A peep into Punjab
It’s like an interesting story-telling session wherein the subject of the matter is not fiction, but facts that are harsh to come to terms with; truth that’s bitter, biting realities that people have chosen to put behind closed doors. Our story-teller, Rajmohan Gandhi, re-opens these doors of history with the belief, “History shouldn’t haunt but inform.” In the process, he dedicated three years of his life to his 10th book, Punjab: A History from Aurangzeb to Mountbatten, which commences from the death of the erstwhile ruler and culminates in 1947. It is also of a time-zone when Punjab was united in every which way, to be precise when the fragmented Punjab of India and Pakistan were one.
What inspired him to write a book on the history of Punjab is his growing up days in Delhi and his association with Punjabis. But taking out facts from the gory past also meant mirroring the ‘awfully gone wrong’ decisions taken by those in authority then , bringing into focus those influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, who was the author’s grandfather. “Facts too can get subjective if you let your prejudice creep in. My book doesn’t aim at proving or attesting any story but is a compilation of my research on Punjab,” says the celebrated author who in Chandigarh to release his book at an event organised by publisher Aleph Book Company and Aitihasiki, Panjab University History Department Alumni Association. As for his extensive research, he alluded to the literature available at University of Illinois, US, and conducted a string of interviews in Delhi as well as Lahore. “We knew stories about how people got killed in the riots of 1947 but there is more to it. Tales of how people on both sides of the border saved, hid and helped each other reach safe places are equally heart-rending.” With a focus on the tumultuous history of Punjab, the book takes under its umbrella the very popular kingdom of Ranjit Singh and his equally notorious successors and also of the British Empire. “Punjab might have had its share of revolutionaries but the fact remains that it was the most pro-empire state of the country; it also ironical that Punjab suffered the maximum post Independence.” It’s not for nothing that Punjabis favoured the British; Rajmohan cites the reasons, “They brought the concepts of justice and administration to India. Also the landlords flourished under their rule; there wasn’t any reason for Punjabis to be anti-empire.” Besides politics, the book also highlights the socio-economic-cultural aspects of Punjab. “It’s the Punjabi language that united people in the undivided Punjab. The language had its origin even before Sikhism came into being, dating back to the era of Baba Farid,” says Gandhi, who has also referred to the teachings of Sikh Gurus and Sufi saints to define Punjabiyat in his book. Once known for its fertility and prosperity, Punjab could have saved itself from the divide and rule policy of the British, “If it had relied on its local leaders.” Only if one could travel back in time!
Book worth
Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has a lot of history books to his credit. His previous book, A Take of Two Revolts: India 1857 and The American Civil War is an account of two civil wars that took place in far away continents at the same time. He now plans to write a book about Gopal Das Desai, a Gujarati who contributed immensely to the national movement much before Independence.

Rising above all
Soul for food is what Stuart, Alan, Tony and Mark hankered after and that’s what they have achieved! In Chandigarh, for Seagram’s 100 Pipers’ tribute to U2, Elevation, that this band is called, talks about their musical journey.
