Cong men clash at Narnaul meeting
Chandigarh, July 30 AICC member and co-in charge of Haryana affairs Asha Kumari along with Pradesh Congress President Phool Chand Mullana witnessed ugly scenes when supporters of Bhiwani-Mahendragarh MP Shruti Chaudhry and former MLA Radhey Sham Sharma (from Nangal Chaudhry constituency) clashed at Narnaul. They were in Narnaul to attend a workers’ meeting where Asha Kumari was seeking a feedback from the party cadre. Supporters of Shruti Chaudhry got angry after they saw the picture of their local MP missing from posters and banners. Agitated supporters reacted sharply when former MLA Sharma made a remark saying that the MP’s mother, Kiran Chaudhry, who is also Haryana’s Revenue and Public Health Minister, had deliberately not sanctioned tubewell connections to about 5,000. “Shruti trailed by 500 votes in the Nangal Chaudhry assembly segment and she will lose the next election by 5,000 votes again for deliberately not clearing the connections of 5,000 families”, Sharma said. Supporters of Haryana Health Minister Rao Narinder Singh too aired their anger by supporting Sharma. At this, Shruti’s supporters got furious and came on to the stage seeking an apology from the former legislator. Security personnel guarding Mullana and Asha Kumari had a tough time controlling the furious mob which was asking Sharma to take back his allegations against Shruti and Kiran Chaudhry of being biased against people of this constituency. It was all commotion thereafter. Mullana and Asha Kumari tried hard to persuade the workers to calm down. While Mullana was speaking, Shruti’s supporters pointed out that her photos were missing from the posters. At this, supporters of Rao Narinder said: “Where is the need for her photo when she is not even here (Shruti is abroad)”, This led to pandemonium and the workers entered a fist fight disrupting proceedings. It may be mentioned that the Congress high command has asked state party in charge Shakeel Ahmed (currently abroad) and Asha Kumari to go and hold workers’ meetings in every district. |
Children refuse to take iron pills in Sirsa
Sirsa, July 30 Nearly 13 schoolchildren were taken ill in Tohana and Fatehabad after taking IFA pills yesterday. Reports received from several villages of Ellenabad and Chopta blocks in Sirsa indicate that parents of the children, particularly those who are members of the school management committees (SMCs), have categorically told principals and headmasters/headmistresses of the schools that they would not allow the IFA tablets to be administered to their children. In many schools, children refused to take the tablets while in some cases, teachers, too, are reluctant to perform this “onerous” job for the fear of inviting parents’ wrath in the event of illness to children. “Our children have refused to come to school, if they are forced to take these pills. Why are the authorities adamant on making our children take these tablets when it is making them ill?” asked Meena, president of the school management committee at a government school in Sirsa. Confirming that schoolchildren in 118 Sirsa villages have refused to take IFA tablets, Civil Surgeon Dr Surender Nain said on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Dr J Ganesan, Ellenabad SDM Prabhjot Singh had called a meeting tomorrow, where he would try to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, J Ganesan has appealed to sarpanches and School Management Committees to cooperate in the implementation of this programme in a letter written to them. Dr Rakesh Gupta, Mission Director of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in Haryana, however, said: “The programme is running successfully in all schools except for around140 out of 8513 schools in the state, the war has already been won. Only a few battles remain, which, I am sure, we will win very soon. In Jind, teachers say no to iron pills
Jind: Many residents of several villages have decided not to let their
children consume the IFA tablets. Members of the Government School Teachers’ Association in Julana block of the district have decided to stop distribution of the tablets in their schools. The villages from where such reports have come in include Nagura, Kandela, Dhamtan, Danoda, Gogaria, Sachakhera, Budhakhera and Julana. 60 students taken ill Hisar village
Hisar: Around 60 schoolchildren at Khairi village were rushed to hospitals in Uklana, Bhuna and Barwala after they complained of nausea, vomiting and other ailments. The staff at the Government High School in Khairi village of the district fled as the enraged parents rushed to the school. Villagers thrashed a health official at the Primary Health Centre after which the police and officials rushed to the spot and controlled the situation. Uklana Congress MLA Naresh Selwal has urged the government to discontinue the drive and find an alternative option to check anaemia among children. 300 calls received on helpline
Chandigarh: More than 300 calls from different districts of Haryana were received on the helpline started by the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). Experts entertained the queries about the iron and folic acid blue tablets. A spokesman of the NRHM said the helpline No 82880-14141 has been started to clarify doubts by the experts on the spot from 9am to 9pm. |
Experts blame ferrous sulphate for side-effects
Sirsa, July 30 Dr Dinesh Khosla, Chairman, Committee for Protection of Child Consumers under the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, said ferrous sulphate was the most toxic iron preparation and was not in circulation these days. He added that ferrous fumarate was a better option as it had least side-effects and better absorbed in the human body. Lal Chand Mittal, a former State Drug Controller in the Food and Drug Administration, Haryana has asked the government to get the IFA tablets checked from a trusted lab. “I am surprised that the health authorities have made no efforts to check whether the IFA tablets comply with the prescribed standards or not. The authorities ought to seal the manufacturer’s raw material and testing record and get the drug tested from the Central Drug Laboratory, Kolkata, or any trusted lab,” said Mittal. “The monograph of ferrous sulphate (iron), as given in the Indian Pharmacopeia (IP), prescribes the maximum limit of some heavy metals in it, as arsenic: 2 particles per million (PPM), copper: 50 PPM, lead: 50 PPM; zinc: 500 PPM, chlorides - 250 PPM; manganese: 0.1 per cent. All these particles are toxic in nature and if they exceed the permissible limits, they can cause trouble,” said Mittal. He said smaller or little-known companies, particularly those manufacturing drugs for the government, hardly perform tests on their raw material for the presence of the highly toxic substances, as normally, they rely on the test conducted by the raw material manufacturers. Dr Rakesh Gupta, Director, National Rural Health Mission, Haryana, however, said the IFA pills had been manufactured exactly as per the specifications given by the World Health Organisation (WHO). He said though he was not a pharmaceutical expert, but the WHO research was based on iron preparation made from ferrous sulphate and not ferrous fumarate. He said ferrous fumarate was relatively costlier and it had its own side effects, though results wise, it is no better than ferrous
