Monsoon session, I-Day
New Delhi, August 4 Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) S. B. S. Tyagi said that the caretakers of the buildings have been asked to check each vehicle that is parked inside the building premises and outside. Unidentified vehicles parked near any building around Parliament may be dangerous. This has been duly notified in the advisory issued by the police, Tyagi said. The advisory was issued to six buildings, including Rail Bhawan, RBI, Gurudwara Rakab Ganj and All India Radio. The police said every person entering the buildings should be "searched and frisked thoroughly". The police have also beefed up security in view of the Independence Day celebrations. "The advisory has been issued keeping in mind the fact that the anti-national elements always try to carry out an attack at Parliament or in its vicinity when the House is in session or when Independence Day is nearing, " said a police official. The advisory has not only asked the security officials of these buildings to control and regulate the entry of people but has also asked them to either close or guard any doors and windows which open towards the Parliament House. Besides, the advisory says, "All the areas in and outside the buildings around Parliament House should be checked regularly for any suspicious objects. Junk and stranded vehicles should be removed." |

IN FOCUS
New Delhi, August 4 Starting with over 20 children, the initiative was taken by Mehak and Mahika Sharma (siblings), Arundhati Rawat and Rahel Philipose, students of Navy Children School, Chanakyapuri. At present, 12 volunteers are engaged in teaching which has helped nearly 50 children of the nearby NDMC Sangli Mess School. "Once when I and two of my friends were discussing about doing something in leisure time, we toyed with the idea of tutoring children. My mother along with a cousin had started an NGO long back on the similar lines which inspired me. To start with, we tutored children of maids and those living in the workers quarters here," said Mahak. Though they had started it as a pastime during the short-term break of the school, they later decided to continue classes on Tuesday and Thursday throughout the year. In order to accomplish this mission, they sought permission of the Sangli Apartments Resident Welfare Association for holding classes at the common room. They also had to persuade the parents, mostly domestic servants, drivers and daily wage earners. "We have to convince the parents as we tutor their children from nursery to 10th class. Our focus is on mathematics and English apart from other subjects. We have started getting children from the slums also and hold classes in several batches," said Arundhati. The endeavour has not only helped children get free tuition but also enabled their poor parents to be relaxed while they are away at work. Ravi, one of the students, says, "My father is a cook and mother a domestic maid. Both go out to work and return late in the evening. I have been coming here since May 2012." Most of the children, who have been regular in the classes, such as Amar, Bhagwati and Sunny, aim to do well in their studies and hope to earn a comfortable living. It is this mission that has given the four students-turned-tutors a sense of purpose in life. "We wish to pursue such a cause as it gives us a satisfaction. We are encouraging more friends and have started getting volunteers from our school too who are willing to join us," they said. What is more, the message of contributing towards empowering the poor through education has travelled to Mumbai where one of the 12 volunteers is planning to start such classes. His family has recently relocated there. |
Farmers’ procurement price won’t hit: CM
New Delhi, August 4 "The government would continue to procure grain from the farmers at procurement price from time to time and would substantially grant subsidy in order to ensure distribution to people in prescribed quantity," said Dikshit, while speaking at a rally in Rohini Sector-21. Dikshit said that the state government has decided to launch the scheme on August 20. However, it will be operational with effect from September 1, a month before the Assembly elections. Under the scheme, beneficiaries will get wheat at Rs 2 per kg, rice at Rs 3 per kg and coarse grain at Re 1 per kg. Addressing the rally, she said that the government will also allot around 50,000 low-cost houses in next five months. The houses will be allotted to the urban poor under the Rajiv Ratna Awas Yojana the process of which will be held through a draw of lot. The houses will be allotted to the eligible registered urban poor families and residents of JJ clusters. The flats will be provided to the Scheduled Caste families free of charge whereas other eligible families may get a loan. The Union Government has given its permission for the construction of about 68,000 dwelling units in Delhi for EWS, of which only 15,000 flats were constructed. |
DERC to form independent agency to check meters
New Delhi, August 4 "We feel that consumers should have a choice to get their meters tested by an independent agency. The whole process to appoint the agency will be completed within one month," said DERC chairman PD Sudhakar. He said the commission has already invited bid from private and government entities having accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) which functions under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Sudhakar said in case a meter is found to be inaccurate, the cost of carrying out the test will have to be borne by the power distribution company which installed it. But if the meter is found accurate, the consumer will have to pay the fee for testing the meter. "In case a meter is found to be fast running, then the power distribution company concerned will have to adjust the past bills accordingly," said the chairman. At present, consumers have to approach the private power distribution companies for testing of their meters. Consumers also have the option of preferring testing of meters at Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) in Bangalore through the Public Grievance Cell of the Delhi Government. Both the BJP and AAP have been attacking the DERC alleging that most electricity meters in the city run fast. Sudhakar said the DERC has already set aside Rs 50 lakh for facilitating third party testing of meters. The commission has also set aside Rs 20 lakh for the Electricity Consumer Advocacy Centre which will have a panel of lawyers who will assist consumers to take up their grievances with Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum and courts in Delhi. The government on Friday appointed a three-member committee to review status of reforms in the power sector and suggest measures to improve its performance. |
DJB should start amnesty scheme in DDA colonies, LG urged
New Delhi, August 4 Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, said that though the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has excused 100 per cent late payment surcharge under amnesty scheme and even given 30 per cent rebate to those who are paying the outstanding amount but these concessions are not being given to the DDA colonies. Malhotra said that the DJB should implement the amnesty scheme in the DDA colonies. No-objection certificate should be given to those unauthorized colonies developed on the DDA land, so that the development works in these colonies can be taken up. "In view of the fact that there is no clear-cut decision regarding the upkeep and maintenance of boundary walls and common areas in the Group Housing Societies falling under the purview of DDA, there is a strong resentment among the people living in the area. The then Lieutenant Governor in a meeting had taken a decision regarding the maintenance of boundary wall and common areas in all the DDA colonies, but the decision has not been taken up till date," said Malhotra. The legislators appealed for the need to maintain local shopping centres in these areas by the DDA. |
