Members of Nagar Nigam Swachata Samiti today demonstrated in the premises of Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) in pursuance of their demand for appointment of nullah employees throughout the year. President of the samiti Madan Valmiki said:''Around 50 nullah employees had been hired by the DMC in the month of June to clean the clogged drains of the city. These employees are thus retained for six to eight months.''

This year their term was retained for just three months, which is not fair. We demand that they should be hired for the whole year.'' He said since such seasonal sanitation workers could not be hired for more than three months at a stretch as per the rule, they must be given the intermittent break of a few days after every three months,''he further added. ''Each of the employees is given Rs 250 on a daily basis for the work. After the end of their term, they struggle to get work outside. As the DMC has severe shortage of sanitation workers, the corporation can hire these workers full time for the entire year and engage them for various activities related to sanitation,'' he said.

Senior Health Officer RK Singh assured them that their matter would be placed in the ensuing DMC board meeting for approval. However, Valmiki said the association would also give a memorandum to Mukhya Nagar Adhikari on this issue.
