Jadeja keeps South Africa in check
Durban, December 28 Kallis, who is playing his final Test before retiring, faced 224 balls for his unbeaten 78 in what could be his last Test innings. He took the Proteas to within 35 of India's first innings score. The 38-year-old notched up his 87th half-century in Tests and will resume day four with nightwatchman Dale Steyn. South Africa lost JP Duminy (28) just before the close, one of four wickets for Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja (four for 87). All-rounder Kallis was the junior partner in an excellent fourth-wicket stand of 127 with AB de Villiers (74) that got South Africa out of trouble earlier in the day. De Villiers, who bagged a century to help save the first Test in Johannesburg and has amassed at least 50 in each of his last 10 Test matches, looked fluent again as he scored all around the ground before edging to Virat Kohli at first slip off the bowling of Jadeja. The South African vice-captain said it was a privilege to spend so much time at the crease with Kallis. "I personally have a lot of fond memories batting with Jacques, I scored my first Test hundred with him when he was at the wicket, I was there for both his double-hundreds," de Villiers said. "He has meant so much to me in my career, I probably wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for all the advice (he gave me) on and off the field throughout my career." The pair steadied the innings after a mini-collapse in the morning session when the hosts lost three wickets for 10 runs. The home side had started the day well, Graeme Smith (47) and Alviro Petersen (62) moving the side briskly from their overnight score of 82 and adding 21 runs before the former was excellently caught by Shikhar Dhawan running towards the boundary at cover off Jadeja. — Reuters Scoreboard India first innings 334 South Africa first innings (overnight 82-0) Smith c Dhawan b Jadeja 47 Petersen c Vijay b Jadeja 62 Amla b Shami 3 Kallis not out 78 de Villiers c Kohli b Jadeja 74 Duminy lbw Jadeja 28 Steyn not out 0 Extras (lb-6, w-1) 7 Total (5 wickets; 104.5 overs) 299 Fall of wickets: 1-103 2-113 3-113 4-240 5-298 Bowling Khan 16-2-46-0 Shami 19-2-62-1 Sharma 23-7-76-0 Jadeja 37-9-87-4 Rohit 9.5-1-22-0. |
BCCI to ‘intervene’ in SC case on Modi issue
Chennai, December 28 The decision to “intervene” in the Special Leave Petition filed in the Supreme Court, was taken in an Emergent Working Committee meeting of the Board to discuss the possible implications of Modi's re-entry into the RCA. “It was noted by the members that Modi had contested for the post of President in the elections of RCA notwithstanding his expulsion by BCCI,” BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel said in a release. “The members decided that the BCCI must intervene in the SLP filed by Mr. Rungta in the SC challenging the Rajasthan Sports Act and get clarified the position of BCCI to enable the enforcement of its resolution passed on 25th September 2013 expelling Lalit Modi.” The Board, however, made it clear that “subject to the decision of the Supreme Court, strict disciplinary action should be taken against the delinquent member while protecting the interest of the game in the state of Rajasthan”. — PTI Our representative ill-treated at BCCI meeting: RCA
The Rajasthan Cricket Association today claimed that its representative Mehmood Abdi was ill-treated and not allowed to attend the BCCI Working Committee meeting to explain how his client Lalit Modi was allowed to contest RCA elections. In an e-mail to BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel, RCA Secretary KK Sharma sought an apology for the way Abdi was handled by the security personnel at the hotel where the meeting was being held and for the embarrassment it caused to the state unit. RCA is not a member of BCCI's working committee. "Minimum courtesy demands that you would place our request before the Working Committee and inform us if we are going to be permitted to present our case or not,” Sharma said. — PTI |
India thrash UAE by 189 runs in U-19 Asia Cup
