Cultural events mark Baisakhi celebrations at Pinjore Gardens

Kalka, April 13
Various cultural programmes were organised today in the Yadavindra Gardens, Pinjore, as part of the two-day Baisakhi celebrations, which commenced today. The garden was beautifully decorated with lights. The presentation of ‘Haryanavi’ folk songs and folk dances by the artists of Haryana Public Relations Department and Haryana Cultural Affairs Department were the main attraction of the programme.

Sunit Sharma, divisional manager, Haryana Tourism, said to attract the tourists, craft bazaar was installed in the Baisakhi fair for the first time. A cultural programme was also organised. A Rangoli competition of school children was also held. More than 12 schools from Kalka, Pinjore and its vicinity participated in the ragoli competition.

Sophia Convent School, Kalka, bagged the first prize in the rangoli competition in the senior Category. DAV Surajpur was declared second and Government Senior Secondary School, Kalka, got the third prize. In junior category, St. Vivekanand School, Pinjore, was adjudged first and second while Angel Public School, Pinjore, got the third position.

Hundreds of devotees from Kalka, Pinjore and its adjoining villages took a dip in the historic Dropadi Kund (Dhara Mandal) of Pinjore.

Pushpinder clinches bodybuilding title

Bodybuilder Pushpinder Bharti was awarded with the title of Champion of champions Senior Mr. Chandigarh, during the 25th silver jubilee Senior Mr. Chandigarh Body Building Championship held at Maharashtra Bhawan, Sector 19 today. The competition was organised by Chandigarh Amateur Body Building Association. Another local bodybuilder Kirat Pal Singh was awarded as the best performance of the year and was awarded with a cash prize of Rs 5,000. Pushpinder Bharti was awarded with a cash prize of Rs 51,000.

City speedsters set tracks blazing

Speed lovers from Chandigarh won laurels during the Baisakhi sprint, a motor sport event, being held near Sarangpur village here today. In the biker’s event, Chandigarh's champion biker Mohit Verma ranked first clocking down 399.582 seconds. Another local lad Yogesh Lakhani finished the race in 432.826 seconds to secure runner-up position while Umang Saxena of Solan with 448.85 seconds attained third place in the event. Bikers from Delhi, Gurgaon, Uttarakhand, Shimla, Solan, Chandigarh and various parts of Punjab participated in the event.

In the women's track-race of 8.5 kilometers, Vaneeta Kang of Chandigarh registered first place followed by Delhi’s Dr Maninder Sharma. In the rally-prepared vehicles category, Philip Mathias of Delhi won the first prize completing the race in 397.765 seconds whereas Rahul Kanthraj of Bangalore, India’s most successful precision driver recorded a total timing of 408.832 seconds to finish second. Sanjay Sikand of Delhi secured third position completing the race in 410.099 seconds.

In the stock vehicles category (any car of any make), Amanpreet Ahluwalia of Delhi ranked first in 430.246 seconds whereas Bobby Bhogal and Anil Wadia from Delhi finished second and third, respectively. The competition was organised in three categories, ZIP- for any four-wheeler of any make, ZAP- for rally-prepared vehicles only, with anti-roll cages and modified engines and ZOOM- for motorcycles. A total of 68 participants participated in the Zip and Zap categories while 32 entries were received in the ZOOM category.

600 participate in health awareness run

Panchkula, April 13
More than 600 athletes from various parts of India participated in the 1st Panchkula Awareness Run in different age-groups, organised by an NGO Sarthee and Haryana Masters Athletics association, at Tau Devi Lal stadium, held here today. The competition was organized for boys and girls in U-18 years, 18+, 40 +, 50+; men and women 60 years. The run was flagged off by Justice AG Masih and Tejpal Gupta, MD Chandigarh city centre.

Local lad wins international tennis tourney

Chandigarh, April 13
Pawan Kapoor, a local contender and an employee of CITCO, won laurels after winning the RABO bank international tennis tournament concluded in Holland recently. In the final of the men's (senior) category, which lasted for over 150 minutes, he outclassed Jon Mouter of Holland 6-3, 6-7(5-7) and 6-1.

Kapoor won the first set easily. However, Jon Mouter gained momentum in the second set and managed to take the score to 6-6. In the tie-breaker, Mouter maintained the consistency and claimed the set by winning two back-to-back points. Kapoor bounced back in the final set and won it 6-1 to claim the title.

In the boys (U-12) final, Zuber Chawla of Strawberry Field’s World School, Sector 26, won the inter-country title while in the girls (U-8) category, Vindhya Kapoor was awarded a consolation prize for being the most enthusiastic learner and player of the tournament.
