NE: Dalit-Muslim factor may spring a surprise
New Delhi, March 26 With the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) fielding Abdul Sami Salmani as its candidate from the constituency which is considered party's strong base given the large number of SC/OBC population, the elections may yield lots of surprises. Salmani, is the single Muslim face this time and expected to upset the calculation of Congress, BJP and AAP, if the Dalit-Muslim factor worked in his favour. Agarwal, who was not on the best of terms with former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, had stolen the show in this constituency during the last Lok Sabha elections in 2009. He had won the polls by a huge margin of over 2 lakh votes. However, with Congress's drubbing in recent assembly elections, the scenario seems to be different this time around. While the battle was only against the BJP and Congress in 2009, the emergence of AAP has put aside Congress, as Muslims now have other option to stop BJP in the constituency. North East Delhi comprises 25-27 per cent of Muslim population, nearly 17 per cent Scheduled Caste voters, 11 per cent Brahmins and 14 per cent OBCs. The constituency has the highest percentage of Muslim voters among the seven Lok Sabha seats in the city. However, both the BJP and AAP are relying on the high concentration of Poorvanchalli voters in the area. While the famous Bhojpuri singer and BJP candidate Manoj Tiwari hopes to win voters' heart by playing the caste connection, AAP is also set to use the same formula after it announced BHU Professor Anand Kumar, who also taught at JNU, from the constituency. Prof Kumar was born in Varanasi. AAP which had won three out of ten assembly seats in 2013 polls is confident of providing an alternative platform to Muslims who want to counter BJP. Though BJP had taken five out of ten seats in the last-year polls, the party is apparently facing opposition from the local leaders for not giving them due attention. The Congress workers are worried about the 'Modi propaganda' by BJP. "We are a secular party. They have a communal agenda. People like the path we take. They understand that if the country remains secular, a strong foundation is laid for progress," said Agarwal. Asked whether his confidence stems from the large Muslim population in the constituency, Agarwal said, "I have fought many elections. I do not see them in this manner. We are a national party which contests elections on the basis of our history and our performance." While Tiwari said, "My opponents might be tall figures, but people's expectations are different. I am confident of winning. People have seen AAP's work in the 49 days of its misrule so its campaigning is not going to help the party at all." |
Cong has turned Chandni Chowk into slum, says Vardhan
New Delhi, March 26 Congress candidate Kapil Sibal has been a sitting MP for the past two terms. The Congress had its government in Delhi for 15 years. Dr Vardhan said that the Congress government remained busy in "corruption and misrule". It played "fraud" on lakhs of people living in the historical area of Chandni Chowk. In the presence of more than 600 prominent persons of many religious organizations, Dr Vardhan inaugurated party election offices at Wazirpur and Shalimar Bagh with "hawan and poojan" and chanting of mantras. Area Singh Sabha presented him with the "Saropa", a symbol of victory and honour. Before inaugurating the election offices, he interacted with morning walkers in the parks and appealed to them to help in making Narendra Modi the Prime Minister. The BJP Lok Sabha candidate addressed a big public meeting in Wazirpur industrial area. He described in detail the anti-people policies and 15 years' misrule of the Sheila Dikshit government in Delhi. The area MP, Kapil Sibal, has represented Chandni Chowk for the past 10 years, but he has betrayed the people of Chandni Chowk. He only laid the foundation stones of development works in the constituency, but no construction work has been started yet. |
Maken granted 'favours' to private builder: Khetan
New Delhi, March 26 Khetan claimed that the DDA had sold the land to the private builder on the pretext of rehabilitation of Kathputli Colony residents at just Rs 6.11 crore much below the estimated cost of Rs 1,000 as per the internal assessment of DDA. The basis of his allegations pertaining to the irregularities during Maken's tenure of the Urban Development Minister is the RTI replies he received from the residents of Kathputli Colony, he said. "The issue exposes the nexus between the land mafia and the DDA and the land was given to Raheja Developers on the condition that residents of Kathputli Colony will be rehabilitated. Documents obtained from the DDA show that excess land was given to the developer. Also, till date no work regarding the construction of houses has begun even after 18 months of work being awarded. The land was given during Maken's tenure. Is there a connection between Maken and Raheja Developers and what is the nature of connection?" Khetan questioned. However, the DDA official rubbished the allegations calling it unsubstantiated. "Project was awarded after taking everybody into confidence, including the finance department. It happened through proper bidding. The allegations are baseless," he said. |

Shastri Park comes alive as Modi addresses
