Property tax comes into effect

With the Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil giving his assent to the ordinance for the amendment of the Punjab Municipal Act 1911 and the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act 1976, imposition of property tax in the state has taken effect retrospectively from April 1, 2013. The new local tax, which replaces house tax, will come as a huge relief to the cash-starved Municipal Corporation which, going by the rough estimates, hopes to mop up an additional Rs 150 crore revenue during the current financial year.

Six more test positive for dengue
Ludhiana, September 22
Six more patients have tested positive for dengue in the city. Three patients belong to Ludhiana district while the remaining three are from other districts.

Double murder case cracked; wife, paramour arrested
Ludhiana, September 22
Accused Krishan Lal and Paramjit Kaur (faces covered) in police custody in Ludhiana on Sunday. With the arrest of a woman and her paramour, the city police has claimed to have cracked the murder case of two men, who were poisoned to death. The accused were identified as Paramjit Kaur (32), of Jamalpur village near Phagwara and her paramour Kashmiri Lal(30).

Cops, organisations join hands to make region drugs free 
Mandi Ahmedgarh, Sept 22
Office-bearers and activists of social, religious and constitutional organisations joined hands with the Gill Circle police to make the region free of drugs. An oath was taken to put an end to the growing menace of drugs during a drug de-addiction camp, jointly organised by the police and management of the Doctor Kotnis Health and  Education Center at Gurwara Manji Sahib Alamgir, Ludhiana, on Saturday afternoon.

Madan Mohan Mittal, Health Minister, Punjab, has assured to upgrade facilities at the local community health centre, being run by Punjab Health Systems Corporations.

The Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertaking (CICU) has recently announced the first mega engineering expo, “International Engineering Technology and Sourcing Show (IETSS)-2013”, at the Glada Ground. The expo will be held from November 29 to December 2.

Book on collection of stories released

A book by Ajmer Sidhu was released by the Punjabi Sahit Akademi at the Punjabi Bhawan today. The book - ‘Khushk Akh Da Khaab’ - is a collection of stories. This is the third book of stories by the author.

“Sab shehar ek jaise hain” was the answer of Nida Fazli, famous Hindi and Urdu poet and writer, when asked about Ludhiana. He said: “In Bombay there are seven Bombays, Bombay of Bollywood, Bombay of slums, Bombay of Politicans and so on. So, almost all cities are alike in one way or the other.”

Cultural-literary fest ends at PCTE

‘Koshish’ - a cultural and literary festival - culminated at the PCTE. Around 2,700 students of the college participated in 26 different cultural and literary events during the festival.

Funds released to renovate hostels
Ludhiana September 22
Addressing the long-pending demand of students, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) released funds for the renovation of various hostels. The directorate of students’ welfare at the PAU deposited the funds with the engineering unit of the PAU.

Principal Prem Singh Bajaj was honoured with the 'Akademi Sarav-Ucch Sanman Fellowship' by the Punjabi Sahit Akademi for his dedicated efforts for the uplift of the Punjabi literature and the work towards the maintenance of a research centre and a library at the Punjabi Bhawan.

Encroachers invade Bhadaur House

It seems that Bhadaur House and encroachments get along well. The vacant space underneath the incomplete Lakkar bridge flyover is serving as a parking lot for shopkeepers of Caliber Plaza. Footpaths have been encroached upon and sacks of garments can be spotted lying on pavements.

Hike in duty drawback cheers garment exporters

Garment exporters have hailed the recent hike in duty drawback rates. The revised all-industry rates came into effect yesterday. The drawback rates for cotton, manmade and silk have been increased to 7.6 per cent, 10.2 per cent and 7.8 per cent, respectively, for 2013-14.

Teachers take to road, seek regularisation

Fed up with false promises, members of the SSA/RMSA/CSS unions today took out a rally. The have been urging the state government to regularise their services. The teachers lamented that despite working honestly, the government did not acknowledge their hard work.

PPCB raids electroplating units
Ludhiana, September 22
The Punjab Pollution Control Board has found anomalies in 29 electroplating units. Raids were conducted in Ludhiana and Jalandhar.

5 booked for kidnapping woman
Ludhiana, September 22
The police has booked five persons for kidnapping a woman. The victim, identified as Maninder Kaur, is still missing and efforts are on to trace her. Inderjeet Singh, a resident of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, reported to the police that his daughter tied the knot with Gurpreet Singh in 2005 and after the marriage, her husband and in-laws started harassing her for dowry.

5 arrested with contraband

The police has arrested five persons and recovered a huge quantity of poppy husk and habit-forming drugs from them.