sulphate. |
Industry to pay more for HUDA plots
Chandigarh, July 30 Industrialists in Faridabad will have to be pay Rs 10,000 per square metre while those in Panchkula and Bahadurgarh (Sector 12) will pay Rs 7,700, sources told The Tribune. The new rates will be effective for the year 2013-14, sources said. Sources said the rate in Hathin and Rewari would be Rs 1,200 and Rs 2,400, respectively. The rate in Dharuhera would be Rs 3,200 while it would be Rs 1,900 in Hisar and Kurukshetra. The rate in Bhiwani and Panipat would Rs 1,300 and Rs 6,500,respectively. For the areas other than Sector 12 in Bahadurgarh, the new rate would Rs 7,000. The industry has reacted sharply to what it called a "double whammy". "High land costs, a high rate of interest on loans and recession have already hit the industry hard. This hike would make a majority of the industrial units non-viable, asserts Vishnu Goyal, chairman of the Panchkula chapter of the Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI). Besides land cost and recession, other impediments in industrial growth were bureaucratic red-tapism and the law and other situation. The new rate list

Grains for Mid-day Meals
Chandigarh, July 30 that no laxity or delegation of responsibility would be tolerated on complaints over quality. The head office would not hesitate to lodge an FIR against district managers and others for compromising on the quality of grain supplied, if necessary. The foodgrains sent to schools would be jointly inpected by representatives of the FCI, the Elementary Education Department and Hafed to make sure that the quality of wheat and rice conform to standards. Hafed has directed its district managers and centres in charge to personally inspect the stocks before delivery. Making it clear that this responsibility cannot be delegated to any other official, they can associate another official in the inspection. These officials would have to sign a certificate declaring that they have inspected the stocks and verified that these are fit for consumption. The directions lay down that representatives of the Elementary Education Department and Hafed must accompany the trucks at the time of delivery of stocks to various schools to make sure that there is no pilferage or replacement of bags in transit. “We have also told the field staff that no open bags or loose grains should be supplied. These should be in the standard packing of the agencies. Also, the packing should not be broken and re-issued in retail in small quantities,” Yadav said. Further, Hafed has asked each district manager to visit at least 10 schools in a month and submit a report on the suitability of infrastructure for proper and safe storage. “We have asked them to intimate us as also the District Education Officer of non-availability of proper storage or utensils,” he added. Besides, Hafed has asked the field staff to deliver the foodgrains immediately after release of stocks by the FCI and any delay should be reported to the officers concerned. |
Separate SGPC
Ambala, July 30 President of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (ad hoc) Didar Singh Nalvi in a statement said the Sikhs here had voted twice in favour of the Congress, which saw the party forming government in the state. He said they had supported the party as the leaders had promised in their election manifestos that a legislation favouring formation of a separate gurdwara committee to run the affairs of Sikh shrines in the state would be passed after coming to power. However, this promise was never realised. Nalvi said Chatha’s statement stated that the state government now had no intentions of granting the Sikhs of the state their "legitimate" right to mange their own shrines. He said the state Sikhs, who held considerable number of votes in various segments of the state, had now decided to vote against the Congress in the forthcoming LS elections. “The stance adopted by Chatha, who himself had gone all out to favour the demand of the Sikhs in the state Assembly, now suggests that he has backtracked from his promises and has betrayed the Sikhs whom he represented in the Assembly,” Nalvi said.

Boxer alleges gender bias in promotions
Bhiwani, July 30 Kavita (27), hailing from Nimadi village in the district, has been trained by coach Jagdish Singh. Daughter of retired Armyman Bhoop Singh, who was a national-level pugilist, she contested in 81 kg (light heavyweight). Kavita is a head constable in the state police as she was recruited in 2011 as a general category candidate. She alleged that while male counterparts had been appointed at senior positions, she was not given the benefit of the sports policy in recruitment. While talking to The Tribune before leaving for Northern Ireland to take part in the World Police Games on Monday, Kavita said she was considering to shift to another state as she was feeling ignored in her own state. "I have got an offer from Uttar Pradesh to join as an Inspector. The Railways is also keen to take me at a senior position. I am still waiting for an appropriate opportunity and could move to some other place as step-motherly treatment hurts me," she said. Kavita had won a bronze medal in the 7th World Boxing Championship in China in 2012. She also won a bronze in the Asian Women Boxing Championship in Mangolia last year. She had a total of nine medals in the international arena, including two in the World Boxing Championship and Asian Boxing Championship, each. Besides, she had bagged seven national boxing championships and national games gold medals, five federation cup gold medals and three gold medals in super cup inter-zonal national championship. She had also qualified to participate in the London Olympics after getting a bronze in the world championship, but missed the stage, as light heavyweight was not included in the games. She said as per the Central government's categorisation of international championship, the world championship events were clubbed with senior Asian and Commonwealth Games. "Many sportspersons, including Asian and Commonwealth medallists, were appointed as DSPs, Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors. I have made several representations to the state government, but got no assurance for promotion commensurate to my achievements," she said. Jagdish Singh, her coach at the Bhiwani Boxing Club, also echoed similar sentiments. |
