New year, new record
Queenstown, January 1 Afridi scored a 37-ball hundred against Sri Lanka in 1996 and had remained the fastest across all formats of the international game since. Anderson, 23, brought up the mark with his 12th six of the innings after the third one-day international in Queenstown was reduced to a 21-over match due to rain. New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum (33 off 11 balls) started the onslaught before Jesse Ryder (104), who completed his hundred in 46 balls, and Anderson added 191 runs for the fourth wicket. “It's one of those things you don't plan on doing when you go out there but obviously with it (being) a reduced game it makes it easier to go harder at it earlier and Brendon showed his intent early on and Jesse played an unbelievable innings as well,” Anderson said in a televised interview. “I think me and Jesse were thinking every ball was going to get us out or go for six so it was nice to have that feeling out there and get them out of the middle.” Brief scores: New Zealand 283 for 4 in 21 overs (Anderson 131*, Ryder 104) beat West Indies 124 for 5 (Bravo 56*)

Wawrinka storms into quarters, Youzhny pulls out
Chennai, January 1 Title favourite and world number eight Wawrinka needed just 54 minutes to brush aside the challenge of 79th ranked rival in the rain-hit second round match. Youzhny conceded his match against Israeli Dudi Sela when he was trailing 1-3 in the opening set due to a stomach problem. A winner here in 2008, Youzhny issued a statement late on saying it was not possible for him to continue. "It's a stomach problem. I actually wanted to play, but it was not possible. When you have restricted movement, its no use to play and lose. It started last week in Thailand, some virus, and it continued this week too. I'm sorry for the tournament and the spectators, but its not possible for me to play," he said. The tournament has been hit badly by players pull out as Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic had decided not to compete due to an injury and Italian Fabio Fognini, who was to partner Leander Paes in the doubles, also pulled out due to an injury. Qualifier Alexander Kudryavtsev from Russia also conceded his match today after winning his first set rather easily against 95th ranked Slovakian Aljaz Bedene.

Punjab hammer Jharkhand, in quarters
Dhanbad, January 1 The result meant that Jharkhand will have to return to Group C after just one season. Off-spinner Gurkeerat took four for 59, while Rajwinder and Rahul Sharma picked three wickets apiece to skittle Jharkhand for 127 in their second innings at the Railway Stadium. Punjab bowlers took just 34.1 overs to bowl the hosts after they were asked to follow on. Resuming the day on 210 for 9, Jharkhand could add only six runs to end their first innings 300 run behind Punjab's total of 516. Rajwinder added one more wicket to his overnight tally of four, bringing up his second five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. For Jharkand, opener Rameez Nemat, who made 81 in the first innings, was the only batsman to resist as wickets kept tumbling at the other end. He made 48 off 85 balls, including seven fours. Gurkeerat finished with match figures of eight for 99, while Rajwinder spent 106 runs to claim his eight scalps. Mumbai-Gujarat match evenly poised
Valsad: A splendid rearguard action by their batsmen and three quick wickets have kept Mumbai in contention for a berth in the quarterfinals even as Gujarat would also fancy their chances as their Ranji Trophy Group A contest is headed for an exciting finish. In a chase of 175, Gujarat are 67 for three and need to bat cautiously to score the remaining runs while Mumbai would go all out to remove the seven remaining batsmen to move to the knockout stage.
— PTI Ranji Trophy Dewan’s 273 keeps Haryana in Ranji top-tier
Bhubaneswar: Opener Rahul Dewan hit a magnificent 273 to ensure that Haryana remained in the top tier of Ranji Trophy after taking a 384-run first-innings lead against Odisha on the third and penultimate day of their final Group A league match here today. A win for Odisha is now out of the equation as they trail by 351 runs overall after ending the day at 33 for no loss in their second innings. Three points from a draw on the basis of first innings lead will be enough for Haryana to push Jharkhand to the bottom of the nine-team Group A table, thereby saving themselves from relegation to Group C. Dewan, batting on 136 overnight, extended his score to 273 and his third-wicket partnership with Sachin Rana to 311, as Haryana declared on a mammoth 626 for four with two other batsmen also scoring centuries. Dewan faced 461 balls and struck 35 fours in bettering his previous best first-class score of 254 not out.

