Optimistic BJP is banking on good turnout of voters
Dehradun, May 6 After the campaigning din came to a grinding halt yesterday, the Uttarakhand BJP shifted focus on booth management, spreading its party workers and office bearers in all the five parliamentary constituencies. While there is a straight fight between the BJP and Congress on all the five seats, the BJP is relying on the so-called Modi wave to improve its fortunes in the urban centres of the five parliamentary constituencies. The BJP strategists say that a good voter turnout in the urban centres would automatically go in favour of the BJP. ''We are eyeing at the first time voters in the age group of 18-19 years who make a sizeable population. Our prime ministerial
candidate Narindra Modi has managed to catch their attention all across the country,'' said Teerath Singh, Uttarakhand BJP chief. The party has nominated three former chief ministers comprising BC Khanduri from Pauri, BS Koshiyari from Nainital and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank from Hardiwar against Congress candidates. ''The former chief ministers have been in a similar situation before and are expected to give the desired results. There is a double anti-incumbency working against the Congress and this will certainly benefit the BJP candidates,'' said Teerath Singh Rawat, president of Uttarakhand BJP. Though the party strategists have their eyes firmly fixed on all the five seats, the focus is more on the Haridwar, Almora and Nainital parliamentary seats. ''The Chief Minister, Harish Rawat, has put much at stake on these seats, and from the Haridwar seat his wife is in the race. The situation is slightly tough here, but we will get the sense of the situation once the voting begins. Our party workers will be able to sense the situation even before the results are out,'' said a senior BJP leader. Throughout the election campaigning the BJP appeared better organised and was ably helped by the party bigwigs who managed to hold rallies in all the five constituencies. |

Bahuguna, Tehri royal families cross swords once again
Dehradun, May 6 Mala Raj Laxmi Shah, sitting BJP MP from Tehri Garhwal, will be defending her seat against Saket Bahuguna of the Congress, who is the son of former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and grandson of former UP Chief Minister HN Bahuguna. The Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha seat was represented by Maharaja Manvendra Shah, the last ruler of Tehri, for a record eight time after Independence. It was after his death in 2007 that Vijay Bahuguna won the seat defeating Maharaja Manvendra Shah's son Manujendra Shah in a byelection. In the 1999 and 2004 Lok Sabha polls, Maharaja Manvendra Shah had defeated Vijay Bahuguna from Tehri. In 1998, Vijay Bahuguna had lost his first Lok Sabha elections from Pauri Garhwal. But in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Vijay Bahuguna again won the seat defeating BJP candidate and ace shooter Jaspal Rana. After a slender victory of the Congress in the 2012 Assembly polls, Vijay Bahuguna was given the reins of the state by the Congress high command and he had to quit his Lok Sabha seat to enter the state legislature. In the byelection held in October 2012, Mala Raj Laxmi Shah, daughter-in-law of Manvendra Shah, defeated Saket Bahuguna. It is not only Bahugunas who are fighting an important electoral battle, one of the maternal cousins of Vijay Bahuguna, BC Khanduri, is also fighting the polls from Pauri Garhwal. Khanduri represented the Pauri Garhwal Lok Sabha seat four times as a BJP candidate and also remained a Union minister in the NDA (NDA) government led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Khanduri is pitted against state minister Harak Singh Rawat. |

Parties go all out to seek votes from Mussoorie residents
Mussoorie, May 6 Both Congress and BJP workers are ensuring through door-to-door campaign to bring the voters to polling booths on May 7, the day scheduled for polling. The Congress workers have divided themselves in one or two groups and are making rounds in various colonies to garner support for their candidate in Mussoorie Assembly segment. BJP is also not far behind with MLA, Mussoorie, Ganesh Joshi, paying a visit to the BJP election office in Mussoorie to oversee the last-minute booth-level preparations for the Lok Sabha elections. for the polling scheduled for May 7. He also said that the booth-level parties will arrive at the polling booth around 6 am, irrespective of rain or hail, and remain there till the end of the polls around 6 pm. Devendar Pal also alleged that the partisan attitude of the state government towards Cantonment Board, Dehradun, would mean that the voters will cast their votes in favour of BJP. There are around 13,41,393 voters in the Tehri parliamentary constituency, out of which 7,04,071 are male voters while the population of female voters is around 6,37,268. Around 16 candidates are in the fray, out of which 15 are male and one is female. With the weather taking an ugly turn in Mussoorie with thunder showers this evening, most of the candidates are keeping their fingers crossed as the inclement weather could affect the polling percentage, tilting it in anyone’s favour. When contacted the assistant returning officer, Ramjee Saran, also looked concerned but said that all the arrangements have been made to conduct free and fare poll in Mussoorie. However, he said that no alternate arrangements were in place, yet in case of heavy rains in the town, the Election Commission would do whatever it takes to make polling convenient for the voters on May 7. The key issues have become irrelevant in these elections with the candidates from major political parties relying mostly on the charisma of individual politicians such as the Chief Minister Harish Rawat from Congress and Narendra Modi from BJP. |