Starting with the name…Elevation is their favourite track so they go by the name! And why cover for a living band? “First we adore them and second, they have given enough for us to play,” says Alan. Starting form Liverpool, England, they have reached far and wide; survived together for a long twelve years. Belonging to the old school, they have had their share of hardwork, done music, cut albums individually and been having fun together! Do they have to compromise on their originality when they play the songs of others? “Well, there are different ways to look at it. It’s not like we have been just doing this. We have had our fair share of musical journey and together as Elevation we have got loads of work and appreciation,” says Stuart. Together they have plans to make original music and are looking forward to cut an album soon too, which would be under the name AMPCOIL Guru! “Everything is in place, we just need time to sit back and manage now,” they echo. In the times of ‘instant’ fame, Elevation members are not for anything ‘instant’. Alan’s been doing music since fourteen years of age, Tony runs his own musical company; Mark has been in business from as far back as 1979 and Stuart, who resembles the iconic Bono, is also known for his painting as well as glass etchings. “Times belong to ‘reality shows’ today; be it idol, star, chef, everyone is looking for that ‘instant’ fame. But then that stardom is momentary as well,” says Mark. One couldn’t help but ask — how would it be to face the U2? “We have thought about it. Guess it would be great if they could see us playing and share their take on what works and what not,” says Mark. Been to Bangalore and Delhi already, Elevation has enjoyed their first few gigs in India. “We have had a blast in Bangalore as we played in rather heavy rain,” they share. It amused me to witness people dancing in the rain, enjoying the show. India has amazed them so far, “It’s going to be a life-changing journey for you,” they were warned. From the very civil British traffic to the Indian chaos on roads, they are quite amazed. As they are by the hospitality that Indians have to offer! “Life is moving too fast. We have been touched by the warmth Indians have shown towards us,” says Tony. If eye-catching Indian panorama has impressed Alan, he is also struck by the vast diversity that India has to offer, “You can see the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor; yet everything seems in balance,” they wonder. Stuart, being the most India savvy (he came travelling ten years back), cannot help but opine the difference the decade has brought to India. “Whole cityscapes have changed,” says the musician who has toured Agra, Kashmir, Trivandrum and more. Aroma of spices to the array of food that India has to offer to the numerous cultural sites, this gang is enjoying everything on their Indian stint. While also taking note of the sight and sounds our country has to offer, “Who knows we might belt out an original post our India trip,” says Stuart. Why not! mona@tribunemail.com

Long way to go
Actor Arjun Kapoor, who will be seen in Gunday next, opens up about his work, competition and the benefits of being from a film background. My journey
My journey has been good so far. I am glad that people have accepted me and I’m getting good work. I was shooting for Ali Abbas Zafar and Abhishek Varman’s films simultaneously. Initially, it was a little tough switching between the two characters. Being on a film set gives me a sense of solace and peace. So, I don’t mind hectic schedules. Past experiences
My prior experience as an assistant director allows me to trust people on a film set easily because I know that they’re doing their job to the best of their abilities. I just concentrate on my performance and don’t worry about whether I’m looking good and other details. I am more aware about the role of every crew member and hence have greater faith in them. When you’re from a film background, you are not overawed by stardom and are more confident about yourself. Plus, you get a certain amount of respect because of your father's reputation. But you have to work on is to create your own name and niche. Different heroines
Working with Priyanka Chopra was a fabulous experience. I know her for a while, so we share a comfortable equation. As far as heroines are concerned, it is a director’s prerogative on who suits the female part best. I’m glad to be paired with a different heroine in every film of mine. It brings about a sense of freshness. Carving a niche
It is a good thing that there are so many young actors in the industry. Producers have more options to choose from for their films. There are more scripts written for younger heroes these days. As far as competition is concerned, I am way too young in the industry to feel insecure. I first need to establish some kind of standing for myself before I can worry about the others. I am just a year-and-a-half old in Bollywood, there is a long way to go. Film buff
I am a total film buff and love watching all kinds of films. Eating good food and watching films is what I love to do on my days off. It’s hard to pick favourites but I love Saif Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan and Govinda.

Men unite for a cause
Yuvraj Singh has joined hands with Farhan Akhtar and Atul Kasbekar for a social cause. The cricketer is going to recite the poem of MARD for the activists, in Punjabi. Men Against Rape and Discrimination (MARD), is a social initiative designed to create awareness amongst men and to instil gender equality and respect towards women.
The Delhi Rape incident was a rude shock for the entire country. Farhan teamed up with the creative director of JWT and Atul Kasbekar of Bling and brainstormed and came up with a platform called MARD. They feel that change in law and order cannot curb the increasing crime against women. Rather an idea needs to be planted which will bring about a larger change. Farhan Akhtar and Atul Kasbekar have vowed to spread awareness about gender inequality and rape through various mediums and languages. Known lyricist Javed has penned down the MARD poem which is being translated in various languages. After Sachin Tendulkar recited the poem in Marathi, playback singer Shaan in Bengali and Mahesh Baabu in Telegu, this time, it is Yuvraj Singh who was more than willing to come on board to spread the message in Punjabi. The activists want to reach out to as many people possible with this thought and believe that with the cultural diversity in India, the only way to do this would be to break through language barriers. Yuvraj Singh says, "I am very glad to be associated with MARD. I think every person needs to do their bit."

