Panchkula, January 1
New Year celebrations turned sour when a gunman of a senior Punjab-cadre IAS officer was critically injured in a gunshot fired from his service weapon in the temple during a New Year party at the 5 Degrees restaurant in Vatika, Sector 5, Panchkula, in the wee hours today. The victim, Jaipal, was accompanying the officer's son, a partner in the restaurant, to the party when the incident took place, the police said.

Woman constable hit, dragged on bonnet; 2 held
Chandigarh, January 1
The start of New Year brought a harrowing time to a woman constable of the UT traffic police who was hit, dragged onto the bonnet of a Zen car and then slapped by a youth in Mani Majra late last night. The woman constable, Sonia Dhankar, was returning home with another woman constable, Poonam, after duty on New Year's Eve when the incident occurred.

Policeman held on molestation charge
Chandigarh, January 1
A constable with the Haryana Police was arrested for allegedly molesting and teasing a girl in a prominent Hotel in Sector 26 last night. The police arrested Constable Pardeep, a resident of Baganwal village in Bhiwani district in Haryana, on a complaint of the girl.

The BJP's strong comeback by wining two key posts in the Municipal Corporation (MC) has left Congress leaders worried. The Congress defeat on the two seat of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor is expected to force the party to mull over a strategy for damage control.

Chandigarh MP Pawan Kumar Bansal and outgoing Mayor Subhash Chawla during the counting of votes. After winning the Mayoral post, the results of elections to the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, that went against the Congress, led to unrest among the Congress and nominated councillors who were seen rushing to Congress MP Pawan Kumar Bansal while the election process was on, to register their surprise and to discuss what went wrong leading to their defeat on the two posts.

Applications invited for Vayoshrestha Samman awards
Chandigarh, January 1
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, New Delhi, has instituted 13 categories of the Vayoshrestha Samman award and the Centre has invited two nominations (maximum) under each category. The Social Welfare Department, Chandigarh Administration, has invited applications from deserving individuals and institutions from among the public for the Vayoshrestha Samman awards to be given on the occasion of international day of the elderly to be celebrated on October 1, to be forwarded to the Centre.

The District Red Cross Society distributed blankets among jhuggi dwellers here today. Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman of the District Red Cross Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu, gave away the blankets to the needy at the Badmajra jhuggi colony and an adjoining colony. NSS camp concludes
The NSS Special Camp at KBDAV-7 ended on a high note on Wednesday with NSS volunteers pledging to support causes of the community and guarding their thought process. The valedictory function commenced with the felicitation of the chief guest, Bikram Singh Rana, State Liaison Officer, Chandigarh. Bikram Singh Rana addressed the NSS volunteers and insisted on individual rectification and transformation.

Professors get best paper award
Professor Sarwar Beg and Professor Preetkawal Kaur, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University, recently bagged the best paper award at the annual meeting of the 65th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC). The annual meeting was held in New Delhi recently. Sarwar Beg, a UGC-meritorious research fellow at the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, got selected among 250 scientists in the technical section of pharmaceutical analysis and quality assurance for his research work entitled, development and validation of a RP-HPLC method for estimation of Nevirapine employing analytical quality by design (QbD).

One person was killed and one injured in two road accidents here today. The police said the deceased was identified as Suresh Kumar (22) of Balongi.