Sharjah, December 28 Batting first, India scored 320 for four with Herwadkar (101), Ankush Bains (77), Sanju Samson (65) and Ricky Bhui (54) contributing handsomely. In reply, UAE were bowled out for 131 in 40.1 over with pacer Deepak Hooda (4/21) and off-spinner Aamir Gani (3/33) sharing bulk of the spoils. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav also took couple of wickets. Bains and Herwadkar added 162 runs for the opening stand in 31 overs before the wicketkeeper-batsman was bowled by pacer Sajid Khan. Bains faced 85 deliveries for his 77 that had eight boundaries. In-form skipper Vijay Zol (1) didn't fire this time as pacer Pankaj Prakash had him caught by Chirag Suri. Brief Scores: India U-19 320/4 (Herwadkar 101, Bains 77, Samson 65); UAE 131 in 40.1 overs (Hooda 4/21, Gani 3/33). — Agenciess |
Scoring runs against Proteas is reassuring: Vijay
durban, December 28 “Home or overseas, scoring runs makes me happy. I am happy with the way I batted the whole day yesterday. Of course, it is disappointing that I couldn’t make a hundred,” said the batsman. “Scoring runs against the number one side in the world is self-assuring. With the kind of attack that they have, and this is not a flat pitch, it is a two-paced slow wicket. So it is difficult to score runs. I thought I batted well.” When asked specifically about an area that he had worked hard on, Vijay replied, “The one thing that got me out was playing away from the body, and especially in this part of the world the cover drive is not on. I just wanted to cut down on that and play straight as much as possible.” Proud of comeback: SteynDale Steyn feels proud of his six-wicket haul in the ongoing Test as it came after being without success for more than 69 overs despite bowling well. “I didn’t mind the way I was bowling previously. We have to bowl badly to learn from it. And I wasn’t bowling badly. I beat the edges so many times,” Steyn said. “Sometimes you need a soft dismissal to get going and then you can take wickets off good balls, by turning the momentum towards you.” — PTI |
Oz eye win after England crumble
Melbourne, December 28 The partisan Victorian crowd basked in the glow of an Australia fight-back led by Lyon, who took five wickets to become only the sixth Australian offspinner to claim 100 Test victims. He joins the likes of Hugh Trumble who took 141 wickets from 32 Tests over 100 years ago and most recently Ashley Mallett, who finished with 132 from 38. "It hasn't really sunk in yet," Lyon, 26, said of the milestone after helping Australia skittle England's second innings for 179. "It's fantastic and amazing to be honest. It seemed like a long way away when I first started but lucky enough to get there and no one can take them off me," Lyon said. Australia need 201 for victory with all 10 wickets in hand on day four after openers David Warner and Chris Rogers added 30 without loss by stumps. Lyon's 5-50 haul was the perfect response after he was dropped before the last Ashes series in Australia, deemed not good enough to be chosen ahead of Xavier Doherty. His redemption now appears complete. Lyon began the day batting in tandem with Brad Haddin adding 40 priceless runs to Australia's first innings total, whittling away England's first innings lead down to a meagre 51. Lyon's average of 23 when batting at number 11 is the highest in Tests for those who have played at least 20 innings. His day ended on an even higher note as he took the key wicket of Kevin Pietersen for 49, when the batsman slogged to Ryan Harris at long off. It was his fourth five-wicket haul in Tests, but the first against England in a series where the plaudits have justly been shared by the pacemen on both sides. Wily Lyon kept the pressure on England when the quicks took a breather and now has 16 wickets in the series at an average of 26.93 with an economy rate of just 2.82 per over. — Reuters Scoreboard England first innings 255 Australia first innings 204 England second innings Cook lbw b Johnson 51 Carberry lbw b Siddle 12 Root run out (Johnson) 15 Pietersen c Harris b Lyon 49 Bell c Johnson b Lyon 0 Stokes c Smith b Lyon 19 Bairstow c Haddin b Johnson 21 Bresnan b Lyon 0 Broad c Clarke b Lyon 0 Anderson not out 1 Panesar lbw b Johnson 0 Extras (b 5, lb 6) 11 Total (all out; 61 overs) 179 Fall of wickets: 1-65 2-86 3-86 4-87 5-131 6-173 7-174 8-174 9-179 10-179 Bowling Harris 10-1-34-0 Johnson 15-5-25-3 Lyon 17-3-50-5 Siddle 15-6-46-1 Watson 4-2-13-0 Australia second innings Rogers not out 18 Warner not out 12 Extras (0) 0 Total (0 wickets; 8 overs) 30 Bowling Anderson 3-1-5-0 Broad 3-0-16-0 Panesar 1-0-4-0 Stokes 1-0-5-0 |
