Girl abducted, released after an hour
Jalandhar, October 22 Shocked at the incident, Inderpal raised an alarm and informed about the incident to the staff of the department who then called up at the police control room. The Rama Mandi police was immediately sounded who came to the campus and swung into action. SHO Vimal Kant said he was told that one of the two boys was Lovey of Bodla village in Dasuya, residing close to the girl’s house, while the other one could not be identified. He said the police parties were sent in various directions to nab the boys and build pressure on their families for the surrender. About an hour later, the boys left the girl at Pathankot Chowk where from she reached her home safely, said the cops. The police however could not apprehend the boys. “Parents of Lovey have ensured us that they would make him surrender. We are on constant watch,” said the SHO. “The police is gathering clues to the incident on the basis of calls and message details from the mobile phones of the boys and the girl. On the complaint of Inderpal and the statement of the girl, we have lodged a case of
kidnapping against the two boys. We have registered a case under Sections 323, 341, 365 and 34 of the IPC,” he said. |

Jalandhar, October 22 Talking to The Tribune, JAC members Gursharan Singh, Ravindra Dhir and Raj Kumar Sharma said the proposed dharna would be unprecedented as businessmen were
very agitated over the imposition of new taxes every other day. Meanwhile, the JAC members held meeting with various businessmen groups to mobilise
their representatives for the dharna. One such meeting of Battery Association was also held on Ladowali road. Addressing the association representatives, local Congress leader Rajinder Beri flayed Badal government for imposing one after another taxes on business community. Ravindra Dhir said the protesters would first gather at Milap Chowk from where they would reach outside sales tax office near BMC Chowk
in the shape of a protest march and there they would stage dharna from 11 am to 1 pm in support of their demands of withdrawing advance tax. In the meantime, Jalandhar Chamber of Industries and Commerce also
decided to participate in the proposed dharna, the call for which was given
by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Industrialists and Traders, a conglomerate of over
80 city-based associations of businessmen. The chamber chairman, Narinder Singh Sehgal, confirmed that the members of the chamber would enthusiastically take part in the proposed dharna against advance tax, property tax and delay in value added tax (VAT) refund. Actually some representatives of JAC, including industrialist Gursharan Singh met with those of the chamber a few days ago urging them to participate in the dharna so that the city businessmen might put up a joint agitation. e-district project mired in technical flaws
Kapurthala, October 22 Since an applicant has to get the entire set of his original copies of attached documents scanned, the waiting time has increased leading to more inconvenience for the applicants. Also, the Suwidha centre had to restrict the number of applicants for about a dozen out of the total 47 services which require more scanning work, with many turned away after being issued an advance token for the next day. Currently, the project aims at increased public convenience by allowing acceptance of online application, reducing requirement of visits by
applicants to just one time that too with prior appointment, online receipt of documents, paperless work, online tracking of the status of documents by the applicants as well as officers concerned, increased accountability of dealing staff, passing on files to backend officials concerned through intranet in real time for processing, clearance of files even from home on a
holiday or after working hours, more transparency with all documents uploaded on web, easy authentication of certificates by passport authorities, visa centres,
educational institutes and other offices, complete elimination of the role of touts, better
record keeping and maintenance of digital records of all documents for subsequent reference. The e-district project being carried out by the Department of Governance Reforms is also
aiming to decentralise the working of Suwidha by going to Gram Suwidha Centres instead of
tehsil-level Suwidha Centre system prevailing as of now, so that the rush of applicants
gets cut down at one centre and the services are available at doorstep, said ADC GS Khehra, handling the
project in Kapurthala. Khehra said a lot of effort had gone into giving a practical shape to the project, training of staff to go
paperless, making them habitual of retrieving scanned data in the form of PDF files
from their inbox, giving remarks on files online and using digital signatures instead of scribbling with pen. He added that nearly 35 out of 47 services had reached a near perfection stage but still there
were some specially related to the Revenue Department, old age pension, etc for which softwares or the whole
system was required to be updated as per the legal framework. With regard to the
infrastructural requirements and technical support, the ADC said he was in constant touch with the principal secretary and director of the department. “We have weekly review meetings in
district with the staff and keep sending the feedback to Chandigarh regularly,” he said. Services on e-district
Some of the services
being discharged in partly e-district mode at Kapurthala Suwidha Centre include residence certificate, caste certificate, old age pension, dependent children pension, disability pension, ration card| issuance and
modifications, rural area certificate, countersigning and attestation of documents, marriage certificates, birth/death registration, issuance of licence for sale of seeds,
fertilizers, issuance and renewal of arms licence and RTI. Tasks achieved

Meet the first ‘whistle-blower’ from Pakistan
Jalandhar, October 22 She started her hockey career in 2001. Apart from hockey, she also represented her country in cycling and soccer. She had also played baseball up to national level in her country. Finally, she got an opportunity to umpire the qualifying round of the Asia Hockey Cup in Singapore in 2012. Later, she umpired the Asia Challenge Cup in Bangkok. Recently, the International Hockey Federation approved her as the international hockey umpire thus making her the first-ever women international umpire from Pakistan. “Initially, I didn’t like umpiring. It is bit awkward for a player who played for so many years to blow a whistle on the field. I was baffled about taking umpiring as a second career option but my family and seniors motivated me to go ahead and encash this opportunity seriously,” said Binish. She gave the entire credit for her success to her family who always encouraged and supported her.She has 10 siblings including 8 sisters and 2 brothers. It was only when she got training from international umpires like Haider Rasool and Rashid Bhatt from Pakistan, that she recovered her talent as an umpire. Later, she went on getting umpiring offers from all over the world. So far, she had umpired three international tournaments, the third one being Surjit Hockey going on in the city. Now, since she is settled in her career, what are her marriage plans? “ Oh, that is a top priority now. I would like to get married to a businessman who can understand me and my commitment towards my profession. But unfortunately, may be because of the scare of my hockey stick, nobody has approached me so far,” she said. People here in Punjab are very nice and welcoming. “I love the city and its people. Aapme aur Humme kuch zyaada farq nahi hai. I really cherish Punjabi ‘kadhi’ and ‘aaloo methi ki sabzi.’ This is something, I am really going to miss on my way back home,” said Binish. She also loves the Indian masalas and planning to take some special spices like biryani masala, chat masala and garm masala from India. She also plans to buy lot of Indian sarees and jewellery for her sisters and close friends. “We are having so many ‘Dawats’ here that so far we didn’t get the time to shop. But, very soon, we are going to do that,” she said. |

martyrs.” The society president, Tejinder Singh Manku, its general secretary Lalit Sharma and its another active representative Satwinder Singh Laddi said they got success in constructing park by removing dump with active efforts of area councillor Bhagwant Rai Prabhakar, who had also raised the issue in several meetings of the Municipal Corporation (MC) house. Talking to The Tribune, Prabhakar said he had taken Mayor Sunil Jyoti into confidence before shifting the dump site to another place at By-pass. “I also called Punjab Safai Karamcharis Union president Chandan Grewal to the site to give him first-hand experience of the problem being faced by devotees, students and other residents due to improper dump site. On seeing the ground-level situation, he also favoured its shifting immediately” said the president. |
