Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 10
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi today said the role of the residents of unauthorized and JJ clusters has been substantial in the development that has taken place in the past 15 years in the city. He said that Delhi has welcomed each and every person coming to the city as it has been able to develop with their hard work.

While slamming the Opposition for stating expenditure on the Food Security Scheme a waste, Rahul said the government would not hesitate in making such expenditure on the poor. "Money spent on providing meals to the poor cannot be called 'wastage' of financial resources," he said, while speaking at a function after distributing ownership rights to the residents of 45 re-settlement colonies.

"We have brought a number of legislation in the past 10 years which have changed the development paradigm. The aim of the legislations was to ensure rights to the people. Apart from providing Right to Food, the government has given Right to Information, Employment Guarantees and Right to Education," he said.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the government faced a number of difficulties due to the existing multiplicity of authorities in the past 15 years. "The city government would approach Gandhi on taking over as Prime Minister, to demand redressal of difficulties arising due to multiplicity of authorities," she said.

In view of the coming assembly elections, the Delhi Government has initiated the process to grant ownership rights in 45 re-settlement colonies which will benefit 2.5 lakh households in 45 re-settlement colonies housing around 15 lakh people.

Besides him, three councillors of the NCP - Dharamveer Awana, imsy Kasana, Phoolkali Narwaal - also joined the party.

While Bidhuri expressed gratitude at the welcome extended to him by the party, Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said that his coming into the BJP had not only strengthened the party, but would also dampen the spirits of the Congress.

Bidhuri joined the BJP in presence of its national president Rajnath Singh, former BJP national president and Delhi election in charge Nitin Gadkari, Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly V.K. Malhotra, former Delhi Health Minister Dr. Harshvardhan, and former Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta.

While urging the partymen to keep up the fight against the Congress, he said that leaders like Bidhuri, who had a huge credibility, were an asset to any party and would prove so for the BJP.

Gadkari said that this is just the beginning and many other leaders from different parties who want Delhi residents to get rid of the Congress "misrule" would be joining hands with the BJP in days to come.

One person commits suicide in every 4 mins
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 10
At a time when in every four minutes a person commits suicide in India, majority of such incidents can be prevented with timely intervention and convincing a person with suicidal tendencies through dialogue and counselling, say mental health experts in the national Capital.

In this regard "Let's talk it out," an initiative to raise social awareness on the psychological aspects of suicide and ways to prevent it by Cosmos Institute of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences (CIMBS) has been announced in observance of World-Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. This year's theme is "Stigma: A major Barrier to Suicide Prevention".

Talking about their campaign Director, CIMBS Dr. Sunil Mittal, said "Worldwide experience and our own in India has shown that many lives are saved when those at risk or actively contemplating suicide or those who have attempted suicide are identified, engaged in dialogue and provided help in time. In order to do this it is important to consider suicide as a mental health priority and talk about it as we do about other health problems and not keep it shrouded in shame and stigma."

"It is not just one person who dies, those around, whether family or loved ones are traumatised forever as something inside them dies too," said Dr Mittal.

Studies suggest that for every person who commits suicide, between 10 and 20 persons attempt suicide. "It is a myth that those who attempt suicide do not do so again. The motives behind an attempted suicide could vary," said Dr. Sameer Kalani, consultant psychiatrist and co-coordinator, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, CIMBS.

The National Crimes Record Bureau data for 2012 shows that 1, 35,445 Indians committed suicide in 2012. This translates to 371 suicides per day or one suicide in every four minutes. Almost twice as many men commit suicide than women and most of the persons who kill themselves are young.

Academicians condemn govt’s stand against Prof Yadav
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 10
Coming in support of member of UGC Prof Yogendra Yadav, academicians from across the country today condemned the show-cause notice issued to him by the Human Resource and Development Ministry (HRD) as yet another instance of "arm-twisting" of the Congress-led Central government to crush dissenting voices and urged for its immediate withdrawal.

The notice was served on September 4 to Prof Yadav to explain within seven days why he should not be removed from his post citing "conflict of interest" due to his political allegiance to the Aam Aadmi Party.

In a petition from over 200 educators cutting across the board sent to HRD Minister M. Mangapati Pallam Raju, they have expressed shock on the ministry's stand and view it as one inspired from the fact that the political scientist has pointed out irregularities in the conduct of commission meetings, putting some officials in an uncomfortable situation.

This indicates the government's "intolerance" towards voices of free opinion, they observed in the petition signed by academicians and legal activists from DU, JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia, AMU, IIT-Delhi, apart from several others.

According to them, the decision stems from the fact that Prof. Yadav have objected on matters of national importance, including the introduction of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme, bypassing of the recommendations of the UGC committee in the notification of the API scheme and the decision to set up a inter-university centre on teacher education in a technological university in Kakinda, the Lok Sabha constituency of the HRD Minister that does not even have a department of education.

Prof Yadav will submit the official reply tomorrow.

Dera Sacha Sauda launches cleanliness drive
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 10
Early this morning the followers of the Dera Sacha Sauda took up a cleanliness drive from Jantar Mantar. Flagging off the event Guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan urged people to take measures to enforce behaviour change and keeping the environment clean by shunning polythene.

Another noticeable thing was that the volunteers were going around asking the citizenry to fill up and sign written pledges to maintain cleanliness. "Worn out clothes could be easily and inexpensively converted into bags and they would be an extremely safe and eco-friendly option to carry shopping stuff," he said.

"Even if the authorities were making all out efforts to maintain cleanliness, the tendency of society was such that all their efforts would soon go to naught as we are in the habit of littering without thinking. Such irresponsible thinking would definitely reflect badly on the part of the authorities," he said.