New Delhi, March 26 The area falls in the Muslim-dominated North East constituency. While urging the community to sideline Congress and support BJP, Modi took
a dig at Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party and said that it is the Congress's B-team. "They (AAP) first abused Congress and then formed the government with their support and after that resigned in 49 days so that they can canvass for Congress in the Lok Sabha polls. This clearly shows they are Congress's team B," Modi said. He said AAP lacks maturity and accountability to run a government. "Delhi voters will have to decide on their experience. They already had a taste of
the AAP government which has nothing to do with the welfare of the nation," he said. Other senior BJP leaders, including its Lok
Sabha candidates from Delhi, were also present at the rally. Manoj Tiwari, BJP candidate from North East Delhi, tried to cash
in on his Poorvanchalli connection and spoke in Bhojpuri. "I have been campaigning in the streets of northeast Delhi for past ten days. People should think before voting as there are some parties that left Delhi in 49 days," Tiwari said. Speaking at the rally, Tiwari said the 'outsider' tag with him has led him to buy a flat at Bhajanpur in Yamuna Vihar. |
BJP seeks action against DDA
New Delhi, March 26 He said that the DDA had got a news item published in a Hindi daily under the heading "Chunav ke baad DDA dwara 45,000 flaton ka tohfa" on March 23 and 25 news under the heading 'DDA ke rihaishi makaano me khol sakenge dukaane'. He said that the people of Delhi were being misled by the publication of false news in periodicals. Such populist announcements definitely influence the voters. In the letter, Malhotra said that at the time of the last assembly elections, the Congress government in Delhi led by Sheila Dikshit had made false announcement of constructing 60,000 houses to influence the voters. The Lokayukta had taken cognizance of this point and reprimanded her. |
Nepali girl gangraped in Mahipalpur
New Delhi, March 26 The police said that about 12 years ago, the victim had arrived in India with a woman who was acquainted with her. She had stayed in the woman's house in Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, and shifted to Delhi about two years ago. She stayed with an NGO in the Sangam Vihar area, Southeast Delhi. When she turned 18 last year, she was sent to a Nari Niketan, a shelter home for girls. During her stay there, she met a man named Amrish, who is a resident of Mahipalpur. He told her that he could find her a job as a domestic help. Amrish would often ask her to leave Nari Niketan and stay with him at Mahipalpur. "With the hope for a better future, the girl left the shelter home on Monday and came to meet Amrish in Mahipalpur," said a police officer. Yesterday around 10.30 pm, she went to a market in Mahipalpur for food. She lost her way. The police claimed that Sandeep, Ashish and the juvenile saw her alone. On the pretext of showing her directions to Amrish's house, the accused took her to a forested area near Indira Gandhi International Airport. They allegedly overpowered her there and took turns to rape her. The police said that the juvenile was apprehended when the girl shouted for help upon seeing a Police Control Room vehicle. The other two accused, Ashish and Sandeep, fled, but were caught later. |
Armyman attacked by landlord
New Delhi, March 26 The incident took place in front of the couple's newborn baby. The victim has been identified by the police as Thang Min Len (27). Seven people, including a woman, were arrested in connection with the case today. The police said that Len was waiting for his mother-in-law whose flight was scheduled to land in Delhi late at night. He asked his landlord, Dharampal Tokas, for an extra key to the main gate of their house. Tokas allegedly refused Len's requests. Locals said that this led to an argument between Tokas's son and Len. A couple of minutes later, it turned violent. According to the locals, about 70 northeastern people soon arrived at Len's house and accused Tokas of misbehaving with Len and his family. Len allegedly punched a glass window of his room and injured himself. "The landlord then placed a call to the police and when a police team arrived, Len alleged that the landlord and his son attacked him," said Dheeraj, a local shopkeeper. However, Len alleged that after the matter was settled, the landlord's son with his family and a few others attacked him. At the site of the incident, Len's room was ransacked and there were bloodstains on the walls. The police took Len to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and he was discharged later. |
Nurse suicide: Colleagues seek investigation
New Delhi, March 26 The protest was called following a general body meeting of the AIIMS nurses, in which it was decided that the struggle against the "high-handedness" of the administration of the institution should be continued. Molly Siddichan (46) allegedly committed suicide at her South Delhi home by hanging herself. According to the union, the prima facie evidence points towards the fact that she was upset with her transfer to a night shift in private ward. In her suicide note, she had apparently written that she was upset over her recent transfer to the neurosurgery ward from the ICU after eight years of service. She had also alleged harassment by senior staff and denial of child care leave. |
