I-T teams swoop down on city jewellers
Jammu, September 4 I-T sleuths conducted checks at shops and residences of the traders at Channi Himmat for allege tax evasion over a long time. The team, accompanied by the police, also seized records and other assets to ascertain the amount of tax evasion despite several warnings issued to them. Sources said a team of I-T officials raided the shop of Silverlines Jewellers at Jain Bazaar. Simultaneously, another team raided shops including Kanaya Jewellers, Roshan Jewellers, Talla Jewellers, Vijay Sarad Jewellers, Krishna and Raman Suri Jewellers. However, none of the senior officers from the I-T department was available for comment despite repeated attempts. Sources in the IT department said that close watch being maintained on all these jewellers due to their heavy expenditure on advertisements and promotional activities. "It is being verified whether these jewellers had highlighted proper expenses or inflated it to conceal income. The scrutiny of documents is on and the picture will become clear over the next few days," sources maintained. It may be mentioned here that in September last year, the Income Tax Department had exposed tax evasion worth crores by five known jewellers in Jammu. Meanwhile, Swarnkar Jewellers Association (SJA) and Sarafa Bazar Association (SBA) have given a call for two-day shutdown in protest against the raids. They said they had already faced heavy losses due to the Kishtwar violence and the curfew imposed in Jammu. "Instead of giving us compensation, the government deliberately harassing us," they alleged. They claimed they had cleared pending income tax dues in March last. |

Further, the respective state governments were also requested to properly monitor the lifting and utilisation of foodgrain on a quarterly basis and furnish the requisite information to the Ministry. The Ministry had also issued instructions that the state governments which had failed to submit the Utilisation Certificate (UC) for the foodgrain during 2012-13 are directed to furnish the same immediately to get the sanction of new allocation of foodgrain by October 31. Further, the state government was also requested to intimate the end use of the foodgrain allocated under the Integrated Child Development Services scheme along with the figures and the Utilisation Certificate. Heavy rain that lashed the region since August 13 destroyed property worth crores. Nearly 3,000 thousand houses suffered damages and it will take months before the damaged civic infrastructure is restored and repaired.
