Youth killed in road mishap
Mohali, January 1 As per reports, Suresh, who was riding a motorcycle, was trying to cross a divider in the industrial area here when he fell and was run over by a truck. The police said the driver of the truck fled the spot after the accident and the vehicle was impounded. The police has registered a case against the truck driver in this regard. In the second incident, Gaurav Kumar sustained injuries when the car in which he was travelling in hit with an electric pole near Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan, Sohana. Reports said he was trying to avoid a stray animal on the road when he lost control of the vehicle. |

Tennis meet from January 6
Chandigarh, January 1 Jai Singh Gill, president, CLTA, stated that highly ranked boys and girls from 23 countries will visit Chandigarh for participating in this prestigious tournament. Participants from United States of America, France, Great Britain, Uzbekistan, Russia, Canada and Australia will take part in the tournament. The main draw for each of the two events for boys and girls consists of 32 players, of which 20 will be given entry as per their ITF ranking, 8 from among the qualifiers in the qualifying matches, and 4 will be given wild card entries by the tournament committee. The qualifying matches for this event will be played on January 4 and January 5. All matches will be played on synthetic courts of CLTA. The semi-finals and finals will be played on the centre courts. CLTA conducts the highest level of national as well as international junior tournaments in India, as part of its policy for development of tennis among younger players. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has allotted ITF juniors tennis tournaments to Chandigarh every year since 1989. Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association officials said the forthcoming tournament is a great opportunity for young players in the country, especially the trainees of CLTA Junior Development Programme, to show their mettle against world-class competition. ITF Juniors Tournament in Chandigarh has been upgraded from grade-5 to grade-4 and further to a grade-3 tournament in the circuit of International Tennis Federation. |
City ace shuttler Akshay has it in him
Chandigarh, January 1 Akshay Jasrotia (17), a left handed badminton player, was picked from a government school and after getting coaching, is now one of the best in City Beautiful. With 3 open nationals, 4 school nationals and a title of state championship in boys (U-17) category for two consecutive years in his kitty, the ace shuttler is moving towards his aim, ‘to play for India’. His maturity in game was spotted during the recently concluded inter-school badminton championship for boys. He was also a member of national badminton championship concluded in Chandigarh last month. The ace player with his smash-power, placement of feather-shuttle, high-stance and strong foot work, amazed every one. “I am happy with my performance being a natural lefty; I dodge my opponents easily. It’s just a start and I am really eager to play for my nation,” said Jasrotia. “It’s all because of the guidance of my coaches and parents that I have attained this much. I hope they will continue to shower their blessings so that I can attain big in the world of badminton,” added Akshay. He is presently taking his training at the Badminton Hall of Panjab University under the guidance of coach Surinder Mahajan. In future he plans to win a medal in the national level tourney. |
Players selected for cricket coaching camp
Chandigarh, January 1 The selected players include Nitin Ranga, Abhishek, Sarthak, Sachin Syal, Jaspal Singh, Pranav Vashishth, Akshit Budhiraja, Siddharth Bakshi, Shubham Yadav, Darmaan Singh Rawat, Rohit and Mohd. Altmash Humza Aalam. The selected players will report at the venue in cricket dress on January 5 at 9 am with their cricket kit. 3 spots are still vacant the coaching. It will be filled after the winter vacations. Interested candidates can still contact centre officials. |