Clarke safe from boo boys as Oz eye sweep
Sydney, January 1 Three years ago, Australian frustrations at their team's humiliation by a rampant England boiled over with some vociferous catcalling when Clarke, standing in for the injured Ricky Ponting, came out to bat in the fifth test. Australia lost that series 3-1 with Clarke assuming the captaincy permanently not long afterwards and, although it has not always been a smooth path since, his team look more settled and confident than at any time in his reign. Victories by 381 runs, 218 runs, 150 runs and eight wickets are testimony to crushing Australian superiority in the first four Ashes Tests and Clarke's men will be going all out to drive home their advantage when the fifth gets underway on Friday. "We want to win this match, we know we've got to do all the hard work and we're looking at this like a final," said Mitchell Johnson. "We know they are going to come out fighting hard. They're not going to want to lose 5-0." That fight back from a team that was number one in the world as recently as August 2012 has long been anticipated. Two key players are no longer with the touring party with batsman Jonathan Trott having returned home to deal with some psychological issues and spinner Graeme Swann retiring after the Ashes were relinquished in Perth. Those remaining looked out of form and mentally exhausted in Melbourne, where they somehow managed to turn a 100-run lead with 10 second-innings wickets in hand into a humbling defeat in little more than 24 hours.

Younus, Misbah hundreds put Pakistan in control
Abu Dhabi, January 1 The pair added 218 runs for the fourth wicket as Pakistan reached 327 for four at the close of play on the second day with a lead of 123. Younus (136) dominated the partnership and the hapless Sri Lankan bowlers to complete his 23rd test hundred with a cover-driven four off left-arm spinner Rangana Herath. The stylish right-hander, 36, hit 19 fours and a six before being bowled by paceman Shaminda Eranga. Captain Misbah went into a shell as he neared his fifth test hundred but reached the mark in 241 deliveries with a single off Sachithra Senanayake. The 39-year-old was unbeaten on 105, including 13 fours, at stumps. Asad Shafiq (12) was the other not out batsman at the crease. Resuming on 46 for one wicket, Pakistan lost Mohammad Hafeez (11) early when the right-hander was caught by a diving Kaushal Silva at short cover off paceman Suranga Lakmal. Eranga then forced debutant Ahmed Shehzad (38) to miscue a pull shot straight to Dimuth Karunaratne at square leg to reduce Pakistan to 83 for three.

Arsenal leave it late to beat Cardiff
London, January 1 The culmination of England's congested festive schedule produced a tired display from the north Londoners who threatened to draw a blank for the second consecutive home game before Bendtner bundled home in the 88th minute and Walcott made sure of the points in stoppage time. Manchester City had briefly gone top after subduing a battling Swansea City 3-2 as Chelsea beat Southampton 3-0 and Liverpool won 2-0 at home to Hull City. Second-half strikes from Yaya Toure and Aleksandar Kolarov after Swansea's Wilfried Bony had cancelled out Fernandinho's early opener helped City record their fifth consecutive Premier League win. Bony grabbed a stoppage-time consolation and his second of the match with a skidding drive into the bottom corner, but there was to be no dramatic rescue for Swansea who are now without a win in six Premier League games. Fernando Torres became the first Chelsea striker to score a league away goal in 13 months as they maintained their title push and Christmas Day leaders Liverpool regained a top-four spot with as Luis Suarez netted for the 20th time this season. A Leighton Baines penalty in stoppage time rescued a 1-1 draw at Stoke City for Everton, who dropped to fifth, and Newcastle United stumbled in a 1-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion. Arsenal, with 45 points from 20 games, stayed one point clear of Manchester City and two ahead of Chelsea in third with Liverpool a further four points off the pace in fourth. At the other end of the table, Fulham edged 10-man West Ham United 2-1 and the east London side stayed second from bottom as Sunderland remain rooted to the foot of the table after losing 1-0 at home to Aston Villa. Crystal Palace are 18th after a 1-1 draw with 15th-placed Norwich City.

Federer makes good start
Brisbane, January 1 A 6-4 6-2 victory over his tough Finnish opponent hinted that he was ready to put on a competitive showing at Melbourne Park, now relieved of the back problems that dogged his 2013 campaign and contributed to his second and fourth-round exits at Wimbledon and the US Open. "I'm actually very clear in my mind," Federer said. "Now it's just down to forehands and backhands and tactics and movement. That's kind of what you want it to be, because unfortunately it hasn't always been that way last year." Murray beaten by Mayer Doha: Andy Murray lost 3-6 6-4 6-2 to German Florian Mayer in the Qatar Open second round on Wednesday, his second competitive match since returning from a back injury. The third-seeded Briton led 3-0 in the second set before Mayer won five games in a row and the world number 40 dominated the decider in Doha to seal victory in just under two hours. — Reuters |
Ferrari will keep Raikkonen busy
London, January 1 The start of a new year marks both a new phase and a return for the 'Iceman', the 2007 world champion who is back in the team he left to make way for Fernando Alonso. The 34-year-old moved from Lotus to team up with Spaniard Alonso in the sport's only current line-up of champions and has plenty of work to do with the first pre-season test in Jerez now only weeks away. "Kimi will be extremely busy since the beginning of January to work in this strange machine that I don't like at all, the simulator," Montezemolo said.
