Lalru Civil Hospital faces staff crunch

Dera Bassi, January 9
Civil hospital, Lalru, has been facing shortage of doctors and other facilities. As per information, as many as 250 patients visit here daily for treatment but due to staff crunch and unavailability of other medical facilities they have to face harassment.

There are 6 posts of medical officers which are lying vacant. According to sources, there are no lady doctors for delivery cases even when around 50 cases of delivery are witnessed here daily. Meanwhile, SMO Dr SK Mittal said a lot of facilities were unavailable in the Civil Hospital and these should be resolved soon for the benefit of the public.

Faculty development programme organised

Dera Bassi, January 9
Shaheed Udham Singh Engineering College is conducting an 8-day faculty development programme on ‘quality assurance in teaching and learning’ from January 6 to 13.

Around 40 teachers from the colleges of SUS Group of Institutions are participating in the programme.

Topics such as requirements of 21st century workplace, the development of attitude for learning, various strategies for delivery of lectures, the methods of student evaluation and feedback and the changing strategies of professional education being used in advance countries were presented through special presentations and discussions. — OC

Man arrested under NDPS Act

Chandigarh, January 9
The police have arrested Gurinder Pal Singh, a resident of Amritsar, and recovered 22 gram of heroin from his possession. He was nabbed at the Sector 7 sports complex, Sector 7. The police have registered a case under Section 21 of the NDPS Act at the Sector 26 police station.

Fraudster booked

Santosh Kumar, a resident of Bhagwanpur village, Mandi district, said a person withdrew Rs 2 lakh from his LIC account. The police have registered a case of cheating under Section 420 of the IPC and a probe is on.

Theft at temple

A theft was reported in a temple at Mani Majra yesterday. Bawa Ram Dhiman of Mani Majra reported to the police that a silver 'mukut', a silver flute and Rs 20,000 in cash were stolen from Shiv Mandir, Dera Sahib,on January 8.

Man held for harassing wife

The police have arrested Karanvir Singh Goel for harassing his wife. Sameer Gill, a resident of Sector 34, reported to the police that her husband Karanvir Singh Gosal, her father-in-law Gurcharan Singh Gosal, her mother-in-law Gurbans Gosal and elder brother Harmanjot Singh harassed her for dowry. She said they forced her to leave the house.

Complainant turns hostile

A complainant in a corruption case turned hostile in a local court today. Jaspinder Singh retracted from his statements in the CBI court.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had last year arrested a patwari, posted at the building branch of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, for accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.

As per the complainant, the patwari, Balraj Singh, had initially demanded Rs 2 lakh and the deal was struck at Rs 1 lakh. The accused had come to collect the first instalment of Rs 50,000 when he was nabbed. The complainant stated that no bribe was demanded and it was a confusion.

Man held for theft bid

A day after a thief attempted to break open an ATM of Punjab National Bank in Sector 9, the police arrested Bhunesh, a resident of Sector 42, also recovered the stolen CCTV camera from his possession.

The ATM is at a stone's throw from the UT police headquarters. There was no guard deployed there even though a similar incident was reported at the same ATM on December 31. The accused tried to break the ATM with bricks and fled with the CCTV camera. Bank manager Lal Chand reported to the police that he noticed the door of the ATM open with the camera missing. A case has been registered at the Sector 3 police station.

SGGS-26 judokas lift trophy

SGGS College, Sector 26, won the Panjab University Inter-College Judo Championship for Men with 31 points, which concluded at the Gymnasium Hall of Panjab University, here today.

DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, finished at the runners-up spot with 12 points while SCD Government College, Ludhiana, secured the third position with 9.5 points. GGDSD College, Sector 32, secured the fourth place with 8 points.

Dhruti loses to Thai opponent in tennis

Seventh seed Bunyawi Thamchaiwat from Thailand defeated second seed Dhruti Tatachar Venugopal during the ITF Grade-3 Junior World Ranking Tournament being held at CLTA Tennis Courts, Sector 10, here today.

The 2nd seed lost the match to the 7th seed in straight sets by 6-2, 6-3. In other matches of the same group, top seed Pranjala Yadlapalli defeated qualifier En Shou Liang of Taipei by 6-0 and 6-2 whereas 6th seed Vasanti Shinde upset 4th seed Plobrung Plipueh of Thailand.

In the boys’ category, 5th seed Garvit Batra lost to top seed Teeradon Tortrakul of Thailand by 6-2 and 7-5. Garvit after losing the 1st set took a 3-1 lead but Teeradon Tortrakul bounced back to level it at 3-3 and thereafter taking full advantage of the opportunities defeated his opponent by 2-6 and 5-7.

Anil Kumar adjudged best yogi

Anil Kumar of DAV College Abohar won the title of Best Yogi, on the concluding day of the Panjab University Inter-College Yoga Championship for Men (A-Division), held at Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46, here today.

Ashish of Panjab University Campus and Amit Kumar of DAV College, Sector 10, secured the second and third place, respectively.

DAV College, Abohar, won the overall trophy with a total of 1,290 points followed by DAV College, Chandigarh, and MMD DAV College, Gidderbaha, with 1,136 and 661 points, respectively. Hosts secured the fourth position with 516 points.

Local shuttler bags silver

Local badminton player Muskan Sohi bagged a silver medal in the individual category matches of the 59th National School Games Badminton Championship for (Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19) girls that concluded at the badminton hall of sports complex in Sector 42, here today.

The tournament was organised by Vidya Bharti. Muskan Sohi defeated Riya from Gujarat by 31-22 in the championship.
