Kejriwal’s Janta Darbar, a political gimmick: Goel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 11
Leaving Janta Darbar in between by the Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, today has become an issue of discussion in the Opposition parties who said that it was a political gimmick of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Delhi unit chief of the BJP Vijay Goel said that the AAP has befooled and humiliated thousands of people in the name of Janta Darbar. Thousands of people came to Janta Darbar with their grievances, but "not even a single complaint was tackled. If this is not a political stunt, what else could it be?"

Goel said, "Any person with common sense should know that holding an open public hearing on road by a Chief Minister is not feasible in a city of 1.6 crore people. So, one is compelled to say that Kejriwal and his colleagues are merely playing to the gallery and this caused great inconvenience and humiliation to the people today. If the AAP was really serious about public hearing, it would have held it in every department, at assembly level and within the Secretariat also."

Political gimmickry should not overtake governance but Kejriwal and his team are desperate to take shortcuts to popularity in view of the Lok Sabha polls, added Goel.

What is even a greater cause of worry is that the AAP is now running a parallel network of so called AAP volunteers and trying to manage complete administration through this network.

"Private individuals cannot be allowed to take administration in their own hands which the AAP is doing. This will destroy the administrative mechanisms, structures, processes and systems and the people will suffer as administration will soon become completely defunct and will not be able to cater to them," said the BJP leader.

It will be better for the welfare of Delhi'ites if the AAP-Cong government focuses on providing better administration rather than political gimmicks.

It is sad to see that instead of tackling the real issues of price rise, corruption and women safety, AAP leaders are behaving incoherently due to their misplaced arrogance. They have let off the big fish go when it comes to handling corruption, he said.

Though many handed over their memoranda of grievances to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and returned with acknowledgement, there were others such as those from many government hospitals who left without meeting the ministers after the crowd breaking barricades became unmanageable in front the Secretariat.

Manipur girl rape case: Students, activists protest police inaction
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 11
Students and women activists, accompanied by trade unionists and academicians from various north-east communities and progressive organisations protested against the alleged police inaction on the victimisation of a woman from Manipur who complained about being raped by an NGO activist, Khurshid Anwar, who later committed suicide on December 18, 2013.

They demonstrated outside the Delhi Police Headquarters, ITO, under the banner of the North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) pointing out that ever since the complaint has come to light the case has seen unnecessary politicisation i.e. negative intervention in the case by those with "vested interests".

"Since then certain persons have been undertaking activities which amount to sheer intimidation and vilification of the complainant. The ongoing smear campaign against the complainant has reached to unprecedented proportions and has strong racist connotations," they said.

According to NEFIS and the other protesters, the campaign has made a free and fair trial increasingly difficult and to ensure an impartial trial against people who were involved in the case and its reporting to the National Commission for Women (NCW) should be properly investigated.

Maya John, a leading women's right activist and convener of the Centre for Struggling Women expressed concern over the police inaction in protecting the complainant, and therefore, in ensuring a free and fair trial.

While they should refrain from communicating their personal views in the media without acquiring proper consent from her as this would be detrimental for the complainant, they said while demanding that the rape shield law be enforced immediately and that the perpetrators of this vicious smear campaign be brought to the book swiftly.

New Delhi, January 11
Just three days after the launch of anti-corruption helpline by the Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, the anti-corruption branch of the Delhi Government arrested two constables on alleged charges of extortion following a sting operation by a vendor.

The constables were identified as Ishwar Singh and Sandeep Kumar from the Janakpuri police station.

Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Rajendra Kumar said that a complaint was registered on the helpline by a woollens seller in the area regarding the constables allegedly demanding extortion money from them.

"He performed a sting operation and gave it to the anti-corruption department following which the trap was laid and the constables were arrested," Kumar said.

The government yesterday had introduced 1031, an easy to remember anti-corruption helpline number. It has another eight digit number 011-27357169.
