MC employees sans salaries
GS Paul Tribune News Service Amritsar, April 11 Municipal corporation employees continue to face problems in getting their monthly salaries. There are around 5,000 staff members who were resenting the delay in payment of salaries. On the assurance of MC Commissioner DPS Kharbanda, employees withdrew their agitation. “It was a temporary delay in receiving government funds. The salaries will be released soon,” said Kharbanda. Vinod Bitta, president, Safai Mazdoor Union (Bitta group), said even as authorities had started disbursal of salaries in a phased manner and we had decided to suspend our agitation, there was no permanent solution to the problem of salaries getting delayed. “It has been a nuisance since January when the government had failed to release funds to the corporation leading to delay in payment of our salaries,” he said. Surinder Tona, president of the Nagar Nigam Union, Amritsar, said that it happened in February also. Actually, the salary bill of the MC employees comes to around Rs 11 crore. The MC spares its share to the tune of around Rs 4 crore, but for meeting the rest of the demand, it has to depend upon government funding. The government extends the MC its fund quota due against VAT payments and other taxes, which are contributed to the state exchequer by the MC. This payment generally gets delayed. |

City yet to cash in on airport infrastructure
Hopes from next MP to make a case for its uplift and turn things around Neeraj Bagga Tribune News Service
Amritsar, April 11 The Amritsar airport boasts of state-of-the-art infrastructure and its strategically location of being close to Central Asia was said to carry immense potential in boosting trade. However, all these objectives have not been met yet. The primary reason is that there is an absence of direct flights to Amritsar. The airport losses mounted after various airlines cancelled their international flights. Earlier, Air India discontinued its Amritsar-Birmingham-Toronto flight, which was arguably the most successful flight in the annals of the national carrier's history. It was withdrawn on October 31, 2010. However, it was not the only flight that was cancelled from the Amritsar airport. The British Midland International (BMI) had pulled out its Amritsar-Almaty-London flight in October 2012. Before this, Air India had suspended its Amritsar-Toronto flight due to strikes of pilots. The Singapore Airlines had launched thrice a week Amritsar-Singapore flight on October 1, 2004. The service ran well for around five years before being discontinued in early 2009. Later, Jet Airways launched its Amritsar-London flight only to withdraw it after sometime. A progressive farmer, Kuljit Singh, who has a 25-acre farm on the airport road, said that after learning the setting up of the temporary cargo at the airport, he was inclined to switch over to vegetable-growing. However, discontinuing of flights at regular intervals disappointed him and he gave up the decision. He opined that the next MP must spare thought over it and put in efforts to start cargo flights to discontinued destinations, especially in the Central and Middle East countries. He said a conducive weather condition offers immense potential to export vegetables from the region. Even as the infrastructure of the Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport is being boosted by the Airports Authority of India for the past few years, the airport doesn't seem to have got its due in terms of a national-level airport and the frequency of international flights. The Union Government with an investment of about Rs 150 crore offered a state-of-the-art infrastructure and established the airport building in consonance with the contemporary architecture prevailing around the world. This entire development was carried out in two phases of a Master Plan to give the airport a new look with the objective of more passenger facilities and increased security. |

Doctorate professors assigned peon’s duties
Jalandhar, April 11 The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) has brought this to the notice of the ECI a number of times, complaining against anomalies in the assignment of polling duties to college lecturers. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has also ruled recently that lecturers and teachers shall be assigned duties as per their grades. A number of college lecturers, professors and associate professors have been assigned duties as polling officers — with employees subordinate to them being made their Presiding Officers — greatly irking them. Similarly, many school principals have also been assigned duties as polling officers, despite having grades of Class I officers. |
