Jostling for space in medical wards and the emergency ward at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, while thousands of patients keep struggling to find a private room every day, the hospital kept seven of the 44 private rooms reserved for VIPs last year.

Fog: 3 trains delayed
Chandigarh, January 13
Dense fog continues to affect the rail traffic. Railway officials said three long-route trains were affected due to the fog. The Howrah Kalka was delayed by 12 hours, Unchahaar Express by more than 7 hours and the Chandigarh Lucknow Express by more than two hours.

Government schools reopen to thin attendance

Nearly two weeks after the winter vacations, government schools in the city opened today. Most of the private schools are opening tomorrow. There was low attendance in several government schools today, but department officials said it would improve in a day or two.

PU proposes training courses for non-teaching staff
Chandigarh, January 13
Panjab University is coming up with a proposal for short-term training courses for the non-teaching staff for which funds will be allocated in the budget annually. The authorities are mooting this proposal keeping in view the fact that a majority of the clerical staff are facing problems while adopting new technology, which affects the working of the departments.

Children’s theatre fest from Jan 17
Chandigarh, January 13
The Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi in collaboration with the Education Department and the Department of Cultural Affairs is organising the Children’s Theatre Festival from January 17 to January 24 at the Sector 17 Plaza. The plays, enacted by students of government schools of the city, will be staged between 12 pm and 2 pm. During the course of the festival, different government schools will stage 20 plays that they had prepared during the theatre workshops last year.

Chandigarh: MDAV School, Sector 22, celebrated Lohri with a lot of fervour. The students enjoyed different activities such as songs, poems and speeches on the school premises. The children were told about the importance of the festival through speeches. Eatables were also distributed among the students.

Lohri celebration was organised at CGC, Jhanjeri campus, with a lot of exuberance and fanfare on Monday. The bonfire, symbolising the burial of old beliefs and the rebirth of spring, was lit by Satnam Singh
Sandhu, Chancellor, Chandigarh University, and Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal, president,
CGC. Around 100 staff members, along with 500 students of MBA, BTech, BBA, BCA and
BEd, participated in the festival. Rashpal expressed concern over the declining sex ratio. He said the girl child should be equally welcomed into the family. Everybody should celebrate Lohri for both newly born girl and boy child.
