School student crushed, 16 buses damaged
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 3
An incident of a 14-year-old student who was run over allegedly by a Delhi Transport Corporation bus in Govindpuri this afternoon, triggered a protest that led to the damage of as many as 16 buses.

The victim has been identified as Harish Sagar, who was a resident of Sangam Vihar. According to protesters, Sagar was going to his school in Tughlakabad Extension when the accident took place on a stretch located at the intersection of the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and Ravi Das Road.

Sagar studied in class IX at Government School number 3. A student of that school claimed that at about 12.45 pm when Sagar was crossing the road, the DTC bus ran over him. "The driver did not apply the brakes even after running over him," said the student.

Eyewitnesses claimed that as locals started gathering at the accident site, the driver left the bus and fled. The passengers of the bus immediately left after him. The driver identified by the police as Zuber Khan (30) was later arrested. A case under sections pertaining to rash driving and causing death by negligence was registered at the Govindpuri police station.

Traffic police personnel alerted the police control room (PCR) about the accident. A PCR vehicle rushed the victim to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Trauma Centre in south Delhi, where he was declared dead.

"We could see the boy's head that had been crushed under a wheel of the bus. The crowd pelted the bus with stones and broke the windshield and windows," said eyewitnesses.

The bus was the first of 16 buses that were damaged by a mob, who went on the rampage for about two hours. Eyewitnesses claimed that buses passing by both the sides of Ravi Das Road were stopped, evacuated and then damaged. A stretch of about two kilometres was littered with shards of glass. The buses that were damaged belonged to the DTC.

While Ravidas Road remained the centre of violence, some buses were also damaged near Batra Hospital, which is located close to Sagar's house.

The police managed to control the crowd by about 3 pm. The staff from the Sangam Vihar and Govindpuri police stations were deployed at the protest sites to prevent further incidents.

Shocker! They steal even transformer!
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 3
Two thieves were arrested by the Delhi police for stealing a 100 KVA distribution transformer weighing around 700 kg in East Delhi's Mandoli area, said a senior BSES official. The duo posing as BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) officials had brought along a heavy duty crane and a truck to carry the transformer.

"The operation had been planned to the last detail that even the drivers of the two vehicles had no inkling that they were participating in a theft," he said.

The thieves had even managed to disconnect the transformer and placed it on the truck with the help of the crane.

Even though they were posing as discom officials, the local BYPL officials finding something amiss alerted the head office.

"Since they had not authorised removal of any transformer in the area, senior operation and management team rushed to the spot, but by the time the officials reached, the duo had succeeded in dismantling and removing the transformer," he said.

The BYPL officials alerted the police and with help of the residents of the area mounted a search for the truck.

It was found parked at a distance with the duo sitting in the truck planning their next move.

They were immediately apprehended and handed over to the police.

"Normally drug addicts and unscrupulous elements steal fencing around the transformer or drain its oil and sell it to make a quick buck.

“But this was the first time that an entire transformer - that too of 100 KVA - was stolen," said the BSES official.

New Delhi, September 3
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployed at the Rohini Paschim Metro station handed over a handbag containing about Rs 95,000 to a woman, who had inadvertently left it at an X-ray machine there this morning.

According to a CISF official, at 10.43 am, sub-inspector Vashisht Narain of the CISF saw a woman's handbag at the X-ray machine. The machine is located at the entrance of the Rohini Paschim Metro station. People entering any Metro station are instructed to pass their baggage through the X-ray machines.

"The bag was again scanned and an image of jewellery and currency notes came up on the monitor of the machine. The matter was reported to the station controller of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. In his presence, the bag was checked and Rs 95,700 in cash and artificial jewellery were found inside it," said CISF Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commandant Hemendra Singh.

The CISF examined the CCTV camera footage of the station and saw a woman had forgotten to collect her bag from the output roller of the X-ray machine. At 11 am, a woman named Prabha Kumari, who is a resident of Rohini, informed the CISF that she forgot to collect her bag from the machine.

"She said that she owns a shop at City Mall in Rohini. She is in the business of artificial jewellery. She was carrying cash to make a payment to a party. The bag containing Rs 95,700 and artificial jewellery was handed over to her," said Hemendra.

Sack CM, BJP gives memo to LG
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 3
A memorandum was submitted to Lt Governor Najeeb Jung by the Leader of the Opposition VK Malhotra today for dismissal of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The party took out a procession from the assembly secretariat to the LG's office, demanding immediate sacking of Dikshit. Delhi BJP senior leaders, including state BJP president Vijay Goel, handed over the memorandum to the LG in which they gave a detailed account of the case in which the court ordered filing of the FIR against Dikshit.

The orders were made in the wake of her alleged misuse of government funds for a 2008 pre-assembly poll campaign.

"There seems to be a conspiracy of silence as even four days after the court order, neither the police got any court order nor we have been able to get the same. There are attempts to shield the Chief Minister," Goel said.

"The continuance of the Chief Minister under the present circumstances is against the ethos of democracy. The people have lost faith in the Congress completely. The Chief Minister's refusal to demit the office on her own is nothing but a fraud," he charged.

A city court had on Saturday ordered registration of an FIR against Dikshit on a complaint filed by Vijender Gupta in which he alleged that she had misused government funds to the tune of Rs 22.56 crore in an advertisement campaign ahead of the 2008 assembly polls.

Kirron Kher may cross swords with CM

New Delhi, September 3
In the ensuing assembly election in Delhi, the BJP is considering fielding a number of women candidates. Among them Bollywood actor Kirron Kher's name is in the run up to contest against Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit from the Gole Market assembly constituency, sources said.

She was one of the speakers in a rally held at Ramlila Grounds last month where she had also given indication that she might be one of the contestants in the assembly elections in Delhi.

According to the sources, the BJP is getting a survey done in the Gole Market assembly constituency in order to know people's opinion about the actor's candidature as a majority of the voters in this constituency are government employees who want a serious candidate. In the last election, the BJP had fielded Vijay Jolly who had lost the seat.

Being a government employee-dominant constituency, the issues of corruption, scandals and inflation can go against Dikshit. Besides, Kejriwal can also make a dent in the vote bank of the Congress. A few months ago, it was rumoured in the political circles that Dikshit could change her constituency. After analyzing all these factors, the BJP has thought that Kirron Kher can prove a strong candidate in comparison to others who are seeking ticket from Gole Market, the sources said.

Apart from Kher, the other women activists who are seeking tickets are former Mayor Arti Mehra who had contested the last election from Malviya Nagar, former Mayor Rajni Abbi, Rekha Gupta, Sarita Chaudhary, Shikha Rai and Vani Tripathi, the sources said.

A 40-year-old widow alleged that she was “sexually assaulted” by an acquaintance in the Mahipalpur area, south Delhi, last night.

The accused has been identified as Anil (53), who was arrested today on the grounds of sexually assaulting the woman. “There are rumours that he is a Delhi Police constable. A case under Sections 376 (sexual assault) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy), IPC, has been registered. The two accused and the woman know one another, added the officer.
