Photography evidence helping agencies in Kedarnath search operations
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 10
The recovery of bodies of pilgrims, months after the mid-June calamity from the higher reaches of Kedarnath, may be taking time due to the inclement weather, but the photography evidence of the presence of bodies provided by the agencies engaged in rescue operations is proving helpful in the operation.

“Time and time again, inclement weather played a spoilsport and the search for bodies in higher reaches could only be launched now. The photography of the area is proving helpful. We were told about the presence of 50 bodies around both sides of the ridge, located in the higher reaches of Kedarnath,” said Om Prakash, Principal Secretary, Home Affairs.

He said at that time, saving lives was paramount, but efforts were also launched to help pinpoint the number of bodies lying in the higher reaches. “Even the AHL helicopter had undertaken low flights, but it is difficult to carry operation at 14,000 feet due to inclement weather,” said Om Prakash.

He said that due to the speed of the Mandakini river, the teams had been unable to remove the bodies lying at Rambara that was completely wiped out. In fact after planning to remove the debris from Kedarnath in August, the task continues to remain unaccomplished due to weather.

“The equipment with the GPR system and laser machines could not be transported to Kedarnath as these can only be airlifted through MI-26 which has not been able to take a single flight. Even the teams from the GSI and ASI have not been able to make proper assessment for want of equipment,” said Om Prakash.

He said that the government has marked an empty space near the Shani temple in Kedarnath for the deposition of the rubble and muck that would eventually be removed with the help of heavy machines. He said taking lessons from the tragedy, the government would restrict the flow of pilgrims and even make compulsory health examination of pilgrims, “Those afflicted with high BP, sugar, asthma and other diseases that could prove detrimental for the individuals if they took the strenuous trek to Kedarnath would not be allowed to move further than Guptkashi,” said Om Prakash.

The government would also make it mandatory for the pilgrims to carry dry ration in case of an emergency-like situation.

Meanwhile, a high-altitude expert police team continued its search drive in Kedarnath valley today. It was led by DIG GS Martolia. The drive was carried out in higher reaches to recover the bodies of the victims of the mid-June natural disaster. The team comprised mountaineers, ATS commandos, civil police and local porters. During the search mission, the team camped at Garudchatti, Gunjyalgiri, Devishn and Gaumkara on different days. It searched for bodies on the mountain peaks with 14,500-ft height. They also trekked for more than 25 km and recovered 185 bodies and cremated them .

The team had to struggle for food and water, as helicopter could not reach due to bad weather. The entire search mission was carried out in areas which comes under the revenue police.

Public drinking on roadsides goes unchecked
Gaurav Talwar/TNS

Dehradun, September 10
The apathetic attitude of the police has lead to the worsening of the problem of consumption of alcohol publicly in the city, particularly old Mussoorie road, which turns into an “open air bar'” following sunset everyday.

One can spot people enjoying alcohol, turning their cars into moving bars, once you cross Rajpur tri-junction on the old Mussoorie road.

Locals allege that the police pays no attention to their woes as, with the sunset, roadside eateries on upper Rajpur Road allow people to have alcohol publicly.

''We have complained to the police a number of times. It increases patrolling for a few days, but the situation goes back to square one with boozers resurfacing on roadsides enjoying their evenings with liquor,'' said Lavanya, a resident of Rajpur.

Though the police claims that it conducts frequent raids to stop illegal consumption of alcohol publicly on roadsides, the claims do not seem to materialise on the ground.

According to another resident, the ambience of the old Mussoorie road is not suitable for women and children beyond 6 pm due to public drinking.

The scene is more or less the same on every turn in the old Mussoorie road as one can find cars parked on roadsides and people enjoying their drinks without any fear.

Roadside drinking is not just confined to old Mussoorie road or locality. It can also be witnessed on roads at many places in the city where roadside eatery counters have sprung up, becoming hot spots for boozers.

SP ( City) Jagdish Chandra, said: “I will speak to the circle officer concerned and police officials and direct them to increase patrolling in the area.”

Landour Cantt Board complains of construction without permission
Tribune News Service

Mussoorie, September 10
The Landour Cantoment Board officials in Mussoorie have registered a complaint to the police and demanded to stop the ongoing construction at Dahlia Bank cottage being done by the owner without any prior permission.

According to sources, the Cantt Board officials in a complaint filed at Mussoorie police station dated 17th August have pleaded that one Sanjay Narang was continuing with the construction at the cottage called Dahlia Bank without any prior permission for the board despite the clear direction of the High Court of maintaining the status quo in the matter.

The officials in the complaint have said that court in its direction had said that if Sanjay Narang was interested in construction work 50 metres away from the government land (A-1) then he should seek prior permission from the concerned authorities, but he was continuing the construction work without any permission whatsoever.

It is also said in the complaint to the police that the plaster work and other construction activities were on illegally at the site with impunity.

When contacted the police, it seems, was shying away from any action considering the high profile nature of the case.

The investigating officer in the case said that he had received the complaint but as the case was pending in the court their hands were tied.

When contacted the vice-president, Cantonment Board, CP Baloni, said that if the perpetrator was not following the court orders the authorities should file a contempt case against Sanjay Narang and try to stop the alleged illegal work through court.

When contacted the secretary of Sanjay Narang informed The Tribune that they have submitted the reply of the complaint to the police and as they were legally right in the matter, the construction work would carry on without any hindrance.