A timeless tale
The closing ceremony of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has some good news for us. Anup Singh’s Qissa won the NETPAC Award for the Best Asian Film.
Set amidst the ethnic cleansing and general chaos that accompanied India’s partition in 1947, this sweeping drama has Irrfan Khan playing a Sikh who attempts to forge a new life for his family while keeping their true identities a secret. Beautiful, timeless, touching the deepest of human impulses, Qissa carries the spirit of a great folk tale. Although it's set in a particular time and place, it is both deeper and broader than any one moment or place. According to the jury that comprised the likes of Jay Jeon (Korea), Intishal Al Timimi (Abu Dhabi) and Freddie Wong (Hong Kong), the film won the award for its sensitive portrayal of the issues of identity and displacement that affect people not only in India, but in all parts of the world. Qissa was the only film of the Indian package to have a world premiere at TIFF. Others had already been played elsewhere. The award paves the way for the film to go confidently to the world markets. Besides Irrfan, the film also boasts a host of talented artistes like Tisca Chopra, Tillotama Shome and Rasika Dugal in significant roles.

Sporty notes
Sports and music go along well. Here are some of the popular tracks associated with sporting events … Manpriya Singh
A sport is just like cinema — there’s drama, suspense and climax. So many theatrical elements involved ensure that there’s all the more reason for a background score. Sports songs make sure that time spent at the stadiums turns out more entertaining than award nights put together. Ricky Martin’s La Copa De La Vida immediately conjures up images of football and the accompanying hysteria. The song titled Cup Of Life became the official song of FIFA World Cup in France and still deserves a credit for maximum recall value. Shakira’s Waka Waka further wedded the mainstream performers with international sporting events. The song, also titled as This Time For Africa, is based on traditional African soldiers’ song and made it to the official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album. While the tracks that actually get played at the stadiums are different from the songs with sports as their theme, almost invariably, music and games come together. Hall of fame
The power ballad was performed by the British rock band Queen. We Are The Champions hasn’t gone out of circulation since it first came out in 1977 and has become the anthem for all the sporting victories. Queen deserves to be mentioned twice — for also their single We Will Rock You. There’s the single Basketball by Kurtis Blow — the song that pretty much sounds self-explanatory and was used in the opening video and as part of the soundtrack in the video game, NBA. And how can we forget Roundball Rock? The theme song by John Tesh was used for the NBA too is considered an amazing track. Young take
“The songs that they play at the stadiums or any sporting events are generally the current chartbusters. Nevertheless, there are so many sporting theme racks that are very inspiring and hummable,” opines Devina Minhas, a hospitality student who doesn’t mind switching onto Don’t Stop Believing by Journey every once in a while. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Every drop matters
Satish Narula Watering the plants is the biggest worry of the gardener as there is shortage and also restrictions. The problem is aggravated when the landscaping is done in bigger areas, especially the societies, colonies, institutions, farmhouses, clubs, marriage places et al. The planting plan here has to be judicious, keeping a score of considerations in mind; watering being the biggest. There are a few ways of conserving water like fixing priorities depending upon the plant species, using drip irrigation, sprinklers, foggers etc. Each method has its merits and demerits. There are various complications in the usage of various methods too. However, such things are part of gardens operations, but can we reduce or minimise watering needs of the plants? Yes, we can do that too by the use of mulches, stones, grasses and even by using certain fast-growing vegetation that protects and provides shade. One big helping factor that is gardener-friendly is use of such plants that have minimum watering requirements. But do these plants have the same attraction factor, that is, good flowering? Yes, they do. Let us discuss about some of these plants. Most of the shrubs have minimum watering needs. The need for watering is further reduced when these are planted in groups. Some of these have almost no watering requirement; they keep standing and growing even with minimum application. Kaner is one such plant. The shrub is fast-growing and has a variegated version too. The plant bears flowers almost all