Bravo quits New Zealand tour for personal reasons
Wellington, December 28 The left-hander, whose career-best 218 was pivotal in saving the first Test for the West Indies, scored 14 when the West Indies won the first ODI in Auckland on Boxing Day by two wickets. It was their first taste of success in New Zealand after losing the three-Test series 2-0. The second of five ODIs is in Napier on Sunday. Bravo will not be replaced in the West Indies squad for the remaining four ODIs with star batsman Chris Gayle expected to join the squad in time for the two Twenty20 matches. Gayle is currently in Sydney recovering from a hamstring injury. Although it was another unconvincing display with the bat in Auckland, the run-friendly McLean Park wicket in Napier offers the West Indies top order the chance to spend long spells in the middle on Sunday. — Agencies |
Lanka pull off thrilling win vs Pak
Abu dhabi, december 28 Chandimal finished with 64 not out off 70 balls and added a match-turning 40 runs for the ninth wicket with Ajantha Mendis (19 not out) to see Sri Lanka through with two balls to spare. Mendis hit the winning boundary and smashed one of the two sixes in Umar Gul's penultimate over which cost Pakistan 15 runs and the match. Chandimal hit his only boundary to reach fifty before hitting a six off Gul to clinch an unlikely win after Sri Lanka had wobbled at 195-8, derailed by Junaid Khan (3-31) and Saeed Ajmal (2-43). Sri Lanka, who chased down a 285-run target in their second one-day win in Dubai, were cruising along at 113-1 after Kusal Perera (47) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (45) gave them a brisk start of 75. Perera was aggressive right from the word go, hitting four sixes and three boundaries in his 40-ball knock, but was trapped leg-before by Mohammad Hafeez after he attempted a reverse sweep. When on 31, Dilshan completed 8,000 one-day runs, becoming the sixth Sri Lankan to achieve the milestone. But Sri Lanka then lost three quick wickets in the space of just 24 runs. Brief scores: Pakistan 232 (Misbah 51, Hafeez 41; malinga 4/57); Sri Lanka 235/8 (Chandimal 64, Perera 47; Junaid 3/31). — PTI |

Lahiri’s charge continues
Chandigarh, December 28 “I am thrilled with my effort today. I capitalised on both the par-fives and also started well as I converted my longest putt in six months, a 30-footer for birdie on the second hole. This is my best 18-hole score at the RCGC and I am quite confident going into the final round now,” said Lahiri who overcame an upset stomach in the third round to display flawless golf. Chiragh Kumar, who also shot 65 in the third round on the tough Royal Calcutta Golf Course, moved into second place at 11-under-par, 205. “I have been playing well and I will just look to play to my potential in the final round as Anirban has the ability to shoot very low scores and is a tough contender,” said Chiragh, who trails the leader by three strokes. Players’ revolt, on-court success both hog limelight
New Delhi, December 28 In a dramatic move, 11 top players presented a united front against the All India Tennis Association (AITA) to bring about changes in the way the game is being governed and forced the national tennis body agree to some of their demands. Getting the Davis Cup support staff changed was a big victory for the players but the most surprising part was that the revolt was led by Somdev, who was known just for his dogged persistence on the tennis courts. The affable player showed that his fighting skills were not restricted to just the courts and if needed, he can extend his fighting arena. The revolt did not stop even after improvement in the Davis Cup playing conditions for the players but culminated in the formation of a players' association, Indian Tennis Players Association (ITPA). The factions within the AITA too helped the players as its vice-president Karti P Chidambaram supported their cause. Somdev's on-court performance just added to his reputation as he worked his way to top-100 after beginning the year below 600. Having overcome his shoulder injury, Somdev was at his usual fighting best as he recorded impressive wins over several top-100 and top-50 players on the ATP circuit. — Agencies |
