Chief Justice of High Court stresses on separate wings

Chandigarh, December 3
Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Sanjay Kishan Kaul today emphasised on the need to have trained functionaries in the field of criminal justice system, police, prison and judiciary.

He was speaking on the concluding day of a two-day international seminar on ‘Penal Reforms and Restorative Justice’ organised by the Institute of Correctional Administration (ICA), Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Social Action Foundation for Equity (SAFE), here, today.

During his valedictory address, the Chief Justice said there was a need to have separate wings for law and order and investigation.

The main agenda items for the seminar were restorative justice in the penal estate; and wholly environmentally sustainable estates cognisant of sustaining restorative and therapeutic values.

Dr Brian Steels, Senior Research Fellow, and Dr Dot Goulding, Senior Research Fellow from Curtin University, Australia, were the key resource persons for the seminar. Anil Kumar, IAS, Home Secretary, Chandigarh Administration-cum-Director, ICA, Haryana minister Randeep Singh Surjewala and Dr Upneet Lalli, Deputy Director, ICA, were among those present. — TNS

Chandigarh, December 3
In the final match of junior snooker, Tanurag Gautam outclassed Pulkit Bagla 3-0 to win the title of 29th Chandigarh State Billiards and Snooker Championship.

In the final match of junior billiards Rajwinder managed to win over top seeded Chandan Gulati 2-0. Chandan missed a pot at 53 in the first frame from where Rajwinder finished the frame winning 60-53. Balwinder made 12 break to win the frame and Ranveer of St Stephens School, Sector-45, Chandigarh finished third. In the senior snooker, top seeded Rajat Khaneja overcome Arif Akhtar in a thrilling encounter, to win 2-1.

In senior billiards Arif Akhtar of Indian Oil outclassed Manav Dhawan in straight frames 2-0. The Sr. cueist was seen in good touch with soft play. Controlling the balls at will Arif made breaks of 28, 35 and 44 to easily win 100-41, 100-28.

Sandeep wins three titles

The sports meet of State Bank of India concluded today at the Sports Complex, Sector 46, here today. Sandeep from Hissar won 400 m, 800 m and 1,500 m races. In the final of 100m race, Nipkesh Birkian of Amritsar attained first spot while in the 200m race Subhash of Rohtak was the winner.

St Kabir School beat St Xavier’s in basketball

In the ongoing St Kabir Basketball Trophy for boys (U-17) and girls (U-16), the boy’s team of St Kabir School, Sector 26, defeated St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, 54-28. Garv collected 25 points while Ekteshwar gathered 20 points for St Kabir. Bisaj also contributed in team’s win with 5 points. Sumeet (13 points), Kunal (8 points) and Arshdeep (5 points) scored for for St. Xavier’s.

In the second match, the team of St Stephen’s School went down against New Public School, Sector 18, 10-37. Harsh (15 points) and Amit (9 points) scripted the team’s win while Harmandeep (3 points) and Kailash (3 points) score their share for Stephen’s.

GGDSD win netball meet

The Netball team of GGDSD College, Sector 32, won the Panjab University Inter-College Netball Championship for men. In the final match of the meet, the winning team beat SGGS College, Sector 26, 11-8. 

The team of Panjab University Campus defeated DAV College, Sector 10, 34-29. In the semi-finals, the GGDSD College beat PU Campus 22-21 while the SGGS College Chandigarh beat DAV College.

The winning pair defeated the rivals 21-16, 15-21 and 21-19. In another match, Riya Mookerjee and Tapaswini Samantroy from Uttar Pradesh beat Akanshi Baliyan and Akshita Bhandari of Delhi.