the year round. It is available in red, pink and white blooms. Now a dwarf version of Kaner is available that is suitable for narrow beds or even central road verge. Otherwise too, shrubs provide opportunity to clip them to any suitable size. Yellow Kaner is also popular with large garden owners. It is normally allowed to grow to a height of ten to 12 feet. Calliandra is another hardy shrub that can tolerate the worst of conditions, including pollution assaults. The shrub stands unaffected in scarce water supply conditions and bears attractive puff-ball flowers. Now even dwarf version of this shrub is available that hardly grows three to four feet in height. It is suitable for pot culture too. Like scant water requiring shrubs, there are such trees as well. Most of the trees have deep roots and once these are established, there is hardly any need to apply water. There are also trees that are very suitable for areas where the water-table is deep and the conditions are almost dry. Erythrina indica is one such tree. The tree sheds leaves in summer and even when it is leafless, it bears deep scarlet flowers. Lahura is another such tree that bears flowers under almost drought conditions. It comes in two shades, red and orange. The flowers are borne even in the middle of the tree. (The author is a senior PAU horticulturist) |

As the show goes on...
Popular show, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain has taken a leap yet again and the role of Pihu, played by Fenil Umrigar, will now see her as a college going girl. Meanwhile, Fenil tells us about how her character will be the central character of this long-running love story of a middle-aged couple. How does it feel like to play the role of Pihu and be a part of a super hit show? I am elated to be a part of Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, which is a flagship show and I am super excited about my role. With the leap, Pihu becomes the central character, so I have a lot on my platter. Like Pihu, I am a very honest and hardworking person. The show will feature a lot of parenting issues and challenges and the audiance will get a chance to witness Ram tackling ‘parenting issues’, which will be the crux of the storyline this time. How did you bag the offer? I recieved a call from the production house over two months ago. They said that they had seen me in the footage of Best Friends Forever and wanted me to audition for the role of Pihu. Since I could not go to Mumbai then, I sent a cd of my audition and though I was not very hopeful of being selected, but when the person on the other side congratulated me, I was on cloud nine. How does it feel like to be shooting with Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar? Sakshi has always been my role model. She is one of the finest actors on television and I wish I had 10 per cent of the talent that she has. I have shot a couple of scenes with her, where I am talking to her while she is in coma. Though we have not really spoken much with each other, she extends a smile whenever she sees me and that’s very warm gesture. As for Ram, I did my first shot with him the day I came to sign the contract and I was extremely nervous then. But Ram is a complete sweetheart as have assured me of my abilities to do the role. He also helped me while I was rehearsing my lines and I had to give quite a few retakes, but he was very accommodating. He is a perfectionist. What is the character of Pihu in the show? Like any other college girl, Pihu is sexy, smart and shrewd. She is the apple of her parents’ eyes as loves her parents and siblings to a degree beyond expression. But like every teenager, she will also have a slightly grey shade—she is a naughty and an arrogant prankster. It is a very believable character and is someone, who you will be able to relate to. The USP of the show was the romance between a middle-aged couple, do you think that the show is divulging from its theme? Yes. But the show must go on and it can’t be focused on one thing all through the day. For a daily soap to thrive, the producers need to look for different angles. For instance, in Kyunkii... the show was only about Tulsi and Mihir to begin with, but the plot changed over the time and we saw more issues come to the fore. So in BALH, the storyline is running on the same pattern of change and the focus will now shift on Ram and Priya’s children.
Stirring drama & commotion
In the up and coming episodes of the show Pyar Ka Dard Hai…, while Pankhuri is hopeful of Adi being bailed, Anuj tells her that because his parents were coming to see Revathy, he should stay away that evening. Also, because Rubel gets angry, Pankhuri feels hurt. Meanwhile, Mano fixes the marriage and engagement for the next day. Later at night, Pankhuri catches Revathy fleeing from the house, as she does not want to get married because she is a widow.
