a call centre executive at Sector 26 here. She did not return home since Tuesday. Her parents were looking for their daughter till late night. The incident came to light when a morning walker noticed her body floating in the lake. He informed the local police about the incident. The police reached the spot and took the body to the General Hospital, Sector 16, in Chandigarh where doctors declared her brought dead. A team of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) also reached the spot and collected samples. No suicide note was found from the spot. The girl was identified with the help of identity proof of her office. Kirti’s father, who works at the Haryana Secretariat, told the police that Kirti had left the home on Tuesday night for office. When she did not return home at night, her parents lodged a complaint with the police. A search operation was launched. The police scrutinsed the message sent from her cellphone. They also rounded up her colleagues for questioning. However, the reason behind taking such an extreme step could not be ascertained, the police said. |

Proclaimed offender held
Chandigarh, May 28 The police said the accused, Mohammad Mahaquil, a resident of Kajheri village, was arrested from his native place at Saharsa in Bihar. Mahaquil was earlier arrested by the Mohali Police in a rape and murder case. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment by the district court in Mohali then. Mohaquil was released on parole in 1993 by the court, but he did not return. The UT Police had registered a case against Mohaquil at the Sector 36 police station for jumping parole. The accused had been absconding since 1993. Several raids were conducted to arrest him. A team was again sent to Bihar to arrest him and he was brought back to Chandigarh on Tuesday. Meanwhile, he has been sent to judicial custody on Wednesday and further investigations are on. |

Three booked for culpable homicide
Mohali, May 28 The police have registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC against the accused - Talwinder Singh from Kharar, and Harjinder Singh and his wife Sandeep Kaur, both residents of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. According to the police, the trio had administered an injection of synthetic drug to the victim, Tanveer Ahmed (26), who died yesterday at a hospital in Mohali. Tanveer, who is said to be a drug addict, was an agent in the Kharar vegetable market. In his complaint to the police, Parvez Mohammad, father of the victim, alleged that Talwinder took his son to some place on May 19. He (Talwinder), along with Harjinder Singh and his wife Sandeep Kaur, forcibly administered the drug injection to Tanveer. When his condition deteriorated, they shifted him to a private hospital in Mohali and fled,” said Parvez Mohammad. |

Youth booked for demanding dowry
Chandigarh, May 28 The 16-year-old girl was staying with Dharminder for the past two years at Bapu Dham Colony. They also have a 10-month-old baby girl. The victim had given birth to the girl child when she was just 15-year-old. The minor girl gave a formal complaint that she was being harassed by Dharminder and her parents for dowry. The minor girl was turned out by her parents and had no place to live. The matter was referred to the Social Welfare Department, Chandigarh, who sent the teenager along with her 10-month-old baby to Mother Teresa Home in Sector 23, here. Dharminder and the girl had met about two years ago. At that time, Dharminder was 16 and the girl was 14. They had met through a common friend. The girl was studying at a government school, while the boy was studying at a private school. The girl left her home and started staying with Dharminder at his house at Bapu Dham Colony. |

Another self-styled godman lands in police net
Panchkula, May 28 The alleged accused, Sanjay, who was arrested with his accomplice Tinku (20) had become a saint eight years ago, after he was wanted in many robbery cases in Haryana.
Styled in saffron clothes, Sanjay was picked up from Rishikesh in Haridwar by a team of the Crime Investigating Agency (CIA) in the wee hours today. Sanjay had provided the pistol for the murder. He is the real brother of Saroj Hooda. With the arrest of two more persons, all the alleged accused stand arrested. “Already a wanted criminal and proclaimed offender of the Rohtak police, Ajay alias Ajju has already been arrested by the police. He was hiding as a self-stled godman in Haridwar. He murdered Manjit, a local resident, thereafter he came to know that the person had illicit relations with his friend’s wife,” said a police official. The police have also recovered the pistol and seven cartridges from the accused. A youth leader of the Panchkula unit of the BJP was shot dead while his younger brother and father were injured seriously when a group of youths, equipped with firearms and sharp weapons, attacked the family at their residence in Manav Colony near Saketri village on Sunday night. Ashutosh Bhardwaj (25) and his younger brother Rahul Bhardwaj (23) were asleep in a room on the first floor when the armed assailants entered the house after scaling the boundary wall. The assailants entered the room and one of them fired a gunshot on the right side of Ashutosh’s chest while the others attacked both the brothers with sharp-edged weapons, leaving them with serious injuries. |

Earlier, in the quarter-finals matches, Sanyam Madaan defeated Ajit 5-0 whereas Kshitij Joshi overpowered Chaitanya Bansal 5-1. In the semi-final of (U-12) girls’ category played today, Sohani Makkar defeated Bani 6-1. 2 local karatekas win bronze medals

Aditya Singh of Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, won a bronze medal in the +50 kg category. He won the medal in the individual kumite event and also claimed a bronze in team category of the same event. Other local representative, Anupam Singh of Saupin’s School, Sector 32, won a bronze medal in the below 25 kg weight category in the individual kumite event. He also attainted another bronze in the team kumite event in the sub-junior category. Ashwani Kumar, local member of Chandigarh Karate Association, was the referee in the above said tournament. Chandigarh, May 28 In boys (U-16), unseeded Sumit Pal defeated Ponaka Sai Pranav of Karnataka in a long three setter match 6-3, 6-7(4) and 7-5. In his pre-quarterfinal, Sumit Pal upset seventh seed Anurag Nenwani, again in a closely contested three setter tie 4-6, 7-5 and 6-3. On other hand, in the girls (U-16), 13-year-old unseeded Prinkle Singh upset 10th seed Ravi Rishika of Taml Nadu in a long tallied match that ended in Prinkel’s favour 4-6, 6-3 and 6-3 whereas in her previous tie, she had upset 5th seed Aarushi Kakkar 6-7 (2), 6-4 and 6-1. According to Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association’s officials, both of them are unseeded in the tournament and have put up good performance in the U-16 national tournament. |
