Hockey enthusiasts may not be able to see women hockey players in action in the forthcoming 30th Surjit Hockey Tournament scheduled to be held from October 9 to 17 at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium here due to the clash of dates with the National Women Hockey Selection camp, which will also be held on the same days in New Delhi.

The camp has been organised by Hockey India for the selection of Indian women hockey team to play in the forthcoming international matches.

"It is a bit unfortunate that we may not see our women players participating in this year's tournament. However, if the Pakistan women's team gets the visa, we may ask various states to send their teams from the players available during that time. But presently, no women matches have been planned for the tournament," said LR Nayyar, working president of the Surjit Hockey Society, Jalandhar.

Two teams have been placed in the knockout stage, while 11 teams, including two teams from Pakistan (subject to visa approval), have directly been seeded into the quarter final league. Like every year, this year too, all matches will be played in the floodlights and there would be no entry fee for the spectators.

BPL family struggles to make both ends meet
Aparna Banerji
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, September 22
Rekha (14) and Raman (16) live along with their 80-year-old visually impaired grandfather Gurdev Singh and grandmother Kartar Kaur in a ramshackle house in the middle of the winding streets of Chuhrwali village near Jandu Singha.

Chuhrwali village has about 33 to 34 BPL families. Among these, the family of Gurdev Singh, the entire village agrees, is the poorest. But thanks to poor awareness of various schemes among the poor, the family is currently getting barely Rs 1,000 as collective pension and 20 kg of wheat and some kerosene per month under the atta dal scheme.

Barring these, the family is entirely dependent on villagers, panchayat and Rekha’s school for everyday needs, from ration to clothes to the fixing of their fallen roof.

The family (like most others in the village) do not even have a BPL card.

Their rundown home is ridden with dangerous walls and roofs, which seem to be on the brink of falling. During the current monsoon, the roof of one of their rooms fell. But local Chitra NGO chipped in with help.

The girls’ grandmother Kartar Kaur says, “I had three sons. All three died. Within months of their father’s death, their mother also abandoned them and went away. We have heard now she has also died. I have been bringing them up since the girls were two to three years old. Earlier, I had strength and walked to people’s home to ask for help. But I am too old now to do even that.”

While Rekha studies at Janta High School at Jandu Singha, her sister is pursuing a diploma course at a local college. The school staff has also arranged the elder sister’s free course so that she may not have to pay for education.

While the girls’ father died about 15 years ago, they had also been paying their water and electricity bills since then, but the new benevolent sarpanch recently waived their dues and this month was the first ever when they did not have to pay their water and electricity bills.

Sarpanch Gurjeet Singh says, “We do as much as we can to provide them with help. Their bills have also been waived. The present panchayat is also planning to mobilise efforts to get the various schemes for the BPL families to be applied for them. Currently, there is very little awareness on the issue.”

Activists KS Nagra and SK Kapoor of the NGO have been associated with the family for the past one year. “They have provided Rs 18,000 (Rs 5,000 of it was donated by one of Rekha’s school teachers Balwinder Kaur) for the repair of the fallen roof of one of their rooms. They also provide help through ration, clothes and other needful things donated to the family from time to time.”

Master Sukhwinder Singh, who retired as Principal from Rekha’s school, is also one of the contributors to the family.

The BPL and SC/BC schemes which aren’t being availed by the family despite being needy are RSBY under which medical help worth Rs 30,000 per year is free and Indira Awas Yojna, which provides repair and construction grants to poor/SC families.

Though then IG Zonal Hardip Singh Dhillon and DIG PS Gill had announced a reward of Rs two lakh to provide information about the culprits, it turned out to be a futile exercise.

Moreover, the Phagwara police could not solve the mystery behind the murder of ASI Gurdev Singh even after six months.

The ASI was shot dead near the Haweli on the national highway on March 31 this year.

The accused, Palwinder Singh, alias Pinda, and Rajinder Singh, alias Mintoo, are still at large. Notably, two of the four accused-- NRI Tarwinder Singh and Pushpinder Singh- were arrested on April 2, but the remaining two are still at large even after six months.

The police has also failed to solve the blind murder of a Nepali youth. He was allegedly killed by his brother and sister-in-law on April 5 this year and none of the killers could be arrested.

The police has also failed to solve two cases of female foeticide. Two infants were found dead at an abandoned places near Chachoki and Khangurra villages early this year, but the police could not nab the culprits.

It seems as if the police is busy in guarding the politicians belonging to the ruling party besides participating in several social functions. Gursewak Singh Brar, SP, Phagwara, said he would act swiftly to solve all the pending cases.
