Inspector’s Murder
Ex-cop, girlfriend guilty
Quantum of sentence to be pronounced today

Chandigarh, December 3
Six months after UT police Inspector Sucha Singh was murdered in Sector 17, the court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal today convicted the accused couple, dismissed UT constable Basant Kumar and his girlfriend Sarita, of the crime. The court held the two guilty of murder under Section 302 of the IPC. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced tomorrow. The case has been decided through a speedy trial.

City bids tearful adieu to Pinki
Chandigarh, December 3
Amid a heavy presence of the police, city residents, including a large number of villagers from Palsora, gathered at the cremation ground in Sector 25 to bid a teary adieu to 11-year-old Pinki, whose body was found in a sack in a jungle in Sector 52 on December 1. With the UT police still clueless about the accused, the area residents served a two-day ultimatum on the police to solve the case.

Table revised house tax rates, MC told 
Chandigarh, December 3
The UT Administration has told the municipal corporation to table the proposed house tax rates before the house tax committee. The MC was allegedly sitting over a draft report, prepared by a special committee of MC officials to increase the existing rates of house tax by 20 times for the next financial year (2014-15). At present, the tax on residential property is Re 1 per sq yard annually.

3-year-old sodomised
Panchkula, December 3
A three-year-old boy was allegedly sodomised by a 13-year-old boy in the Gandhi Colony in the Mansa Devi Complex here this evening. The victim’s parents today submitted a complaint to the police following which a case was registered under Section 377 (sodomy) at the Mansa Devi police station. The police have arrested the accused, who will be sent to a juvenile home.

The Punjab Government's state-level function to mark World Disability Day turned out to be nothing less than a farce when the special guests, the invited disabled persons, were treated as an "ignored lot" by the organisers at the venue, Shivalik Public School, Phase VI, here today. A differently abled guest, Shingara Singh, an employee, alleged that a policeman, deputed at the main gate of the school, didn't allow his vehicle to enter the premises.

Guidelines, space standards nowhere in civic body records
Chandigarh, December 3
The entrance to the Rose Garden has no provision for the disabled. The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is not even aware of the guidelines and space standards for creating a barrier-free environment for the disabled (Disability Act 1966) if the response of the civic body on a RTI query is an indication.

Air Force Station, High Grounds, observed the World AIDS Day here today with a rally being organised to create awareness among the local population about AIDS and HIV.

400 BSNL phones go dead

Nearly 400 BSNL telephones are lying dead in the Phase IX industrial area and parts of Sector 81 here allegedly due to damage caused to cables during the digging work undertaken by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA).

UT cuts down on non-plan budget
Chandigarh, December 3
The Union Government has turned down the demand of the UT Administration wherein it had sought 10 per cent additional budget under the non-plan head for the current financial year. The Centre has also directed the Administration to manage its projects with the available resources.

UT Admn plans more bypasses
Chandigarh, December 3
To ease out traffic on the national highway, which causes traffic jams during the peak hours on the internal roads of the city, the UT Administration is working on the possibility of constructing bypasses at various junctions. Revealing the plan of the administration, UT Finance Secretary VK Singh said today that the project to construct a road from Panchkula to Chandigarh with an overbridge near the railway station was in the pipeline. He said another western bypass has been planned near Patiala-ki-Rao where land is available with the administration.

Non-teaching staff end stir

After the Punjab Government agreed to consider the demands of the SSA/RMSA Non-Teaching Employees Union soon, members of the union called off their strike today. Ashish Kumar, general secretary of the union, said DGSE Rahul Kumar assured that their demands would be met soon. “We will join our duties tomorrow,” he said Ashish. — TNS

Two persons died in separate incidents. In the first incident, Manpreet Kaur (14) of Stabgarh died by consuming overdose of some expired medicine here last evening.

155 models on display at exhibition

A four-day 39th State Science, Mathematics and Environment Exhibition began here today at the State Institute of Education (SIE), Sector 32. As many as 155 models are being displayed by the students of Chandigarh schools at the exhibition. Organised by the SIE in collaboration with the NCERT, the exhibition aimed at popularising science among children, teachers and general public.

Santhiya tops PGI MD/MS entrance exam

The results of the PGIMER MD/MS entrance exam, conducted on December 1 for a total of 670 seats of various postgraduate courses, were declared late on Monday evening. The competition remained high with less difference in the scores of three toppers in the exam.

House show activities
The junior section of St Stephen’s School was abuzz with House Show activities. On Tuesday, the Jupiter House Show started with seeking the blessings of the Almighty. The show was based on the theme, “Modernisation”. The students vividly explained how modernisation without moral values is not complete. Plays highlighted human values like care and respect for elders. With their dances, they showed that it is important to be stress free.

Billiards and Snooker meet
Tanurag, Rajwinder lift titles

Chandigarh, December 3
In the final match of junior snooker, Tanurag Gautam outclassed Pulkit Bagla 3-0 to win the title of 29th Chandigarh State Billiards and Snooker Championship.
In the final match of junior billiards Rajwinder managed to win over top seeded Chandan Gulati 2-0. Chandan missed a pot at 53 in the first frame from where Rajwinder finished the frame winning 60-53.

Sandeep wins three titles

The sports meet of State Bank of India concluded today at the Sports Complex, Sector 46, here today. Sandeep from Hissar won 400 m, 800 m and 1,500 m races. In the final of 100m race, Nipkesh Birkian of Amritsar attained first spot while in the 200m race Subhash of Rohtak was the winner.

St Kabir School beat St Xavier’s in basketball

In the ongoing St Kabir Basketball Trophy for boys (U-17) and girls (U-16), the boy’s team of St Kabir School, Sector 26, defeated St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, 54-28. Garv collected 25 points while Ekteshwar gathered 20 points for St Kabir. Bisaj also contributed in team’s win with 5 points. Sumeet (13 points), Kunal (8 points) and Arshdeep (5 points) scored for for St. Xavier’s.

The Netball team of GGDSD College, Sector 32, won the Panjab University Inter-College Netball Championship for men. In the final match of the meet, the winning team beat SGGS College, Sector 26, 11-8.

The team of BBPUCC, Balachaur, beat DAV College, Abohar, 34-18 while Malwa College, Samrala beat GKSM Government College, Tanda, 32-12.

Ashmita, Ningshi post victory in badminton 
Chandigarh, December 3
Ashmita Chaliha and Ningshi of Assam beat Manidipa Dey and Esha Ghosh of West Bengal 21-13 and 21-13, during the match of 38th Junior National Badminton Championship, being held here today. The winning pair defeated the rivals 21-16, 15-21 and 21-19. In another match, Riya Mookerjee and Tapaswini Samantroy from Uttar Pradesh beat Akanshi Baliyan and Akshita Bhandari of Delhi.
